Correctly if I'm wrong, but I don't think a "slamming" from Keir Starmer has any influence outside the UK.

Not that he's wrong - it is to be expected that the broken clock of British politics is actually right once in a while.

Not like anyone is forced to go. If you have any sense left, boycott this bullshit, the price should make that easier

When politicians support the masses you know they are desperate and on the edge.

[–] Fleur_@aussie.zone 3 points 3 hours ago

Everybody capitalists until market pricing fucks them

[–] Leviathan@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

Could it be this guy was poised to make bank on the world cup but people don't want to give their money to Nazis and now he's trying to put butts in seats by pretending to care about ticket prices?

[–] magnue@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago

I feel like him or his mate (error file not found) tried to buy one and got offended.

[–] Insekticus@aussie.zone 12 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Well, at least he's focusing on the important things, like football ticket prices. Who needs to worry about the climate catastrophe, ecosystem collapse, plummeting global mental health, pollution, or any of that other nonsense. So long as the football tickets aren't too cheap or too expensive...

[–] Leviathan@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

People don't tend to fight as hard for the former if they have access to the latter. It's all just making sure bread and circuses keep the populace distracted.

[–] jobbies@lemmy.zip 28 points 20 hours ago

How about he gets raging about things people are actually worried about? Like the cost of energy or housing or genocide in Palestine or climate change???

I mean, yeah, FIFA are taking the piss but its not exactly top of the agenda.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 22 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

How about you just don't go?

Literally do not come here unless you're looking for a fight because that's all you'll get if you come to the US right now.

I'm honestly just trying to keep people safe.

Linking this to the points made by others, it's "interesting" that he chooses to "slam" the kind of problem that individuals can easily avoid (since going there is entirely a choice) and which is outside his remit, but not at all the kind of problems which people cannot avoid and ARE in his remit, like the working poor in Britain or a foreign state murdering children with weapons he sends them.

One might even think he's being a little, tiny, minuscule bit hypocrite in waving his left hand whilst shouting "look there" at the same time as his right hand repeatedly sticks knives in people's backs.

In his defense, doing that is such a standard of British politics that nowadays there's little else to it than that this kind of scam.

I feel like you dont understand football fans. If Qatar and all the deplorable things that go on there didn't stop them I doubt fascists will.

[–] itisileclerk@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Qatar are amateurs comparing to USA in everything, including violating human rights, committed genocide, killed civilians. Football fans care about their team and nothing more, they trully don't mix sport and politic.

I'll give you genocide but I'd encourage you to read up about the kafala system, treatment of women and lgbt folks etc. If anything US is taking tips from Qatar.

Football fans care about their team and nothing more, they trully don't mix sport and politic.

I'm guessing you've never heard of the old firm then?

If you're lucky you can watch the match in the detention centra

[–] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 3 points 6 hours ago

They don't even have trained medical staff nor enough food at those concentration camps, what makes you think they have a telly? There's been reports those self proclaimed christians even deny bibles to the detained.

..while allowing private companies to tax people for basic ~~necessities~~ rights like water, when there are places where the companies can’t even supply the water they tax us for - clown

[–] Rat_in_a_hat@lemmy.ca 21 points 21 hours ago

Is Starmer trying to win easy brownie points while he's managing everything else horribly? It's not like he can do anything about ticket prices for things on the other side of the world either.

[–] sbbq@lemmy.zip 17 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

These tickets are hyper luxury products. It's not like they're charging out the ass for diapers and formula. If the tickets sell, they weren't too expensive.

[–] limonfiesta@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Professional sports suck up taxpayer funds like there's no tomorrow.

Ticket price controls should be put in place across the world for any sports league, or team, that receives any public funding, including tax breaks, but of course that's not a policy this turd would advocate for.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

Don't worry, many of that overpriced tickets won't find buyers...

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 1 points 20 hours ago

It's not even in his own country.

https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/48707727/fifa-triples-best-available-world-cup-final-ticket-33k

FIFA tripled the price of its best available tickets to the FIFA World Cup final, making $32,970 seats available Thursday for the July 19 match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Soccer's governing body listed those seats as front category 1 on its sales site on a day that saw members of Congress question the pricing structure for World Cup tickets and ask FIFA for more transparency on asking prices.

FIFA previously had a high price of $10,990 for category 1 at the final. However, that ticket was now available Thursday night only as wheelchair and easy access amenity category 1.

Tickets for the July 14 semifinal at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, were listed at $11,130, $4,330, $3,710 and $2,705. Seats for the following day's semifinal at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium were at $10,635, $3,545 and $2,725.

More expensive than for NFL tickets!

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/super-bowl/2026/01/21/super-bowl-60-ticket-prices-purchase-cheapest/88274794007/

Face value for tickets to Super Bowl 60 range from $950 to $8,500, according to Friedman, who provided USA TODAY Sports a screenshot of a seating chart with ticket prices.

Sounds a bit like old man is waving his fist and shouting at the clouds.
