The giant mound of rubble underneath it always struck me as incredibly sloppy behavior.

[–] LittleFellaNamedBoof@hexbear.net 61 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Right? They just left it there after carving. You couldn't clear the rocks out? ffs.

[–] Hexamerous@hexbear.net 59 points 2 weeks ago

It represent the mountain of skulls the country is build upon.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It was supposed to be full-body apparently. They kind of just gave up at some point?

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Once they started making money, they stopped spending money on upkeep and clearing the rubble.

It really does look pathetic when viewed from any angle other than the touristy one they always use in movies. Kind of an apt metaphor for the US in general I suppose.

[–] ggtdbz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 weeks ago

I actually never saw it from any other angle and I’m kind of relieved that it’s not as severe a defacing of nature.

If I remember correctly it’s a spiritually/culturally honored mountain so it really shouldn’t be there if anything, but hey. I thought they excavated and carved a much bigger area

[–] Bobson_Dugnutt@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

I went there as a kid and remember thinking that it was much smaller than I imagined from photos.

Could Sid Meyer be the only based gamer?

The Civ series has slowly had any social commentary filed off. You don't even get global warming anymore.

(They have gotten better at representing non-European people as having civilizations, though.)

[–] Hexamerous@hexbear.net 66 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yankees will build shit like this and cry about "personality cults" without a hint of irony.

[–] SockOlm@hexbear.net 43 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

for how much of a personality cult stalin supposedly had, they didn't carve him into any mountains curious-marx

[–] huf@hexbear.net 26 points 2 weeks ago

no, but they did name steel after him.

[–] AstroStelar@hexbear.net 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Changsha has a stone monument to Mao Zedong who was born nearby, but stone was mined elsewhere and then assembled here. Zhengzhou has an actual stone carving of two mythical emperors that traditionally represent the "founding fathers" of Chinese civilisation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yan_Huang_Zisun

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

Maybe it is just because it isn't as weathered, but that Mao statue looks way better than Mt. Rushmore.

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago

Especially later on, he certainly had a personality cult and, while it's not carved into a mountain, they did have big stone monuments to him:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalin_Monument_%28Prague%29

While I think the cult was a case of severe personal and strategic wrongheadedness on the part of Stalin and many others, I certainly would not equivocate between him or his admirers and those of especially the worse three heads on Rushmore.

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 53 points 2 weeks ago

It's originally wasn't even an actual US monument. Some businessman built it as a tourist trap, in fact the US government at the time thought it was tacky and stupid and didn't want anything to do with it.

[–] EveningCicada@hexbear.net 41 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Gotta respect the technical expertise needed to make this, though. I have no idea how they made all that mayo solidify.

[–] Hexamerous@hexbear.net 34 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Exactly, it doesn't make any sense. A primitive civilization that, to our knowledge, didn't even have "spice" technology to season their food. How could these primitive people build a technologically complex thing like this? What do we really know about these "founding fathers"...

"Who" really built them?!

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 18 points 2 weeks ago

I'm not claiming anything, I'm just noticing how the guy on the right line is looks like he's wearing a cosmonaut's helmet. How could primitive yanks know about space suits at the time?

[–] axont@hexbear.net 36 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The guy who carved this also carved leaders of the confederacy into a mountain in Georgia. The guy who paid him was an active Klan member.

[–] Goblinmancer@hexbear.net 18 points 2 weeks ago

It just keeps getting worse

[–] oliveoil@hexbear.net 28 points 2 weeks ago

Hey don't insult the hokage

[–] Dessa@hexbear.net 18 points 2 weeks ago

Its such a same, because the surroinding landscape is absolutely stunning

[–] LoOroBob@lemmy.wtf 12 points 2 weeks ago (8 children)

Wait until the orange guy has his face eternalized there …

[–] Sneakytrickyyy@hexbear.net 52 points 2 weeks ago

I genuinely wish he would add it, I want the sanctity of all of America's monuments to be destroyed, it's more poetic and fitting that way, God bless the reflecting pool.

[–] Scarry@hexbear.net 32 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Lol, name one reason Trump is in any way worse than any of those demons

[–] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 18 points 2 weeks ago

uh he's tacky and oafish

[–] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

his tie is too long

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

Lincoln was probably better than trump at least

The US getting what it deserves will never not be funny.

I hope he removes all their heads and puts his own there. Fuck all american presidents

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 15 points 2 weeks ago

Would still be less tacky than the obamalisk

[–] axont@hexbear.net 13 points 2 weeks ago

I have a feeling there's neither enough rock to do that nor any sort of contractor skilled enough to do it. Trump can't even hire someone for resurfacing a pool

[–] Ram_The_Manparts@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago

Shit would be hilarious

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago

I hope they do a botched half-finished job that is impossible to hide.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

In true Trump fashion, they're likely to try, but the whole thing will be so corrupt and incompetent that they'll end up just destroying the whole thing.

[–] Chulk@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 weeks ago

If you ever find yourself in the area, go see the Crazy Horse monument instead.

[–] wolfinthewoods@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago

Incredibly tacky is what springs to mind
