the fact they built it in a low income neighborhood and spent 850m on it is just so fucking American.

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 10 points 5 days ago

Don't ask, but it won't be a low income neighborhood for long. papyrus-side-eye

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 3 points 5 days ago

They stole their public park to build it too. It's so fucked.

University of Chicago was the birthplace of neo liberalism, the Obamalisk is it's tombstone.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 12 points 5 days ago

Tagline please

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Fuck it, let's go see the Obamalisk

Kid you not, you can park in the Nancy Pelosi Parking Lot.

It's actually called the Barack Obama Presidential Center because his Presidential Library is digital. (The physical copies of his documents will be preserved in a National Archives and Records Administration facility elsewhere.)

[–] huf@hexbear.net 27 points 5 days ago (2 children)

So it has no use at all, just a monument to his ego?

[–] Sted@hexbear.net 16 points 5 days ago

Just like his presidency so it's at least fitting.

Obama.org says it is a place "where people from around the world come to get inspired and bring change home"

You can read more about it here: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2026/jun/02/klingon-prison-barack-obamas-presidential-library-chicago

oh thanks, i skimmed a bit of that article and now i'm in terrible pain.

If there ever was a testiment to obama-drone presidency, i suppose a massive wasteful brutalist building would be fitting.

The hubris needed to have a .org website of your last name.

Edit: bush.org is available. Somebody get it so we can have it redirect to here or make a forum dedicated to different trim styles for your pubes

I get that its supposed to be quoting something, but that building is hard to read. It looks like a word scramble

The obamalisk contains a library full of all of the books Barack and Michelle have had written for them, as well as a few of those of their advisors. You cannot check out the books though, only read them in the "library".

That part in itself is such a massive insight into Obama and a wonderful microcosm of the world he sought to create.

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 11 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

It's "look on my works* ye Mighty, and despair" not "check out my works and take them home"

*The gentrification is part of the works

It doesnt. Those are in the separate nearby public library.

Uh let me read here

The obungleisk

[–] elpaso@hexbear.net 22 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Listening to the Chapo pod about this. They got a great guest speaker.

[–] makotech222@hexbear.net 10 points 5 days ago

kate wagner is great in it and in general

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 8 points 5 days ago

They privatized a public park for this.

Most progressive president of the 21st century!

They wanted it to look like a drone factory and command center to secure his true legacy. obama-drone

Also gives Dark Tower vibes

[–] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I just finished that series

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Oh nice! It's one of my all time favorites. Still hoping it someday gets a proper adaptation. I think an animated series would be the best way to go given it's packed full of so much wild high strangeness and shit that would be incredibly difficult to film.

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 12 points 5 days ago

the lava is an inspired choice, very nice

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 10 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

The actual building manages to look even more sinister. What the fuck was he thinking?

[–] SmokinStalin@hexbear.net 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

If the risks of lava could be mitigated would an active volcano be a decent olace to store books? Low humidity, no insects, etc...

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Loads of particulates in the air though. And sulfur is used in the production of paper but I dont know if that means its good for books. (Sulfuric acid is definitely bad for books though)

Should have just gone with the family guy gag design

[–] mactan@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 days ago

and of course presidential libraries entire existence is owed to the forever-tax-breaks they get to do as a shady tax haven for "philanthropic donations"

[–] Deadend@hexbear.net 3 points 5 days ago

It looks like a giant Cybertruck pointed skyward when seen from the correct angle.
