That's camping with all the shitty parts and a really nice cot.

Wind, rain, dust, falling shit, bugs, animals, etc. You can get a similar atmosphere by having a tent and opening the vent flaps. Or like, sleeping under a tarp to mitigate rain if you really want that outdoorsy feel. I knew a guy who slept in a hammock on nice nights but I fear the skeeters.

[-] MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 11 points 11 months ago

That's camping with all the shitty parts and a really nice cot.

That is indeed the joke.

[-] ItDoBeHowItDoBe@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

There are nice bug nets made specifically to fit around hammocks. You see the sky and not be eaten alive.

[-] tissek@sopuli.xyz 4 points 11 months ago

Some hammocks even have the bug net built in creating a nice bugfree cocoon.

[-] Sibbo@sopuli.xyz 34 points 11 months ago

Did you know that the weather in the mountains can change rapidly and without warnings?

[-] MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 15 points 11 months ago

Sorry, tarps and scaffolding is extra.

[-] FoxFairline@lemmy.blahaj.zone 31 points 11 months ago

That was a joke Art installation AFAIK a decade back.

Swiss here, no it isn't. Here's a (german) overview of a few "openair hotels": https://www.stilpalast.ch/travel/specials/schlafen-unter-freiem-himmel-7144

This would only be cool if you're somehow guaranteed zero people/predators or cameras in a large enough radius that you won't ever be seen or attacked by an animal. Fucking under the stars on a real bed sounds pretty cool. But there is a building in the background. I would be too paranoid that someone is watching with a telescope

[-] baatliwala@lemmy.world 21 points 11 months ago

Forget zero people/predators, I need a guarantee for zero mosquitoes and flies

[-] TimeSquirrel@kbin.social 8 points 11 months ago

I would be too paranoid that someone is watching with a telescope

I'd just start beating off while staring straight at it with an expressionless face.

[-] onion@feddit.de 5 points 11 months ago

You could have walls but no roof

[-] tryptaminev@feddit.de 11 points 11 months ago

To make it even crazier, you could have a roof that is transparent and you could open. Tada you get as much outdoor as you want, without being soaked wet by the thunderstorm.

[-] ours@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago

A greenhouse? Sounds fun in summer.

[-] MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 5 points 11 months ago

Advanced level “don’t dead, open inside”

[-] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 21 points 11 months ago

There's a solid foundation for this idea but I still don't see it putting a roof over my head to be honest.

[-] AeonFelis@lemmy.world 21 points 11 months ago

Too many wind-blowable things in that "room".

[-] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Exactly. This would only work in a dry summer.

[-] Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc 20 points 11 months ago

Sleeping outdoor without shelter > camping > glamping > glamping outdoor without shelter

Whew, we've come quite far.

[-] gmtom@lemmy.world 18 points 11 months ago

Am I the only one that would actually really enjoy this?

Being outside in the mountains with fresh cool air, but you actually have a proper, comfy warm bed to enjoy as well?

Sign me the fuck up.

[-] Pantherina@feddit.de 17 points 11 months ago

Until it rains... or storms... or there is thunder or snails or dogs barking or whatever. Hell no "-"

[-] pingveno@lemmy.ml 9 points 11 months ago

Or something poops on your face.

[-] gmtom@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

I would have to imagine they have something in place for when it rains, thunder (without rain) would be awesome, you're in the mountains with few neighbours so wouldn't worry about dogs barking, and if you're worried about snails you could put some salt down I guess.

You know, there's this thing called "camping", you should really look into it.

[-] Dutczar@sopuli.xyz 13 points 11 months ago

Without a blanket because the wind blew it away

Sure let me just bring my whole-ass double bed and mattress with me when I go camping 🤡

[-] jpreston2005@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

shit I have a pair of inflatable twin mattresses that can be joined together. open up my sleeping bag, put it down as base warmth, with a pillow and another cozy blanket... That pretty much meets the definition

If you ever slept outside, you know how good it can be. Fresh air, cold winds. Only and only if nothing goes wrong.

[-] Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc 6 points 11 months ago

Fresh air, cold winds, and hypothermia.

[-] M500@lemmy.ml 6 points 11 months ago

There was this bamboo treehouse that my wife and I slept in on a vacation. It was really nice and relaxing. We plan to go back soon.

Someone has a fundamental misunderstanding about what a room is...

[-] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

That doesn't seem unworkable. Just add a few walls and a roof and it would be a nice place to stay.

[-] Plavatos@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 months ago

Wild predators are one thing but what about bats with rabies? You wouldn't even know you got bit until it's too late.

[-] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 6 points 11 months ago

I'd be more worried about the weather.
