I like running My own got dang social media site and being able to tell friends "That facebook shit just wants to take your data and make you vote for Trump. You should use My website instead."

wow, why is your comment green?
using lemmy on android summit

They are probably a mod. Most clients show mods in green and admins in red.
That's the weird thing, I'm not a mod on this community. I'm an admin on MULTIVERSE, but I have no power in this community.
No global karma system and therefore no karma farming.
I like that there are a variety of apps and services for different tastes and needs. On services, I like that Pixelfed and Loops exist to fill Instagram style niches for people even if it's not my cup of tea. Jerboa is a no-frills Lemmy app and that's how I want it, but I appreciate that there are many others with a plethora of features and styling choices that suit people, and are not forced to a single kind of experience.
The Piefed PWA customized with my own custom CSS. I stopped using apps for PieFed, the web app has all features and looks really nice with a little tweaking.
It's not built to exploit me.
Yes. Here, nobody is selling anything to me and I'm not getting sold.
As a kid I learnt P = I2R ; P = IE ; P = E2/R by careful selection of resistor values stuck across the 240V house supply and standing well back.
If I dont like something, I can pop in and make my own alternative or fix said thing on the platform with a PR. Ive donated code to a couple of federated projects. Small things that matter to me and in all cases the real people behind the code accepted the PRs. Thats nice.
Its not all or nothing. I can see mastodon posts on the threadiverse and back again. Its all about how YOU want to interact with everyone else! We have MUCH more options than the conventional social media with all the benefits thereof.
I also like that I can just pick up and leave. Ive done it a couple of times, not because something sucked, but because I liked something more.
I like that there's genuine conversations here, much like this one. Yes, there are cats and memes, but there's also the genuine connection.
I also like that it's open source. I'm big on open source, as I'm sure a lot of you are too :)
I like that there’s genuine conversations here, much like this one.
I completely agree with this, and especially with comment sections. In reddit, even before the bots took over, every discussion was overrun really quickly, with a huge mass of people. If you failed to take part, in like an hour after posting, it did not matter if you commented, as it was either buried, or nobody else would comment as the post tanked. So it was just pointless to even write comments.
Here, I can still jump into comment sections, and manage to have a conversation, even if the post was made days ago.
It's not overrun with bots like Reddit
How do you know?
I've seen more than enough bots here, and we know that only the tip of the iceberg is actually visible with things like this. Bots nowadays can pretend to be humans scarily well.
Yes so much of the advantage of the fediverse is that it’s a thoughtful person on the other end of a post and not just content engineered for the most engagement
It's the last of a dying breed.
Exactly. For me, it's quality vs quantity.
Peace of mind
I don't have to go through artificial slowness, walls of ads, cookie/"please sign-in" gateways. My data remains mine. The thing does what it does, it just works. Using commercial stuff is actively aggressive towards me and requires my constant vigilance to get through; the fediverse just works for me
It is a federation of multiple instances with one goal in mind: to liberate human interaction from gamification and algorithm manipulation that makes you addicted to the platform, allowing them to brainwash you with targeted ads.
As for Lemmy/Piefed, the goal is to liberate and free human speech without profiting from it or being manipulated by algorithms and features like Reddit's karma system.
the federation. that no one single entity dominates it much. I know a bunch of people are going to list the large instances but they can by and large all be read by smaller instances and the fact there are several is better than one corpo owner. oh an that is gpl of course.
Yeah, I think people often assume that "good" federation means even user distribution. But the power of federation is that you can leave if you want to and no one can weaponize your social graph.

I like the naked ladies.
Wait until you find out about the Barenaked Ladies :-D
Barenaked Ladies (BNL) is a Canadian rock band formed in 1988 in Scarborough. The band developed a following in Canada in the early 1990s with their cassette Barenaked Ladies (1991) and their debut album Gordon (1992). The band's popularity eventually spread to the United States following the release of versions of "Brian Wilson" and "The Old Apartment" from their 1996 live album, Rock Spectacle. In 1998, Barenaked Ladies released their fourth studio album, Stunt, which contains their highest-charting hit, "One Week", along with "It's All Been Done" and "Call and Answer".[2] Their fifth album, Maroon (and lead single "Pinch Me"), also charted well. The band is also known for creating and performing the theme song of the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Barenaked Ladies has continued to regularly tour and record new music, having released 14 primary studio albums of original material and three themed studio albums. Initially a duo of singer-guitarists Ed Robertson and Steven Page,[3] the band grew to a quintet by 1990, adding brothers Jim and Andy Creeggan on bass and keyboards/congas, respectively, and drummer Tyler Stewart. Andy Creeggan left the band in 1995, and was replaced by multi-instrumentalist Kevin Hearn. Page left in 2009, reducing the group to a quartet.
The band's style has evolved, and its music (originally acoustic) grew to encompass a mixture of pop, rock and folk.[4][5] Their live performances feature comedic banter and freestyle rapping between songs.[6] They have received a number of Juno Awards, and have been nominated for two Grammy Awards.[7] The group has sold over 15 million albums and singles, and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in March 2018.
Gordon slaps.
I looked and they’re actually men who are fully clothed.
I’m unimpressed.

Thank you for over sharing.
Sorry... oh geeze >.<
did I annoy you guys with my special interest again ToT
As long as you aren't wearing a plastic raincoat right now, we're good.
Should've been more clear, but I know we all like the concept of the fediverse, I more meant specific apps or services, like if you enjoy using the front end alexandrite (not sure if thats still a thing) or are glad Mastodon added quote posts
Lemmy and Jerboa are good enough for me.
I really liked using Apollo to browse Reddit back when it was good. Voyager fills that same void but with less noise than using Reddit at the end
None
user account management.
it actually takes over my thoughts a lot. user accounts shoild be their own service.
its a really really hard problem. to have something thats not centralized but protected against manipulation. i want to solve to so bad.
I think the W3C SocialWeb Working Group is working on Federated Identity right now to incorporate into ActivityPub.
there actually is a thing where every account is part of the system using tokens. I keep on meaning to do it more https://nostr-resources.com/#learn-more
The worst thing about nostr is that there is no fallback if your account private key is stolen.
That's kind of an insoulable problem though. If the private key isn't the single source of truth, then how do you define ownership?
Two private keys, one for recovery and one for daily use?
