Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Who needs conspiracy theorists?

Why seek for the evil group of people plotting to take over the world in secret when you have the evil group of people plotting to take over the world out in the open?

A directory in the website's code was first revealed by the Swiss hacktivist maia arson crimew. Known for exposing the US government’s No Fly List and breaching the surveillance-camera company Verkada, crimew tells WIRED the directory surfaced via an anonymous tip.

waow-based

[–] Dessa@hexbear.net 14 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

BTW, apparently all of that seems to have just been freely accessible:

The directory was embedded in the code of dialog.org, a near-empty page, and was served to any visitor who viewed the page's source. A separate Dialog page, at app.dialog.org, presents a sign-in screen for “Dialog Global 2026,” outside Dublin. The page invites any visitor to sign in by email or Google account and presents no terms of service, no notice that the application is restricted to members, and no indication that an invitation is required.

The literal only reason this publicly available information was not yet public knowledge seems to have been that nobody looked dialog up before. Which ... may have happened now because the group's 2014 meeting made it into the Epstein files. Of fucking course they also are in the Epstein files.

Cory Booker is a funny (but not surprising) one

How to manufacture defense spending, bullshit the people we're exploiting, rig markets to capitalize on the manufactured bullshit, and avoid paying taxes on the grifted gains.

anybody find a link to DL the data? looks like something that everybody should have a copy of

[–] imogen_underscore@hexbear.net 18 points 15 hours ago (5 children)

it's not really as much of a "trove" as the articles makes out (though they also apparently have the full attendee list from another unnamed source which we probably won't be getting our hands on), they literally just left some member data exposed in the html of the website. from maia on bsky:

LOL at so many of these names, but especially Larry Summers and Bret Stephens. And Garry Kasparov and Grover Norquist and Cory Booker and Sam Harris and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

[–] RussianEngineer@hexbear.net 7 points 13 hours ago

how much you wanna bet they llm generated the website and thats why its security is nonexistant

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 9 points 15 hours ago

Be gay do crime gayroller-2000

[–] Kumikommunism@hexbear.net 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

which we probably won't be getting our hands on

Why do you say that? Also, what's the point of publicizing any of this without releasing the full list?

[–] imogen_underscore@hexbear.net 3 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

i mean just cause some source apparently leaked it to wired and they didn't publish it in full. maybe it will become available through some other leak but who knows. i guess their info sec is obviously shit so there's a fair chance

what's the point

to get clicks while not being too cool i guess. it's a pro-evil editorial decision. idk much about wired dot com but principled anti imperialist outlet they clearly aren't

[–] FloridaBoi@hexbear.net 11 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

It was as simple at clicking inspect on the site to get the data it seems

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 8 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Wasn't this how that CIA-run Star Wars fansite got exposed?

[–] FloridaBoi@hexbear.net 6 points 13 hours ago

I thought that was the one where they were all registered by the same person or company located in Virginia
