"How is this racist."
-white proverb

[–] KurtVonnegut@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Using this comment to promote this excellent documentary. It's a slow-build, but it does a fantastic job of exposing anti-black racism in the modern south / how "nostalgic" memories of the Confederacy are still used to promote racism. It starts out slow, with the whites saying "How is this racist?" and ends with the mask of civility completely slipping off in the final 10 minutes, it's terrifying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHAauml9rV4

It's just an SS reference! Political correctness gone mad!

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 45 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

It's not a slavic rune! It's only slavid insofar as the Rus were Scandinavian in origin! It's a "reconstructed" version of a rune from the younger futhark. But this isnt even tbat. This is a fucking doppelsig, the most nazi synbol you could make next to a hakenkreuz

Aaaaaaaaaaa

[–] mathemachristian@hexbear.net 28 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

pronouns they meant the futhark version but the some fonts are display is as the sig rune /s

apparently that's the excuse they gave but patriotic fact checkers confirmed that they didn't even use the unicode symbol for the futhark sowilo rune ᛋ but the a smallcaps koppa ϟ.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 34 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

THATS NOT EVEN AN EXCUSE IN LA LA LAND.

IT'S STILL NOT SLAVIC, IT'S STILL NOT OKAY TO DO A DOPPELRUNE, THIS IS STILL THE SS SYMBOL

AAAAAAA

[–] Civility@hexbear.net 21 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Reading the thread, the GOG staff acknowledged that a German coworker had advised against them sending this out, so they removed the emojis from the German language version of the email. They still sent the SS runes out to people in Germany subscribed in English, which is very illegal in a marketing communication about a fantasy video game, and it's a law that's enforced fairly rigorously.

Hopefully there will be criminal prosecution.

[–] ghosts@hexbear.net 37 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Any publicity is good publicity, I guess.

Game looks quite good. No evidence of any Nazi related stuff in the gameplay, Steam forums etc. That seems entirely to be GOG’s doing

Might buy it at on Steam at 45% off as part of their “women-led games” sale.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 33 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

No that person is actually correct the devs are cool and had a way better response. They even changed so.e stuff in the game before all this happened because some of those symbols have been taken up by Nazis. This is squarely on GoG for the whole black sun and SS bolts.

[–] ghosts@hexbear.net 25 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's just wild to be like, "Wow a Nazi dogwhistle! I know what I'm buying today!"

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 27 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Sure yeah I just read the original apology from the devs and it feels bad seeing them catching strays over this. This was all on GoG

Yup, it’s that classic fake outrage bullshit that permeates the cringiest corners of social media. They need to indulge in these performative contests to signal “superior” virtue over logical moderates who cooly observe that symbols on a screen are not intrinsically hateful & are objectively incapable of harm. People acting & realizing shitty ideologies are capable of harm. Stopping them is the furthest thing from denouncing a symbol.

They’re “fighting fascism” they claim. Are they, though? If objecting over symbols “stopped fascists”, no one’s ever seen it.

They’re claiming these symbols send messages of hate. What’s the “message of hate” here? These sun-related symbols (fitting the game’s sun & rune theme) are vague.

They’re stroking their justice boners over some unearned sense of accomplishment that they “fought the good fight”. Denouncing symbols is the least meaningful opposition or rational discourse: it doesn’t challenge shitty ideas or their adherents. It does absolutely nothing.

Irrational losers, however, don’t like critical thought. Discrediting their bullshit sense of superiority & accomplishment (at doing nothing meaningful despite feeling like they are) offends them.

"Logical moderate" is an oxymoron. I need to resist the urge to fedpost.

[–] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 24 points 3 weeks ago

it's over, i have already depicted you as the performative virtue signaler and myself as the cooly observing logical moderate

[–] FortifiedAttack@hexbear.net 35 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The Ukrainization of GOG is complete.

[–] goferking0 20 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

look how dare you quote Ukraine giving a nazi from WW2 state honors and a state funeral that's just Russian propaganda

I know that would happen but people calling what happened last week propaganda is wild

Edit, oh that's the only comment removed from that entire thread. Interesting

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 32 points 3 weeks ago

Never trust a rune guy

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 29 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

Why is it all the most Nazi looking runes that aren't even from the same alphabet?

People that are into paganism for none Nazi reasons (if that's possible) should be really weary of that.

Like, spell out a word or something, if you want to come across as genuinely interested in that culture.

Of course none of that matters because neopaganism is all Naziism.

[–] simpletailor@hexbear.net 22 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

I would argue rather that the aesthetics of paganism have been coopted by Nazis--especially the Nordic avenues (less so the Celtic).

Paganism, and Wicca in particular, attracts also countercultural types who seek a greater connection to the Earth than their capitalist alienation provides. These are the folks who might grow a small garden or herb planter at home, who take a moment of reflection on a solstice, or who choose veganism for animal welfare/ecological reasons.

