https://www.pcgamer.com/police-kill-kansas-man-while-responding-to-an-alleged-swatting/

28-year-old Andrew Finch of Wichita, Kansas, was killed last night by police in what appears to have been an incident of "swatting." Deputy police chief Troy Livingston told the Wichita Eagle that police were responding to a report of a murder and hostage situation at Finch's home when he came to the front door and was shot.

USA... when showing up at your door can make you killed by the police....

"This stupid bastard is accused of killing people and taking hostages, and then he just answers the door unarmed and confused? Take him down, boys!"

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 17 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Imagine if the hostage was escaping and they just shot them.

Frankly it's everyone's fault for even living in the United States.

Pay me the money to gtfo of here and let me stay with you for 2 months while I collect income for a job so I can get my own place, then.

Yea, how stupid of people to incorrectly choose where to be born.

Reminds me of South Park: "It's comin' right for us!"

[–] johnyreeferseed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There's another old South Park where the adults are wasted at a meteor watching party. The cops show up because they think it's a suicide cult and start shooting people leaving the party.

That one was inspired by WACO. Things never change...

Land of the degenerates.

Mayyyyybe the problem is that there even is swatting. As in, why is there such a violent institution. Have you guys over there considered that?

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I truly wonder if they realise that in otger counties, you are not one phone call away from being swatted by the gestapo for no reason. The price of freedom i guess.

How many have died from swatting outside of the US? None of the linked examples seems to involve armed police just running wild shooting anything that moves as in those US examples.

[–] Verdorrterpunkt@feddit.org 18 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I read a few of those an people didn:t seem to have been killed, am i misunderstanding something? Maybe i was using swatting the wrong way, i kind of connected it to where violence was used as a result of a blind report.

[–] Wrufieotnak@feddit.org 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I understood it as swatting in general if somebody made a false accusation and the police raided somebody. Doesnt need to be physical harm involved.

Police knocks on the door and ask if everything is alright? -> not (successful) swatting

Police breaks down your door and stands in your living room but then leaves after realising you are not a bloodthirsty kidnapper -> swatting

Police kills an innocent due to swatting -> swatting in USA

[–] Verdorrterpunkt@feddit.org 6 points 3 weeks ago

Fair enough, i think contextually my argument should be clear though.

One of the problems is related to no knock warrants. Depending on what neighborhood you live in, unless that person says they are the police and look like the police, they are considered a home invader and are going to get themselves killed. Considering that American police have better equipment that poor country's military's and they will shoot anything they consider a threat. Innocent people are going to be murdered by police.

[–] Baggie@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago

You may want to reread that one for Australia, it's literally someone trying to swat people in America.

I'm generally not one for over-punishing, but I feel like swatting should be heavily punished, like ten years on a roadside chain-gang punished. These little shits should have to give away a chunk of their freedom for trying to kill someone in this way.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 17 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

They should get the same punishment as someone would for attempted murder. Because essentially that's what they're doing.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Fair point.

[–] SoloCritical@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

10 years for attempted premeditated murder? Let’s rethink those numbers?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

in one, posted in December 2025, police enter the room and tell him, "You're getting swatted again."

Here's an idea, how about fucking don't then

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago

/sigh it’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation.

The first time, a heavy response makes sense on their part. They’ve been told an extreme situation is going on. After that, it makes sense to be chill about it, but you can’t just ignore the claim. At the very least you have to check things out.

Imagine the backlash if a streamer legitimately did kidnap someone and they got loose and called the cops, but the cops were like “lol another swatting incident let’s ignore it.”

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Is this the guy that swatted the granny?

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world -3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

So he exposed innocent people to SWAT teams, and also ratted out his buddies. What a sterling example of humanity. Enjoy those prison showers.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Haha rape is so funny 😂 hahaha

Tough to weigh one type of self righteousness against another.
