MAGA Reich... although they'd probably view that as a badge of honor.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 71 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yes they'll pay it as soon as they're deported

🤦

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 69 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I bet it's preparation for putting people in camps domestically to "work off their debt".

The US wants more slaves.

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah it's this. Indentured servitude.

[–] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Indentured servitude is what they use the h1b visas for

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 2 points 5 days ago

Yeah, H1B people are closer to indentured servitude as in they can go home. Prisoners are straight up slaves.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

$0.25 per day, pre-tax. No deductions.

[–] Nay@feddit.nl 23 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yeah, wtf?

Unless it'll be used against any family members still here?

[–] Zippygutterslug@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago

Sounds like they're probably going to go nuts with imprisoning debtors, probably both citizens and immigrants, as well as the mentally ill, and use them as forced labor.

Debt is (basically almost always) not transferrable 😊.

Like unless your parents are in debt and have an estate and leave you that estate can you really be in a situation where someone's debt becomes your problem.

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Cosigning loans and the person defaulting or marriage to someone who is in debt

[–] SaltySalamander@fedia.io 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you cosign a loan, you're literally taking on the responsibility of that debt every bit as much as the person actually getting the money. Not really the same thing. Also if you marry someone who already has debt before you guys married, in most states that debt does not become your responsibility after marriage.

Correct. My ex had student loan debt before we got married, and she tried to get me to "help" her with it during our divorce. I'm glad I didn't.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 29 points 1 week ago (4 children)

How do they expect to collect?

[–] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)
[–] Nougat@fedia.io 3 points 6 days ago

You clearly don’t know me.

[–] Carmakazi@lemmy.world 54 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They will seize their house, their car, their bank accounts. Any property they can. Law enforcement in this country has a long history of being literal bandits, this is simply justification.

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 33 points 1 week ago

Huh, that is literally what Germany did. Gross. I did not enjoy saying that.

[–] mesamunefire@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Most "wealth" is digital. And repossessing physical goods is a huge industry.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I would hazard a guess that undocumented people rely much more heavily on cash (though that is just a guess, do correct me if I'm wrong). And they'll take the property whether there's a "fine" levied or not, so I'm just not seeing the point here.

Oh, wait. It's not a logical point, it's a "the base will eat this up" point.

[–] mesamunefire@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

If people are sent over to "pay off their fine to the US"....

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago

Indentured servitude.

[–] mesamunefire@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago

Might be why they want to deport people so much. Their wealth isn't going to seize itself.

[–] Bellingdog@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

I'm shocked it wasn't $14.88, the My Pillow Rate.

[–] besselj@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

So that's how they're paying to detain people in El Salvador? The US is paying El Salvador $6 million per year to illegally detain immigrants indefinitely

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Same for the eandom citizens they are also telling to leave?

[–] Pandemanium@lemm.ee 1 points 6 days ago

Maybe that's the point. Citizens aren't going to deport themselves, so it's just a really random extortion racket. Or maybe it's not random, but so far it's unclear whether all the people receiving those letters have anything in common.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

$1000 a day must be some sort of line they cannot cross without the courts or congress involved--and they're actually staying under it?
