It does blow my mind a little that they don't even appear to be doing the most basic of testing anymore.
According to The Verge, 8GB of memory works mostly fine for basic tasks such as web browsing, text editing, and video streaming on YouTube and other streaming platforms. However, the laptop would hang or freeze "for several seconds" whenever someone joined a video call on Microsoft Teams.
Not surprising. Probably the only Microsoft app more bloated than Windows is Teams.
I hate teams so much. Some of my friends have never used anything else and they're like "I don't understand what's so bad about it"

I don't think that is an 8GB RAM issue. I had a client last year but a bunch of the new surface pros with ARM chips, and they had similar hangups with 16GB of RAM. Frankly, those things never worked "right", and I think it's a problem with how Windows emulates x86/x64 apps on them.
8GB of RAM is still not great for Windows 11, but I feel like it's a separate issue.
Which blows my mind they fucked up teams so badly! It started out as a very lightweight video platform from Skype, running on low end hardware. Then to be more competitive against Zoom, ramped up the garbage until it's practically useless...
So a perfect streaming platform to make use of the cloud computing that comes after the AI bubble collapses and bunch of data centers need to find new usage.

I'd say the 10 Chrome tabs were probably affecting memory usage more.
Apple performed some incredible wizardry to make iOS and macOS as performant as they come with the chips/hardware they had over the past decade.
I really thought those Microsoft laptops would take a page out of Apple. And do the same thing.
Nope. Microsoft continues to shovel their dog shit resource hogging OS and demand hardware "figure it out".
Although I never owned one, I can't believe the industry didn't follow the original iPhone in its responsiveness. It would prioritize user input above everything else, even graphics rendering. When you clicked on something, it would provide feedback. Contrast that with modern UI across all platforms, and you can regularly click on something and have nothing happen for 5-10 seconds.
I'm increasingly getting the feeling they really fucked themselves with the layoffs and genuinely lost some invaluable core team members across the board, and now they are technically incapable of improving certain aspects anymore.
I have to deal with M$ onsite at work regularly. They are mandated to use copilot for basically everything now. When you ask them for tech guidance, it's a copilot answer. Presentations are generated by copilot. It's cringe to say the least. I can only imagine that's how it is for all their products now.
That makes me feel bad for the remaining team members of those vital teams.

I have an 8gb M1 Mac mini that my dad gave me. Put Asahi on it with a view to using it for my Home Assistant server. That on its own was perfectly fine, but adding an LLM for voice commands absolutely fucked the RAM. No amount of swap or anything could help, it'd just hang.
So I set it back to macOS, because it can hook into Apple APIs for LLMs that utilise the GPU in a way that Asahi couldn't. And yeah, Home Assistant + LLM runs really well even in a UTM VM. Same system, completely different outcomes.
And that's no shade to Asahi. What they've achieve is little short of incredible, but there's certain shit that Apple just won't let them access.
Its honestly so bad lol. Windows rapidly declines in performance once iflt boots. When I switch to my gaming desktop it's just lightning fast always (Linux btw). And it's not because I'm doing less. And my windows laptop is not even a year old. My desktop is from 2019. Lol.

honestly that's the best thing about stuff like this. the average windows user simply not knowing what they have. Take thinkpads for example. you'd THINK the average thinkpad user would know what they have. a god damn brilliant rock solid laptop. nope. business dudes just toss those things once they hit the 4 to 5 year mark. I now have 5 thinkpads I bought online for dirt cheap that all run linux like a dream. And the beauty of thinkpads is it's so damn easy to install multiple OS'/Distros on the same machine just hitting F12 at boot and picking which one you want.
I dunno, I bought my first ThinkPad, then a used ThinkServer, then advised a family member to get a ThinkPad.
My TP battery dies with light tasks from full to flat in less than an hour; it is shelved most of the time, used for specific purposes, booted maybe 50x in 4 years. The battery was replaced under extended warranty and within a month it was just as degraded as the one it replaced. There is no Linux support, since it has a cellular model, so after a month of testing I settled on Xubuntu. It only has 2 USB C ports, one disguised as a dock port, and 1 USB A port. This machine was $1.5k USD and the extended warranty was a few dollars shy of that amount, too. Buyers remorse out the ass.
The TS, it's a tower config, the parts are good on paper but they use proprietary psu connectors and, I shit you not, a proprietary cpu heatsink mounting holes, so you can't replace it with off-the-shelf parts (they drilled the holes bigger, then added retention pegs). Following the bios update instructions to the letter, including a ups, killed both boards (yes, I bought an identical replacement). The case is trash and makes doing anything internally a huge pain in the ass. I recently swapped to a different board and case during an upgrade, it's so much better.
The TP my father bought at my suggestion (he didn't want to wait for a Framework) arrived with cooling issues, online forums say it's a known issue for over a year. I swapped it for an identical unit, but nope, same issue. I sent it back and got a custom build of a different TP family, waited the month for it to arrive, booted it up, no cooling issues... aaaand Windows isn't activated, no key present. Support wanted to swap the mobo or send it back so I let them do the song and dance with a tech swapping the board. It didn't solve the problem, of course, so I reach out and say 'either refund the $200 we paid for the windows license, give me the key, or I want a full refund'. We ordered a Framework the next day and sent the TP back.
I definitely missed the boat on TPs being amazing, because this is utter dogshit.
My current "beater" laptop Is a Lenovo P71. Wouldn't take Windows 11, so it got chucked in the recycle pile. I snagged it, provisioned a power supply and an SSD, and it runs like a dream with Linux. I like it enough, that I may even purchase a battery for it, so it doesn't die when I move it around.
