I've seen both these anime (Strawberry Marshmallow and Asobi Asobase) and I always liked these two characters, cause I can kinda see myself in them in sort of a reverse and less exaggerated way. I think these characters can really be seen as generally representative of the language troubles that many immigrants' children experience, like being expected to have a higher skill in a language than you really have, and what that can do to your self-esteem or your sense of identity. I think this might be a more pronounced issue for children of English-speaking immigrants than immigrants of other language backgrounds, though, just because of the prestige that English has.

I'm gonna be honest, I'd only ever heard the "nǐ hǎo nyan" jingle in that one brony fan-animation of Derpy Hooves doing the dance, where there's a random weird bit in the middle implying that Derpy is inviting Doctor Whooves to make a little pony sex tape. And then in the years after I watched that brony fan-animation, the jingle would keep randomly popping back into my head, without me remembering where I first heard it, and for some reason never thinking to look into either where I first heard the jingle, or where it originally came from... And now, serendipitously, I stumbled upon the original source.

And with that I have gotten closure about yet another random weeb thing from my childhood that I didn't even realize I wanted closure about.

I love the animation style on this. Reminds me a bit of Fog Hill and the Five Elements.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re continuing The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2006), the smash-hit anime about the wacky adventures of an eccentric, exuberant schoolgirl and her not-quite-as-boisterous friends. Episodes 19 through 24 tonight.

After that is A Christmas Carol (2009), a CGI animated feature from Robert Zemeckis, the guy behind Back to the Future (1985), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), and Forrest Gump (1994), among others. This one uses the same technique as The Polar Express (2004), so pretty much the whole thing looks like a video game cutscene. But hey, it’s got Jim Carrey chewing scenery as Scrooge, so it should still be a good time.

After that is Nezha (2019), a Chinese animated feature about a child (the eponymous Nezha) who is born from a sacred seed that will help him protect the world from a world-threatening demon. But whoops, the good seed was swapped with an evil pill that causes the kid to grow up as a demon instead. Now he’s a little hellion who beats up everyone. Will he fulfill his destiny anyway? I guess we’ll find out. This is the only feature to date of director Yang Yu; it was, however, an enormous hit in China, currently ranked #4 on their list of highest-grossing films of all time

I'm enjoying it significantly. The pacing is a lot tighter than the '89 original, and while that ends up leaving out details that I think make some of the characters more interesting (mainly thinking about Nabiki's various money schemes here), I think it's probably for the best for a modern comedy. It's also a closer adaptation of the manga overall, which is good I think.

I also really like how both the dubbed voice actors, and translation choices add a lot more pathos to Ranma, Ryoga, and Akane in particular. It's difficult to put a finger on, but for me it really feels like the staff are overall better at grappling with the shittier aspects of Ranma & Akane's situations (namely their arranged marriage, and a lot of the villains misgendering/harassing Ranma when he's in "girl mode") without being lurid about it.

Anyways, what is HB's opinion on the matter?
