There's a new captain America?

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 59 points 5 months ago (16 children)

Yeah, you gotta feel kinda bad for Anthony Mackie. Poor guy really getting shafted because the writers can't do anything decent with the MCU properties anymore.

[–] breadcat@sh.itjust.works 36 points 5 months ago (2 children)

he's in marvel movies there's only so bad I can feel for the guy

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (2 children)

I mean, sure, he's getting real paid, but being stuck in the contract means he can't choose to be in better films that might get him more well known as a serious, good actor.

Instead, he may just languish in relative obscurity because while he's been in great stuff prior to the MCU, the MCU has taken a lot of his time away from more quality projects.

He's a good actor, and on some level I'm sure he'd appreciate being known for his talents and not known for being a forgettable MCU star because the writing was so bad, no matter how much money he makes.

But who knows maybe he's happy with the money and doesn't give a shit if people think he's good at his job or not.

[–] Hugin@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

He's been doing some interesting low budget stuff on the side. Synchronic, Io, a bunch of others I haven't seen.

twisted metal was really good, season 2 this summer, no game tho think it got cancelled

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Holy moly, somehow this one slipped under my radar. I'm gonna check it out later, thanks!

[–] 3dmvr@lemm.ee 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Its got rosa from brooklyn 99, they both are like the opposite of typecast for this

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

...also Will Arnett and Thomas Haden Church. What I've watched was pretty fun so far. Honestly surprising for how bad the story was in the original Twisted Metal.

[–] Flocklesscrow@lemm.ee 12 points 5 months ago

Tbf, The Falcon series was pretty good and touched on some subject material that's otherwise almost completely absent in mass media.

[–] Graphy@lemmy.world 14 points 5 months ago (1 children)

That’s how I felt seeing him in altered carbon s2. I know he got a lot of hate for being in season 2 but I don’t think he was necessarily the problem in it.

[–] BertramDitore@lemm.ee 10 points 5 months ago

Totally agree with this. The second season wasn’t great as a whole (though I still enjoyed it and don’t think it deserved all the hate), but I still thought Mackie was excellent in it. He’s a really versatile and talented actor.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 months ago

I actually watched The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, just didn't realize a movie was out.

Yes and he can fly, he can fight, and he can crow.

Oh, there you are Peter.

I'd feel bad for Anthony Mackie that he's inherited an almost thankless task, I say almost, because except for the millions he's making playing a character in major motion pictures should calm his furrowed brow considerably

[–] happydoors@lemm.ee 10 points 5 months ago (1 children)

For real, I think he could rise to the task if given a better character arc. He has moments of gold when the screenwriters let it happen but I think they probably wrote his character into a hole. End of falcon and the winter soldier involves him giving a speech during his final battle? Who wants that? Define the character with actions, not words, people! I think the Marvel team has a huge uphill battle because almost every new character has the same issues.

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Yeah, if anything "Falcon and the Winter Soldier" just cemented this movie as mediocre at best. Every other character in that show was more interesting than Flacon. And obviously it's not his fault, the writing just isn't building falcon as the next Captain America.

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 6 points 5 months ago

He was fantastic in Twisted Metal, somehow he gave a lot of personality to a character called "John Doe".

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Im gonna wait and see for myself, the internet has been shitting on marvel movies regularly since Endgame came out.

[–] TheImpressiveX@lemm.ee 12 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I saw it and posted my thoughts in the discussion thread, but if you want, you can see it for yourself and form your own opinion.

People have been shitting on superhero movies ever since Green Lantern came out, regardless of who made them.

[–] simple@lemm.ee 16 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Lower interest than the marvels? I doubt it.

[–] Microw@lemm.ee 21 points 5 months ago

The Marvels had a target audience that didn't watch the movie, and a "wrong" audience that watched it and didn't like it.

This movie seems to have no hype at all in no audience group.

[–] Syntha@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

CinemaScore doesn't measure interest

Isn't that what it does?

I just have never been impressed with Anthony Mackie. He’s always kind of been a mediocre actor which is fine if you’re in a side character role, but he doesn’t stand up to playing the star character. I’m convinced his performance in the second season of Altered Carbon is why it got cancelled, because that first season was some excellent sci-fi and the lead in that season was good and most importantly convincing. Mackie fell flat.

So him suddenly being the new captain America is…lol. What did marvel think was going to happen here. It’s like that second black panther movie where that antivax lady became the star character. Thrust into the lead role and the movie fell apart.

Anything with Mackie in it will suffer the same fate. I hope this proves me wrong though

[–] smegger@aussie.zone 9 points 5 months ago (5 children)

I'm glad I'm not the only person who feels this way. He lacks a wide range of acting ability, he has only one mode and that's "angry black guy". No subtlety of any kind, no range.

The writing in the second season was much worse, too, unfortunately.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago (1 children)

make 100 of anything, make a hundred blenders a hundred cars or a hundred bottles of hooch - there's gonna be good ones, bad ones, mediocre ones, a whole range.

you can see this in star trek, star wars, marvel, etc.

funny enough, you don't see it in the DCU....because aquaman is a high point over there. blech

[–] IMongoose@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Re: DCU, THE Suicide Squad is quite enjoyable. The series Peacemaker that is a spin-off of it is also good. THE Batman is good, and the Penguin series is good.

But ya, they have some huge stinkers. I basically just assume a DCU product is going to be garbage. I can't believe they still let Zack Snyder make movies.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

The Batman and Penguin are DC but not DCU. The Suicude Squad and Peacemaker are both made by Gunn - they're kind of the unofficial start of a new era. The Zack Snyder days is the DCU we're criticizing. It seems with Gunn things are getting better.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Creature Commandos was surprisingly good as well.

[–] IMongoose@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I hadn't even heard of that, I'll add it to the list. Thanks!

[–] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Animated series on Max that dropped a few weeks ago. It's the first release of James Gunn's DC universe.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

valid points.

I don't think anyone can make a lot of any product and have uniform perfection, it just doesn't work that way.

[–] Bloomcole@lemm.ee 7 points 4 months ago

they never deserved a B
