This ad just popped up and it should be more infuriating than just mildly, But it's more of Google being Google. How many different tiers of YouTube are there now so Alphabet can skim off slightly higher margins from each user possible? Premium LITE? Really? And I am just tickled by the fact that the main perk is not that it removes ads but that there will be slightly less of them. "Pay us to watch ads" Is the new corporate standard.

I prefer "unpaid YouTube with adblockers".

There was a rule back in the 90s that the more words were used in the title of the software the worse it was. Adobe Photoshop was good. Corel DrawMaker 3.5 for Windows 98 Special Edition was crap.

That's actually a running joke with my friends. We always add "2000 professional plus - gold edition" if we want to mock something

2000 professional plus - gold edition

That's so old-fashioned. Premium Plus Platinum is modern!

[–] sigezayaq@startrek.website 12 points 2 days ago

they are trying so hard for people to pay for AI that they have to include unrelated stuff in the package lmao

[–] osanna@lemmy.vg 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

lmao. I haven't seen a youtube ad in years, and I use it almost all day, and yet, I don't pay anything for it.

Until Google locks Android down.

I have found I use less of things they make inaccessible. They took reddit away and I have been fine, for once people are talking to me and I havent already read the top comments on the topic. Their move to block old.reddit.com will probably get rid of the last bits I use it for, the odd movie review thread or search for a wank.

[–] osanna@lemmy.vg 7 points 2 days ago

that's the neat part, they already are!

Corporate American sounds like an abusive ex

Yeah, the government won't let us have our own property though so not really an ex

VacuumTube for anyone using a linux HTPC and wants a TV interface

I use it everyday and it works great 99% of the time and usually YouTube itself is to blame and the App gets an update a couple days later that fixes everything

[–] toiletobserver@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Also new pipe, pipe pipe, and the many other similar apps doing good work

[–] Chais@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 days ago

Wow, I could get that thing I don't care for by paying for that other thing I don't care for. What a great deal.

[–] eezeebee@lemmy.ca 29 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I prefer YouTube Premium Plus Silver tier. It still has ads, but they are premium ads, which I find go down my throat more smoothly. Anything less makes me gag.

[–] StumblingWasabi@lemmy.today 2 points 12 hours ago

The premium ads are selected based off of your habits to ensure their products that you'll love. (In small text) if you go more than a week without purchasing one of these products there will be an additional charge

[–] darkmarx@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (2 children)

"Pay us and watch ads" has been around a long time. That's what cable tv was. We've gone full circle.

One day, something new will come along and kill streaming in the same way streaming did cable. Once things get this fragmented, something else always comes along to replace it, and the cycle will repeat.

It will be cheap, easy to use, and everyone will switch. Once enough people move over, the big corporations will get involved and the enshitification will begin. It will be adveetised to death, segmented, and people will look for an alternative.

[–] Mannivu@feddit.it 7 points 2 days ago

And this is why piracy will never cease to exist.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

i'm very curious how you imagine streaming being killed, are people gonna go back to laserdisc?..

Oh, that's so weird. How do I enable this in SmartTube?

Googz?

HOW DO I WATCH YOUR ADS IN SMART TUBE?

Do I need to use yt-dlp with TubeArchivist?

IS THAT WHAT WE SHOULD DO GOOGLE?

https://www.tubearchivist.com/

Oh, and while I'm here -

[–] SalmonTractor@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 2 days ago

My favorite edition is yt-dlp.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 16 points 2 days ago (2 children)

How the hell is it “premium” and “Lite”?

It can only be one.

Luxury Sport Utility Vehicle

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Less filling, tastes great.

[–] AmbitiousProcess@piefed.social 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

the main perk is not that it removes ads but that there will be slightly less of them.

It does remove ads in most videos, just not in Shorts, or on music videos. The whole deal is they're essentially un-bundling a music subscription from YT Premium, which makes it cheaper, and is then better if you, say, watch YouTube, but already use Spotify for your music.

Essentially, you don't see any ads when you watch videos, AKA no midrolls, but you might see a small banner ad above the list of next suggested videos to the right of the video player, and if you constantly scroll shorts they might toss some ads in there as well.

Personally, as someone who doesn't use YouTube for music, and doesn't like scrolling shorts, I see this as perfectly reasonable as a way to reduce the cost, especially when you can click the Theater mode button on any video to block out the majority of the suggested videos area by default before any sidebar ad would even make it on your screen.

[–] huppakee@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Great news then, if you get the AI Pro plan they include it free of charge!

"With fewer ads". Long gone are the good deals of the past, all we get know is shit

There is also Morphe, which is fine for me.

The tier makes sense, if not the name. Google insists on including music streaming in Youtube Premium, and Premium Lite is a cheaper tier that doesn't include music streaming. It's missing some other features too, but it beats Premium for people who just want to not have ads and for some reason won't use an ad blocker.

This support page about Premium Lite says it has no ads on "most non-music content, excluding Shorts. Ads may appear when you search or browse". Still having ads on music content makes sense given that Premium Lite doesn't include music streaming.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

and Premium Lite is a cheaper tier that doesn't include music streaming.

But... Youtube is a bunch of audio-only, video-only and -with-audio streams either way. So it's just an app thing?

[–] ryper@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

Premium includes Google's equivalent of paid Spotify. Premium Lite and free users get something closer to Spotify's free tier.

How many different tiers of YouTube are there now so Alphabet can skim off slightly higher margins from each user possible?

I'd rather have more tiers.

I'd pay for a tier where they had a no-log, no-datamining policy, which they don't currently offer. I'm not demanding that they change their existing tiers. I'm sure that there are plenty of people who are not interested in paying for that and don't care if Google is plonking everything they do into a database. But that's what I'd like, so I'd like to have a different tier.

I like YouTube. It has a lot of content that I like watching that I get a lot of value out of. But I don't like having someone trying every way possible to profile me. Right now, I can't get the first without the second.

I want to just pay up front, not pay via selling my personal data or pay via selling my eyeball time. Same way I pay for most products out there.

[–] huppakee@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Right now, I can't get the first without the second.

Not legally, no.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

It's that circles thing all over again. Everyone get in the circles and put stuff in other circles here's a firefly reference. YouTube, no it's part of circle now, put all this stuff in circles and put your name on the YouTube comments so people can put you in circles. Put them in circles too. Little Google is going to take on Facebook put Facebook in circles too.

[–] HoneyMustardGas@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I'd rather pay more for no ads than pay less for a few select ads. This is ridiculous. Just like Netflix's cheaper ad tier. SMH.
