The Russian Revolution of 1905, also known as the First Russian Revolution, was a wave of mass political and social unrest that spread through vast areas of the Russian Empire. It included labor strikes, peasant unrest, military mutinies, and the formation of grassroots councils (soviets) of people's power. It is widely felt that the 1905 revolution set the stage for the 1917 Russian Revolutions, and for Bolshevism to emerge as a distinct political movement. Lenin later called it "The Great Dress Rehearsal", without which the "victory of the October Revolution in 1917 would have been impossible".

The 1905 revolution was spurred by the Russian defeat in the Russo-Japanese War, which ended in the same year, but also by the growing realization by a variety of sectors of society of the need for reform in the face of agrarian crisis, economic stagnation, and political repression. However, it is generally felt that the detonator of the insurrection were the events of “Bloody Sunday”, in which a mass demonstration -led by priest and police agent, Georgy Gapon- which had sought to petition the Tsar for relief, was fired upon by the troops, killing hundreds of marchers.

There followed clashes in St. Petersburg, and spreading unrest throughout the rest of the Russian Empire. Strikes spread in three great waves: January, October, and November. In June the crew of the battleship Potemkin famously mutinied against their officers. There were further clashes in St. Petersburg in December.

The rebellion did not overthrow the autocracy, but by late 1905 the Tsar felt obligated by events to agree to constitutional reforms, including the establishment of the State Duma, a multi-party political system, and the Russian Constitution of 1906.

lmao a tech bro just ended their long argument defending trans people against a transphobe with "we're descendents of industrial anglo-saxons, not native americans and tribal people"

Edit: they also just said the transphobe must be anti-military too. Never trust a tech bro

friends, it is with a heavy heart i must inform you that i have contracted a case of the big horny. i hope you will be understanding as i proceed to do absolutely nothing with this condition, aside from trying very hard to suppress fantasies and being cripplingly awkward around people i find vaguely attractive (and not even in an endearing way!), eventually blooming into all-out avoidance.

i have already attempted to turn myself in to the volcel police, but they told me that all their officers were already occupied with more pressing cases. if those people are indeed worse off than me, i only hope they can get the help they need, sooner rather than later. the fact that some people disrespect our boys in blue ~balls~ makes me sick to my stomach.

I feel so lonely. I needed to be surrounded by some combination of queer, neurodivergent, artsy people who cared about social issues when I was growing up

Studying computer science was such a mistake. I love my factory worker parents for moving to a rich neighborhood for me but going to academically focused STEM schools in nice suburbs was not it

Haven't been able to sleep right for a long time.

This was easier when I was a kid. My friends were kids too, so we were up all night on what passed for messenger apps in the 12th century. It's lonely now that everyone's old, has kids, has jobs, has responsibilities. Just me, keeping hte night watch.

How does anyone meet people irl??

I go to college club meetings, I've tried friend/meetup apps like Lex, I try to spend as much time irl as possible and talk to the people who sit near me in class. I've got some acquaintances but like nobody I really actually know know, and I've tried to like organize meet ups with those people and it like doesn't pan out 9 time out of 10 so I don't see them with any regularity to like actually move beyond being acquaintances to being friends

Finished my latest weave! Heres some pictures.

long postHeres the pattern in full. Its just one continual woven band pattern.

Heres the back. This one is a good example of a non-reversible pattern.

Heres the length up against my last belt. Its slightly longer but they're a lot closer than I expected. (bonus cat)

Heres the belt on me over my black tunic.

And here it is over the white tunic. This one goes pretty well with both colors, but I think I prefer it over the white, lets the color pop a bit more. (tbh I say this about every belt I make, think I might just like my white undertunic more than my black one, colorwise.)

Not wasting my time on clown content has introduced me to actual leftist journalism that doesn't revolve around stupid Youtube debates. Ben Norton, Michael Hudson, Rania Khalek, Richard Medhurst, etc. They really break down the neoliberal world order and expose it for what it is.

One big difference between them and neoliberal content creators are how lazy the neoliberals are. Most of the time they'll just throw names and insults at the leftists for not understanding things. Then they go on to make wild claims about China and North Korea with dubious sources backing them up, only to strawman and get offended if you point it out.

There hasn't been a Western military conflict that's gone well in so fucking long. I've been screaming my entire adult life, and people are still like "Well Syria/Ukraine/Israel is different". FFS this story has been on repeat since 2001.

The only war that the West "won" was limited engagements against weaker powers, like Yugoslavia or Iraq in '91. Since then, people have been sniffing their own propaganda too hard.

new boundary-push in light novel slop depravity discovered. protagonist sells one-time assailant into slavery for attacking them. not only do they participate in the slave trade, they are the trafficker. this is never brought up again. the moral implications of this are never discussed. there is no indication that this is out of the norm. capitalism breeds innovation.

It will never cease to amaze me how much elderly workers lick boot even when no management is around to hear it. “Aww jeez, corporate higher up that we rarely ever talked to isn’t around anymore? I didn’t like what he said but I like the way he said it. “You know your schedules, so show up to work!” (Referring to people reasonably wanting to stay WFH after covid.)”

It’s like watching a dog gleefully eat its own shit and lick its lips afterwards. dog-screm

David Graeber's "Bullshit Jobs" did not need to be a whole book. He should've left it as the essay he started with. I don't know why you need 333 pages to expound on this concept.

Also he loves to shit on the "inefficiency" of the USSR, while literally writing a book about capitalist inefficiency. Clown man.

dog bonelessness

"Imagine a small community comprising 100 dogs. Each morning they set off into the field to dig for bones. If there are enough bones for all buried in the field, then all the dogs could succeed in their search.

Now imagine that one day the 100 dogs set off for the field as usual but this time they find there are only 95 bones buried.

Some dogs who were always very skilled at finding bones might dig up two bones and others will dig up the usual one bone. But, as a matter of accounting, at least five dogs will return home bone-less.

Now imagine that the government decides that this is unsustainable and decides that it is the skills and motivation of the bone-less dogs that is the problem. They are not skilled or motivated enough. Thus, if the problem were to be constructed to be an individual one, then an individual- ised solution would be appropriate.

So, a range of dog psychologists and dog trainers might be called in to work on the attitudes and skills of the bone-less dogs. The dogs undergo assessment and are assigned case managers. They are told that unless they train they will miss out on their nightly bowl of food that the government provides to them while bone-less. They feel despondent.

After running and digging skills are imparted to the bone-less dogs, things start to change. While the training helps some dogs improve their luck at finding bones, others turn up boneless.

All the training does is to shuffle the queue, always leaving at least 5 dogs without bones.

No amount of training and motivational speeches can resolve the problem; the only solution is to provide more bones.

The point is that when there are insufficient jobs available in the economy, the unemployed are powerless to redress that shortage no matter how hard they search.

Supply side programmes, concentrating on the motivation or skills of the unemployed, will only shuffle the jobless queue in a situation of jobs shortage"

I was making a shake when a family member got on the phone, and since I'm a courteous guy I decided to let her finish her call before I turned on the blender.

I've been standing in the kitchen for forty five minutes. Her call isn't ending. She can't take it to another room. I'm debating whether or not I should say "fuck it" and just send it or if I should hold out another fifteen minutes.
