Chairman Mamdani met with President Trump in a historic meeting, no doubt the beginning of normalization of relations between the United States and the People's Republic of New York. Some experts have also begin speculating that the US will vote for the formal entry of the People's Republic of New York into the UN over the Republic of New York as the sole representative of New York.

Only Trump could go to New York

Some shitlib talking head was just on CNN saying how Trump loves communists more than americans

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 43 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They're mad that the communist can actually do the bipartisanship they always are hounding after.

"We have differences, but we both are motivated to look good, so let's focus on that" goes a whole lot farther than just tailing Trump's platform and talking points like a sad puppy for 10 years.

At the same time, imagine going ahead with meeting Trump. I get why he did, but ughhh

honestly it might be an effective strategy for keeping trump off his back, winning him over with a little charm.

Sheinbaum has been effective with it

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The big difference is that Sheinbaum is the president of a sovereign country that, while being dependent on the United States, also holds significant bargaining chips that can be leveraged against Trump. Mamdani has no such leverage so I think they aren't comparable.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Its comparable in the sense of "trump doesn't care about anything policy wise besides his he felt about the last person he talked to"

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not to overintellectualize Trump or fall into the Varoufakis trap of thinking everything is 5D chess, but I don't think it's good strategy to assume your enemies ignore material reality in favor of vibes.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

Partly agree but he's also a very foolish person from everything I've seen in the past decade

[–] CharlieTheOctopus@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

If anything i think this only makes the case for Mamdani and Trump meeting stronger

That's essentially their interpretation of Trump having more respect for people who stand tall and don't act like a lapdog, even if they're an adversary, than for your average Democrat who will lick his boots at the first opportunity.
