Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

I don't know how to read this other than him dabbing on the left, like oh you wanted this since day 1, enjoy it for a week.

[–] regul@hexbear.net 89 points 3 weeks ago

It's even more baby-brained than that, because doing it this late in his term means he thinks it would have cost Kamala votes in the general.

Idk how to explain to Democrats that it's not the year 2000 anymore and that Florida is not a swing state. The gusanos will both never vote for you nor would they even be capable of flipping Florida as a bloc.

I think it's a gimme to Trump so that he has something to loudly and publicly reverse

[–] FromPieces@lemmygrad.ml 37 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Is it easy as saying so for Trump to put it back on?

[–] miz@hexbear.net 41 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

well, he has to sign a paper

[–] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 26 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Which is what pisses me off even more. I remember ~4 years ago a reporter asked Psaki about this and she said Biden had other, bigger priorities on his plate. Like it takes 4 seconds to sign this (well maybe more like 40 for Biden), he was not “too busy”.

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

His brain was very busy collapsing in on itself

[–] blobjim@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

He doesn't even need to do that as far as I know.

As a rule of thumb, its always way easier to put sanctions and such in place than it is to remove them.

[–] curmudgeonthefrog@hexbear.net 90 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

I know the Biden admin are doing this cynically but god i hope this stays. The sanctions are evil and they make it so hard for people in Cuba to survive

[–] RedDawn@hexbear.net 69 points 3 weeks ago

Same! Cuban communists were celebrating this in my Facebook feed which is how I found out about it. I really hope it sticks but Trump is pretty much guaranteed to just undo it right away.

[–] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 43 points 3 weeks ago

Unfortunately, the broader sanctions will remain in place but getting off this list will alleviate a bit of pressure.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 36 points 3 weeks ago

I hope so too, but we all know Trump is a petty bitch so he's definitely going to reverse this day one

[–] Spike@hexbear.net 80 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Obama also blocked the Dakota pipeline in December just before leaving office. Its just an easy way to look like an ally knowing that its going to be overturned within a year at most.

[–] Lovely_sombrero@hexbear.net 36 points 3 weeks ago

Trump implemented these sanctions in his last week in office in 2021. And Biden kept them in place this entire time.

[–] CommCat@hexbear.net 17 points 3 weeks ago

exactly, it's ammo for libs to say "see if you voot'd , you would've gotten something, instead the damn Cheato has returned!" Trump's team will reverse it withing a month I bet.

its crazy how the starvation of millions is used as a cynical chesspiece to spite the other party

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 19 points 3 weeks ago

I've literally seen Giuliani excitedly telling people how much Iranians were starving (including gleefully mentioning Iranians selling their organs); America's literally just Israel but bigger

[–] Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net 53 points 3 weeks ago

Hahhahahahahahhaha agony-shivering , do you just do this just to piss me off, Biden

That you could've done this, but instead you proved yourself as the Clintonite you are

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 48 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Could've done this day fucking one

They play with people's lives just to do little political gotchas

[–] sgtlion@hexbear.net 47 points 3 weeks ago

The sick thing is that this was clearly never an actual objective, otherwise he would've done it years ago. If the Democrats had won, he wouldn't bother.

This is just posturing so he can argue he proved the left wrong.

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 42 points 3 weeks ago

what a dickhead, hope cubans contract so many solar panels while trump fucks around

[–] ComradeMonotreme@hexbear.net 41 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (3 children)

Obviously it won't happen but it would be crazy if Trump normalised relations with Cuba to spite the Dems.

"O-bam-a he tried to do it, but he couldn't. Sleepy Joe. Kah-mala they don't want you to go to Hav-ana. But I dooo. Castro was a bad man, he had the look, you know? Hat. Beard. Cigar. This new guy. Diaz-Canal. Nice guy. Very handsome. No cigar!"

[–] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 17 points 3 weeks ago

Removing the blockade would literally be the best single thing any US president has done in decades.

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago

You know it's funny but if Trump said this his voters would absolutely agree wholeheartedly; they went from zero on Greenland to 'We're taking it and I'd like to see you stop us'

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

I rate this Trump emulation "close but no cigar".

[–] godlessworm@hexbear.net 30 points 3 weeks ago

mashallah, hopefully trump is too caught up in whatever sick epstein island shit we all know his worthless subhuman pig ass is up to all the time and forgets to overturn this. and fuck brandon for waiting this long.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 30 points 3 weeks ago

The cynicism of Democrats knows no bounds.

[–] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The fuck? why's he doing a good thing what's the catch

[–] AntiOutsideAktion@hexbear.net 46 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The catch is it's going to last exactly 6 days

[–] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago

oh right lmao

What were they on the list for to begin with? Sponsoring the ANC?

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Sponsoring the ANC?

Yes, and also because Cuba helped a lot of leftists (from social-democrats to communists) in latin america, asia and africa.

Cuba was designated as a State Sponsor of Terrorism in 1982 because of its long history of providing advice, safe haven, communications, training, and financial support to guerrilla groups and individual terrorists. This designation was rescinded in 2015. Cuba maintains close and collaborative ties with designated state sponsors of terror such as Iran and North Korea.

The Cuban regime continues to host ELN leaders associated with now-defunct peace talks to reside in Cuba, despite Colombia’s repeated requests for their extradition. Cuba also continues to harbor multiple fugitives who committed or supported acts of terrorism in the United States. The U.S. Department of State certified Cuba as “not cooperating fully” with U.S. counterterrorism efforts for 2019, the first such certification of Cuba since 2015.

Citing peace negotiation protocols, Cuba refused Colombia’s request to extradite 10 ELN leaders living in Havana after that group claimed responsibility for the January 2019 bombing of a Bogota police academy that killed 22 people and injured 87 others. In addition to ELN terrorists, there was credible reporting that FARC dissidents who abandoned the peace process in Colombia traveled to Havana to seek the regime’s support.

On July 28 during the closing remarks of the Sao Paolo Forum in Caracas, Nicolas Maduro stated that Iván Márquez and Jesús Santrich – former FARC leaders who fled Colombia after abandoning the peace process and announced a return to terrorist activities – were both welcome in Venezuela. Cuba is a key supporter of Maduro’s narco-regime and is an active participant in maintaining Maduro’s authority.

2019 bombing of a Bogota police academy