Yes, there is a "crunchy to fascist pipeline". Yes, Nordic runes in particular have been a dog whistle for fascists for decades. But there are also misfits, outcasts, and Renaissance Faire nerds who are otherwise agnostic/atheist and find spirituality in communion with nature, and so call themselves pagans or Wiccans.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, I get the appeal. I was just still kinda mad at all the Nazis.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I guess MCU is pretty Pagan as well.

[–] goferking0 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago

Not sure how it could be more pagan. The modern heroes are basically part of a pantheon as well.

[–] CupcakeOfSpice@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago

I was pagan for a short while. Started out looking to witchcraft to gain a semblance of control over my life and stayed for the connection to nature. I tried to keep parts of each of those, but I don't find myself leaving sacrifices to nature gods anymore. And not, like, full-on witchcraft anymore, but the mindfulness, meditation, and appreciation for life in all its manifestations. Sometimes when psychosis kicks in, I fall back into magic, but then it's more often hermeticism and ritual magic.

ᛋᚬᛚᛅᚱ ᛁᚾᛏᛁᚱ

ᚦᛁᛋᛅ ᛘᛅᚦᚱ ᛁᚱ ᚴᚱᚢᚾᛅᚦᚱ ᚢᛘ ᛅᛏ ᚢᛁᚱᛅ ᚴᛅᛏᛅᚱ.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

My old norse is real, real rusty, and I haven't read runes since primary school but uhh. Is this just transliterating the word "Solar" and then the word endir (Which iirc means "End")? What's the joke, I don't get it. :(

[–] edie@lemmy.encryptionin.space 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yup. Sólar, sól in indefinite genitive. Suns end. An attempt at translating the name of the game. There isn't really any joke here. I didn't come up with any joke so I just did the name of the game instead.

Although, I'm not sure if ᛁᚾᛏᛁ ᛋᚬᛚᛅᚱᛁᚾᛅᚱ (endi sólarinnar) might have been more correct. The different grammatical cases are not my strong suite.

That's right there's a game involved. I was wondering if it was some sort of joke about butts. My brain is fried, it is no good.

[–] edie@lemmy.encryptionin.space 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

What is your runic?

I tried to write "Pig poop balls" but I absolutely fucked it up, because while I knew the word for "Pig" that was the only word I knew, and I'm still pretty sure I wrote it wrong

[–] Crucible@hexbear.net 28 points 3 weeks ago

Interesting how many of them are into this 'culture' but when a Black or Asian person wants to make a game about their culture it's white genocide

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 27 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I will say, as a guy who find Slavic and Norse mythology cool it does suck how much of that shit had gotten co-opted by Nazis.

I once thought about getting a tattoo inspired by one of my favorite games, Valheim, but was worried people would think it was Nazi shit.

[–] Athena5898@hexbear.net 24 points 3 weeks ago

God, I love various mythos and folklore. Every time I come across something Norse I always have to do a background check. It's exhausting.

[–] anotherspinelessdem@lemmy.ml 27 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

You would think/hope that a Polish game studio would know better. Like, the country that suffered most at the hands of the Nazis, predominantly housing many of the groups that suffered most at their hands.

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 29 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You would think/hope that a Polish game studio would know better

Based on my prior experiences with Poles, no I would not

[–] Super_Lumalo@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago

Depends which ones and where, but yes many hold outright hitlerian views. I have'nt had any interaction with polish diaspora, however I expect them to be extreme gusanos

[–] Super_Lumalo@hexbear.net 23 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

If Germany didn't invade Poland first, we would be as hitlerian as the baltics.

[–] anotherspinelessdem@lemmy.ml 16 points 3 weeks ago

That's sad, but based on my own experiences I'm not completely surprised.

[–] Salah@hexbear.net 20 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Unfortunately there’s many neonazis in Poland and some of them seem to work for this game studio

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 19 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

No it's GoG that did this shit not the studio

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 21 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Gamers will see a black sun and call it ancient Nordic culture.

[–] goferking0 16 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Just like how people will see a deaths head and just think pirate...

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

He just liked skulls okay? And murdering brown people overseas. Don't read too much into it. You people will criticize anything!

[–] goferking0 10 points 2 weeks ago

why would anyone know it was a nazi skull unless was a history buff!.... And ignore that platner called himself one it couldn't be a nazi skull cause the military totally would have made them remove it

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

A lot of people dont know what a deaths head is. This is true. I think Platner does, as well as most people displaying one on themselves unless I can be convinced otherwise. There is a lot of stuff with skulls in it and most people arent looking it up. Platter knows for sure.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago

Well that PR non-apology has just made me permanently delete my gog account, they can go fuck themselves.

[–] goferking0 16 points 3 weeks ago

For those that don't want to click on the link or look more into what gog did, these are the images in question (less a member of Germany then they realized it could be bad to send out)

Note, due to the imagery I'm not going to try and add alt text

[–] Aradino@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago

Wow even reddit(or at least the thread I saw) aren't buying that shit and are mad at GOG for this

Lemmitors are really scubaing at the bottom of the barrel huh

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

inb4 someone compares these symbols to the hammer and sickle
