Early last week, I was at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library for its first weekend. At the library itself, despite President Donald Trump inserting himself incongruously into the opening ceremonies, I did not see a single person sporting a Trump-branded clothing item.

The town of Medora, North Dakota, itself was, however, a different story. It wasn’t overwhelming. But for someone who lives in an urban center of a blue state, where even in the ruby red rural areas most people have become sufficiently shamed to shut up about their MAGA tendencies, a single errant MAGA cap is a rarity.

It's too bad mass discontent has no influence on the actions of our government.

[–] Kurtismayfield@lemmy.zip 3 points 14 hours ago

To be fair, a non zero number of MAGA voters despise anything they are told to despise. So they are just getting back what they deliver on cue from the media they digest.

[–] spacegoat@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

Not just Trump supporters. Republicans, Christians, Lying Centrists.

If FOX or The Donald doesn't tell them they're despised, how would they ever know? They are not reading Jezebel.

[–] zbyte64@awful.systems 2 points 1 day ago

Well, there is their family members who either ignore them or make fun of them behind their backs.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They are clueless. Protesting we will get overwhelmingly massive honks and waves and thumbs up and other signs of approval and then once or twice amidst it you get the maga yelling loser or fuck you. Its like are they congniscant of how overwhelmingly in the minority they are. Does all the adulation happening in the midst of their vitriole make its way into their senses at all.

I wish someone named this effect. Maybe it is some variation the Overton Window overlaid with Dunning-Kreuger. But whatever it is it is pervasive. There are so many people I know that once you get them talking about it they absolutely are anti fascist, anti-Trump, anti-Republican. But they're not vocal. I think decent people are not vocal in general. They rightly feel that it is just common sense to work toward a society that has equity and treats people fairly and the idea that it takes work to maintain that is inconceivable. Like these fascist fuckers will figure it out if you give them enough time. Maybe that's just the way human civilization works... It has to get really bad for the majority of people before ordinary decent folks are forced into action. Maybe one more voting cycle will fix things, so just wait for the next election.

I agree, and I think that's why Project2025 is a thing, and why they're slow-walking the destruction of everything. They're avoiding to, as Admiral Yamamoto once said, "awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." I think our society still has this kind of backbone and character, but only under sudden and extreme conditions.

I don't see america surviving if there is not a monumental shift in the next election.

Their entire world is built around being the 'righteous asshole'.

In my town they would plaster their trucks with stickers, fly Trump and Confederate flags, then drive around blocking traffic and saying "Fuck You!" to the rest of the world. One good thing about Trump's $6 gas is it has them doing a lot less driving around lately.

Last year we hosted a holiday dinner and included a neighborhood couple we had never met. Within minutes it became apparent we had invited a Magat POS. He actually exceeded expectations, bringing up Trump time and again and ignoring the fact we kept changing the subject. It took one of us openly ridiculing Trump to get him to finally shut the fuck up. It was only because we didn't want to make other people there uncomfortable that he wasn't out the door on his ass.

His wife (not Maga) has since approached us asking to get together and we've politely declined. No need to tell her we'd rather have triple servings of Taco Bell lettuce during a root canal than to ever spend a minute in her husband's miserable presence again.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 111 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think you should tell her. Explicitly. Be very detailed about your feelings. Ignoring these things will not help.

Lmao taco bell lettuce. I do not support the women who support those men. Idc if they say they are different than him.

Out of 266 voters, three downvoted. I’m curious who that 1.13% were here on Lemmy. They’re clearly out of their comfort zone.

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 50 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wish every single one of them the day they deserve.

The life they deserve.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wish them a socialist mayor, congressman, senator, or president, because actually seeing the benefits of it for themselves is what's going to create lasting change, not conservatism or ~~centrism~~ compassionate conservatism.

I wouldn't expect them to.

The social media algorithms they're addicted to have effectively reconstructed their reality. If nothing else, they're a walking demonstration as to why punishing and regulating social media companies is a moral and global imperative.

[–] SpikesOtherDog@ani.social 33 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I watched my MIL turn around. The family is split on the topic, but the more the problems compound the less sure the MAGA supporters are becoming of their decisions.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

My parents would rather support this fascist piece of shit than have a relationship with their adult son. So that fucking sucks.

[–] greenfish@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

My in-laws too. I'm sorry 😞

[–] SpikesOtherDog@ani.social 8 points 1 day ago

It does. My wife realized that she has outgrown her family. She can't detach herself from her family, and I think that the aggressive way they hold on to each other fixes a lot of issues.

My own mother doesn't understand and has an excuse for everything. We were already distancing ourselves 10 years before MAGA, so it doesn't hurt so much. Watching her say that you MUST BE A GOOD CITIZEN AND LISTEN TO THE PRESIDENT after four years of watching her trash talk Biden is a trip. I didn't particularly care to stand between her and whatever she had to say then, but the hypocritical irony is right there.

[–] Fandangalo@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (6 children)

I wish mine would. I love her as a person, but she’s so headstrong about it. She’s hitched all these elements of her personality to it (faith, hobbies, community outside family, decorations). I feel like we’d need some sort of reverse Jan 6, like an event that’s so apparent & bad, not fakeable, but I cannot see anything sticking to Teflon right now.

Rubio & Miller’s recent comments suggest a deeper fracturing coming across America. It’s hard not to believe the worst is coming.

Not sure how much Americans are aware they are despised as a collective about electing this twice, doing fuckall about it, blaming everything and everyone else and now pushing it onto the rest of us.

[–] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (16 children)

Doing fuck all about it? The people doing something about it you won't hear about.

You won't hear about any local resistance in another country. You won't hear about any local organization in another country. Hell even if someone was planning another assassination attempt, you wouldn't be hearing about it unless they were really stupid.

[–] oceancloud@discuss.online 6 points 1 day ago

The thing that has been most shocking to me about this entire thing is how much foreigners have sided with Trump over the American people. Blaming Americans for Trump completely, even while knowing he is a dictator who ignores the wishes of his own people, and then inviting Trump to their countries to shake hands and make deals. Unbelievable.

I've seen foreign nationals say that we "deserve" to be raided by ICE for "voting for" Trump... the dictator who ignores the popular vote. They're on Trump's side, they want the same things he wants, they just want to feel morally superior.

People are getting in ICE's face and filming their crimes at risk to ther lives for people they've never met.

Some of us are quite aware.

[–] oceancloud@discuss.online 4 points 1 day ago (8 children)

You're gonna keep inviting Trump into your country, he's gonna keep shaking hands with your leaders, and even if he kills all of us American citizens all at once in a state-sponsored massacre and you hear about it on the news, your country will not impose sanctions, and you'll see your leader shaking hands with him on television the following month.

Gonna get down voted to shit for this, but that's a crap article. It's just one guys saying "I hate MAGA, and would happily watch them drown". Since he never talks to them, the title is completely unsupported. A better article would have at least looked for some evidence, e.g. via some interviews or surveys or something.
