Donald Trump on Sunday proposed a new policy that many critics said is equivalent to legalizing "The Purge."

Trump spoke at a rally in Pennsylvania, where he admitted that his attendees were "falling asleep" at one of his earlier rallies. Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign noted that, as Trump was still speaking at the swing-state event over the weekend, rallygoers placed directly behind the former president started to funnel out of the building.

One comment Trump made drew condemnation on social media, as well as numerous comparisons to The Purge, a film series based on a dystopian world in which the government makes all crimes legal for a 12-hour period.

As reported by Sebastian Smith, AFP Washington desk chief, "Trump in Erie, PA, says in US 'the police aren’t allowed to do their job.' To stop crime, you need 'one really violent day.' He says: 'One rough hour and I mean real rough, the word would get out and it would end immediately.'"

when people tell you who they are... believe them.

Sooo many people follow trump without believing a word he says.

[-] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 25 points 3 months ago

They believe him. They like it.

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago

until it's him that gets fucked over.

what they don't realize is he's fucking everyone over constantly. They're being fucked over and too stupid to realize it.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago

I don't understand a word he says! He says a lot of words, but never forms a full sentence. He just drifts through half sentences, and then spews out repeating words, questions what he just said, as if he himself doesn't know what he's saying. Then he says the second half of a sentence he never started.

Repeat this patern for hours, and now you know why people leave his rallys early. Either that, or they want to leave before they get shot.

that's not "the purge" at all. If it was then everyone would be allowed to crime, but he's clearly just talking about the police. It's blatant authoritarian rhetoric, but nothing to do with the movie.

It's not The Purge, it's Kristallnacht.

Only the police are allowed to do crimes, the rest of us just get purged.

“The Purge”.

[-] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 64 points 3 months ago

Reminder: crime is at an all time low.

[-] BertramDitore@lemm.ee 35 points 3 months ago

Across nearly every metric. We are living in historically safe times.

[-] jonne@infosec.pub 18 points 3 months ago

Crime has skyrocketed among former Presidents though.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago

Well, it DID increase for a bit, but has been dropping since 2023.

[-] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago

For a bit and then a rapid drop. The point is that crime rates have been crashing since the 90s and these people keep telling us that crime is up. They either don't know that or they are lying to us to knowingly manipulate people and not enough of them get called out on it.

[-] SupraMario@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

It increased because of the pandemic, which was an outlier year.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

It was a rather local maximum, though.

[-] EvilBit@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

I think it’s all just been replaced with unprosecuted white collar crime.

[-] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 41 points 3 months ago

How his loyalist minions don’t see him as a 10 year old child suggesting random actions with no consequences is so far beyond me that I think contemplating the purpose of the universe would be easier to solve.

Every fucking thing he says is some dumbass plan that doesn’t even consider a single consequence of its own action.

This is the mind of a spoiled rotten child that has never had to face a consequence in their life. They have others to do that for them.

“Let’s have a purge! It won’t be me that suffers!”

What a fucking cunt of a man!

[-] circuitfarmer 3 points 2 months ago

Whoever is still going to these rallies is beyond help.

VOTE.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Maybe the cops could all focus that hour on criminals like donnie?

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

For others who have been less than impressed by the accuracy of rawStory's headlines, looks like he legit said something like this. Admittedly, an off the cuff thing we'll take too seriously but it did happen.

Yes don't believe what he says. It's all jokes. Or off the cuff. Don't take the guy seriously what can go wrong.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago

cries in 2016 memes of what if they actually ran trump?

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

It's more that our reacting to everything is exactly what he wants.

An independent or swing voter (the kind whom the Left needs in order to win the election) is not going to read this headline and think trump is actually going to institute the Purge. Instead, they'll take this as "the media blowing trump out of proportion again. Pro ably can't trust them, better do my own research." Which plays directly into donald's hands.

It's like, did you ever bug a younger sibling? The easiest thing to do would be something minor that would make them over react and mom and dad would get pissed about the over reaction and forget the original issue. In this case, donald is poking the media so they over react and announce donald echoes fascist rhetoric or whatever else, putting off independent voters.

I too once thought r/the_donald was funny.
