I get hella stoned and watch Foodfight! at least once a year. It’s my “favorite” movie.

Everything about it, from the implied beastiality between Charlie Sheen and Hillary Duff, to the weird gay bat, to the shitweasel is a masterclass in what not to do in a movie. It transcends badness and becomes something sublime. The entire plot is about how store brands/generics are Nazis, and one of the Nazis absolutely chews the scenery in a way that makes Brian Blessed look reserved.

Equilibrium (2002) wasn’t well received when it came out. I think it’s still “bad” on RT but imdb has it at 7.3 now. I don’t care if gun-kata is silly and dumb, it looks cool as fuck.

It's the Matrix except the main character has the same name as my Dad. So, A+

I loved that movie, thanks for reminding me about it.

This was one of my favorites as a kid. It was heavily influenced by The Matrix obviously

In the DVD commentary, the writer/director talked about how he'd had the basic idea, including gun kata, since high school. He could have been lying but I think he was honest and this was sort of a case of independent parallel ideas, since somebody turbo nerdy enough to come up with gun kata probably had influence from Hong Kong action movies that similarly influenced The Matrix.

The action style and flow is much different than The Matrix, and while both plots are about fighting the system, Equilibrium is much more straight forwardly grabbing elements from classic dystopias.

I feel like I saw that too.. DVD extras were great

The tagline on the movie box even said as much: "Forget 'The Matrix'! This movie will blow you away!"

[–] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

I don't think that proves much besides marketing people slapping anything on a cover long after the movie was made.

The dog scene absolutely broke me. Probably the hardest I cried at a movie when I saw it for the first time.

[–] P1nkman@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Have you watched Grave of the Fireflies? I cried for hours afterwards. One of the best movies I've seen. Refuse to watch it again.

You should try Dolls by Kitano. It's a bunch of failed love stories, music is awesome, I cry every time.

[–] P1nkman@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Never heard of it. Radarr is doing it's thing. Thanks for the suggestion!

Don't come back to me if you cry. Really an amazing movie though.
