The USSR absolutely had trashy beach towns.
Wanna go to a trashy beach down with a big statue of Lenin in it
Lenin statue wearing a dozen shitty leis placed by drunken spring breakers is a damn mood
god, you and me both.
Putin actually annexed crimea because he wanted Sebastopol
there will be fewer shops that exclusively sell t shirts with text in impact font, but drinking beer on the beach is, i believe, a cornerstone of communism
No I think at least some of the T-shirt shops have to stay. Getting a really weird trashy T-shirt with something bizarrely sexual on it is a core part of the beach town experience.
We can keep like 1/3rd of the trashy T shirt shops. There’s definitely too many but they are necessary
The mainlandwrs can take the dirt dyed t-shirt economy from my cold dead pair of hands, bahd.
Shirts and crappy quality caps/hats with a random logo on it, usually involving a dolphin.
Based on my dad's t shirt collection some of those tourist shirts actually have a decent lifespan. He's still got one with a big spear fish on it from the early 90s.
Also palm trees
Deal, but no cars. Only trams and bikes and those pedal-powered trolleys with like 20 sets of pedals.
Honestly a lot of beach towns seem to have better bike infrastructure than your average big city
If they didn't there'd be like 500 deaths a day from drunk driving
rickshaw-based public transit
I would legit love to be a rickshaw driver. I love exercise and love introducing people to cool shit. Take out the profit motive and put in a society where everyone has their needs taken care of and I would do that and teach surfing
Imagine a life where you freelance helping people. Like a surfing lesson here and a rickshaw there, but when it wears you down, you can just take a break because working isn’t a necessity.
Among the accomplishments of the USSR was the widespread ability to vacation on the Black Sea. Some unions also had Black Sea resorts for their members.
a beachtown in every pot
Turns out this isn't controversial at all lmao.
but hell yeah let's call it "boardwalk socialism" and we'll all drink and play mini golf
the peoples' golf
Calling my post-rev mini golf & laser tag place PPW but instead of Protracted People’s War it’s the Pew Pew War
*edit: or Protracted Putter’s War
The revolution must have bread but it must also have bottomless mimosas and a Jimmy Buffet cover band.
I 100% agree. Once I broke down in Blackpool and I had a great time after I found a mechanic and dug around a scrapyard to find some discount parts. 10/10 would wander around a dilapidated past-its-prime sea side British town again
Towns embracing trash future and being dilapidated because of social decay and being left behind by capitalism
towns embracing a chill dirt bag culture because it's fun, residents are still considered equal in society and not just gig economy robots for Airbnb users
All I needed was more drugs and a hanged man to investigate and I could have really channeled my inner superstar! (I don't have an inner cop acab)
Not controversial at all beach towns are awesome. Under communism everyone will be able to go enjoy them instead of just rich people
Eh some beach towns you don't have to be that rich to enjoy if you don't mind your motel being a bit moldy.
Or camping in a run down campsite
Myrtle Beach is a prime example
And please for the love of all that is holy bring back the vibes of mom and pop ski lifts/lodges. I yearn for the atmosphere and art of stoner snowboarders. Now it's all rich people. Boarding culture used to be incredibly anti capitalist but those stickers on the ski lift have faded and the snow is melting.
Mom and pop is just a sanitized word for the petty bourgeoisie. You may yearn for the day when these ski resorts are more like what they were from your childhood and less corporatized, but even though you have good memories of these places, objectively it was a bad thing to exist even then. Let’s take surfing for example, the moment white people co-opted this indigenous activity they became actual surf nazis, they closed off beaches, they commodified it, and this is what is considered the golden age of surfing, it set the culture of it going forward. Just because it was not corporatized doesn’t mean there wasn’t white supremacy rooted in the aesthetics of it from the beginning. So many activities are like this, pretty much any sport is promoting the capitalist hellscape we are in, and it hurts to hear this, but when true liberation comes from capitalism, there will be no more trashy beach towns or shitty ski resorts or any kind of thing associated with what we consider vacation or recreation because our whole conception of that is classist and rooted in capitalism. Humanity’s future is an ascetic one, people will learn to be happy with simple lives when they are not alienated from their own work. If the material conditions are the same everywhere then there’s no reason for leisurely travel. TLDR communism is when no vacation.
