Besides what was said here, Jin Roh was great: a very adult tale in a very well built and believable world.

Sadly it becomes mudled by the tipical strongman political strife from the 80s/90s Japanese drama. But the way military service and trauma is represented is outstanding.

Perfect Blue is also perfect, and blue.

Wolf Children will wreck you, though I guess it isn't really dark but very recommendable.

Also Berserk but only the first season (golden era).

Psycho Pass is good though it’s not SUPER dark. Very dystopian though. Good show.

Serial Experiments Lain.

I was rewatching a couple of episodes and I had forgotten how eerie and creepy this one was.

Madoka.

Even after all these years and rewatches, it can still draw me in. And Magia still sends chills up my spine.

Since nobody mentioned it yet: The Promised Neverland

It started with a very strong hook, had a middle section full of suspense, and ended the best way I could hope for.

Wierd pick, but Dorohedoro.

The world and main plot are undeniably dark. But at the same time side threads and charachters have a juxtaposed wholesome and positive outlook, and tonally things work like a slice of life a lot of the time.

It's great.

On the one hand, it's incredibly well-made. On the other hand I'm not sure I ever want to watch that ever again.

That's how I feel about Grave of the Fireflies. I've only seen the first episode or two of Tokopi, but my spouse and I knew we had to put it down at the time. Maybe someday.

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth - half of the episodes are so fucking dark that you literally can't see shit

Area 88 was a gut-punch I wasn't expecting. So bleak.

The original even more than the reboot

Mirai Nikki Elfen Lied Psycho pass

Top three because I couldn't pick a favourite from them if I tried.

[–] Manalith@midwest.social 8 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Mirai Nikki, Elfen Lied, Psycho pass. In case anyone needed commas.

[–] bishoponarope@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Those were supposed to be on new lines. Will teach me not to supervise my own comments.

[–] Manalith@midwest.social 1 points 2 hours ago

I've found in all the mobile apps I've used, ya gotta double enter to get new lines to actually show up. Maybe I'm also doing something wrong, but that's what works for me on Eternity anyway.
