Thanks for making sure to keep the dumbos included but still making us work just a little to be included.

[-] TheEntity@kbin.social 4 points 8 months ago

I still don't get it. Any help?

The square root of negative 1 is "i". The "i" referrs to an imaginary number. When you square a number (e.g. 2^2 ) the result will always be positive. This is because you are multiplying the number with itself, and a negative number multiplied by another negative number will be positive. So -2 * -2 = 4, -3 * -3 = 9, and so on.

A square root is the inverse of this. It attempts to find what the original number was that was squared, so sqrt(4) = 2, sqrt(9) = 3, and so on. However, what do you do if you have sqrt(-4)? There's no way for a square to result in a negative number, so the result must be imaginary. So sqrt(-4) = 2i, sqrt(-9) = 3i, and so on. As such, sqrt(-1) = i.

For the next part, when you divide one number by another, it is sometimes referred to as [first number] over [second number].

Finally, 8, well, sounds like "ate".

So sqrt(-1)/8 = i/8 = i over eight= I over ate.

(Sorry if this came off as condescending near the end, I'm trying to be thorough in case you aren't a native English speaker)

It seems I was only having trouble with the connecting "eight" to "ate", but damn, this is a solid explanation of the other parts too!

[-] Hjalamanger@feddit.nu 4 points 8 months ago

Thank you! I only got as far as i divided by 8... But now I kinda get it (-: |>

[-] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.de 4 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Very thorough. I’ll just add stylization: βˆšβˆ’Μ…1̅ = 𝑖

Edit: minus

[-] glibg10b@lemmy.ml 3 points 8 months ago

Forgot the minus

Square root of -1 is called i because it's an imaginary number

[-] Melkath@kbin.social 2 points 8 months ago

Thanks for giving the last piece of the answer so everyone can be included, and those who didn't know can learn.

[-] Hereforpron2@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 8 months ago

Just wish I could remember the spoiler formatting haha

Square root of -1 is called i because it's an imaginary number butl gets used often

[-] SomeoneSomewhere@lemmy.nz 3 points 8 months ago

TitleI over-ate.

[-] Bebo@literature.cafe 2 points 8 months ago

Finally figured out after repeating it 2-3 times in my mind. Before that I was like what has i by 8 got to do with thanksgiving.

[-] Thwompthwomp@lemmy.world 32 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

j eighth? J over 8? It took me an embarrassingly long time to remember to use i :(

[-] Isoprenoid@programming.dev 41 points 8 months ago

Spot the electrical engineer.

[-] ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 8 months ago

I'm pretty sure ~~everyone~~ Americans says this after thanksgiving

[-] fossilesque@mander.xyz 8 points 8 months ago

Americans say this after every giant fucking portion.

Probably yes.

But I think he wanted to highlight that we do no have such feast here in Europe.

[-] ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 8 months ago

My apologies dear mate.

[-] fossilesque@mander.xyz 3 points 8 months ago

Listen, I'm an American in the UK and they do Thanksgiving Dinner every Sunday here. It's kind of great.

[-] Oisteink@feddit.nl 0 points 8 months ago

You see those portions only look huge from far away. For Americans it’s just right (their ideal body is Trump)

that's a pretty unconventional place to put the i no?

it would be either i125e-3 or 125e-3*i

[-] Chais@sh.itjust.works 9 points 8 months ago

Took me a sec.