Unironically a bad take along with the “there will be no restaurants under socialism” take. Why the fuck wouldn’t there be? You know those trashy beach towns entire existence is attracting tourism right? Maybe under socialism it’s more like people wanting to show off their lifestyle and culture as it pertains to the sea? People like to see water and sand, that’s not going to change under socialism. Same thing with restaurants. Why wouldn’t they exist? Suddenly people are going to cook every single meal themselves? It’s nice to get a meal made by someone else and there is no shortage of people who love to cook for others.
Nono I get you, I'm well aware of what petty bourgeoisie is. I was hoping I could skirt around that by prefacing mom and pop with "vibes of". I only miss the atmosphere, not the structure. Under communism this would probably take the form of publicly owned and maintained ski lift and resting lodge populated and primarily utilized by the workers that live near it.
In all honesty it would likely develop and entirely different culture in this world since anti-capitalism would no longer be counter culture. The nostalgia I feel for the 90s and early 2000s snowboarder aesthetic will probably never be truly satisfied but a man can dream.
I strongly disagree with your belief that sports and travel wouldn't exist under communism. I don't think people can be truly satisfied just because their material conditions are met. There is so much more to life than basic biological needs and social needs. People have desires (not needs) beyond that. No amount of connection to my work, leisure time for hobbies, or interpersonal connection will ever lessen my desire to see the beauty that nature can offer. I currently live in an incredibly flat and barren place, it is genuinely the one of the ugliest places I think I could find to live in. But honestly, even if it wasn't, even if I lived in the snowy mountains and mossy evergreen forests of Washington, I think I'd still want to experience somewhere else if I could. Basically what I'm getting at in regards to vacation is, generally, humans like seeing and experiencing new things; being stuck in the same place their whole lives can drain them. Humans have a basic need for beauty, we genuinely become depressed when our surroundings are too unappealing.
As for sports I think don't think they'd be nearly as big of a deal but they would absolutely still exist. Sports have been proven to exist for many thousands of years pre capitalism and pre feudalism. It's a form of basic play that can bring a community together in the case of team sports. Extreme sports like snowboarding however, are primarily individualistic activities and would probably see a decline but I don't think they'd disappear entirely. When you were a kid did you ever pick up a skateboard and try to learn tricks? Would you say that you did that because you were alienated from work and because your material conditions were unmet? I think it's more that people enjoy learning new skills and like the adrenaline. So sure, snowboarding might not be nearly as big as it is now but I refuse to believe it would die out entirely especially since it has already been established and the infrastructure for it already exists.
What are your thoughts @johnmccainstumor@hexbear.net
Declaring Ocean City, Maryland to be the Taiwan of North American after the revolution
playing workers & resources right now and the game literally has the option to build trashy beach towns in it
i'm going to make one on a nice alpine lake. it will be "Ocean City on the Lake"
On the east coast, the only walkable neighborhoods that aren’t cities are on barrier islands.
Can't see why there wouldn't be. Beach Town people are regionally different but all share a Beachness in their core soul. It was the laziest settlers that just set up shop.near the Beach and generations of slack have led to all coastal regions of the earth having their own unique Beach Town Cultures. There's a certain spirit in the nauture of those who want to live near water but have no desire to go on a boat or be around places that boat use was an economically viable thing. There have been shitty Beach towns since the dawn of Man. The first settled civilization was a shitty Beach town and when it got too commercial and touristy, people left to make their own shitty Beach towns and so on. The Shitty Beach Drive exists in only some of us, but has been essential to all human development.
True lol, but I think these towns exist all over the world. And then you go swim in the beach, get tossed around by the surf, duck under the waves, somehow make it back to shore without needing the assistance of the lifeguards, and do it all again tomorrow until it's time to go home
Oh god getting PTSD from episodes of Jersey Shore
I'm not including any of the Jersey ones in this assessment
I can hear the ocean waves
What does Cuba do with their beaches?
Castro ate all the beaches with a giant spoon
PCB Baybeee!
Hell yeah, Scarborough and Blackpool are great. Llandudno is gorgeous and will be returned to the people of Wales
This is like the one good element of American Culture and it should be preserved.
What about state+county fairs those fucking rock
