He's not even mayor yet but he's already cleaning up the city

Good. Leave. They were driving up local real estate prices.

Even now, Generalissimo 安迪• Cuo-Mo flees for Little Saint James Island (新台湾), given to him by good friend Jeffery Epstein, to regroup, impose martial law and seek foreign aid. The Red Sox Army must press the attack end this threat once and for all. Our forces did not endure the Long Island March to relent here.

Edit: forgot Red Sox weren't New York. Dammit

I undergo a sort of existential crisis when I see things like this. I'm hit with all kinds of different emotions and feelings when I'm forced to confront the fact that some of these rich fucks genuinely truly believe the propaganda they receive about socialists. Among them are rubes so truly poisoned by propaganda that they think they need to flee the city to escape impending socialist executions or some shit.

It's very difficult to accept that people with enormous wealth are this stupid. It makes me question reality in a way that's very difficult to describe. Their interpretation of the world is genuinely like an alien thing.

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago

I mean, how many of them took a look at a fiberglass submarine controlled by a Logitech controller and went "yes this is a good idea"?

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 32 points 1 day ago

I justify it by telling myself that these people didn't get rich themselves, they are rich because they had rich parents/grandparents. They are the failson generation, their parents knew the propaganda was to keep the poors in line, but they don't.

I also reaffirm my belief in socialism when I see shit like this. This is the "cream of the crop" of capitalism, these people are who capital elevates to the top. The worst, dumbest, most entitled people you could imagine. There's no way a system like that could survive forever. It's still around because of societal inertia, but I honestly don't know if capitalism as it currently exists will survive till the end of the century, the way things are going.

They are stupid, but I think reactions like this from the wealthy are mostly to signal dissatisfaction to policy makers

It's similar to when business owners complain that raising wages will force them to fire people. They're used to getting deregulation by bitching about government oversight.

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago

if the rent freezes, the projected value of property drops, forcing the overleveraged jokers to sell thus dereasing prices even further. They are getting ahead of the train shrug-outta-hecks

the logic is sound, if you are overleveraged dipshit who can't take imagined wealth drop for 5 years

Something I have to remind myself of and becomes more true to me directly as time goes on is that many rich successful people are not fucking smart at all and that the veil of meritocracy that US culture promotes is purposeful to the point of hiding how not smart the rich are.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It's a mind fuck because I can logically understand it... I already knew it. But my head does not want to believe it having been brought up with every single socially imprinted expectation being to the contrary.

And that's not just a disbelief in rich people being stupid, because that's an obvious given. But in the fact that they would be so deeply and utterly poisoned by propaganda that they would consider this mayor to be powerful enough to be a physical threat to them that they must run from... That's the disbelief I'm struggling with here. Because it requires being incredibly detached from reality to think that. A level of detachment that is hard to imagine.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

A part of it as well might be ease of "running" for them. For a regular person, uprooting your whole life and moving somewhere else is a huge affair, but for them, they just have to sell their apartment in NYC and stay in their holiday home in the Hamptons until they find a nice fancy place somewhere else to buy. None of the moving will be done by them, none of the actual stress and effort of moving affects them directly, so it probably isn't as daunting to them as it would be to an ordinary person.

[–] Lavender@hexbear.net 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm glad they're scared, but it is strange to witness in real time.

We're not bringing out the Central Park Guillotine with this primary win, but they legit believe that they can't safely live in New York anymore. Like they don't have layers upon layers of social protections to insulate them from their consequences.

I mean it makes sense the way they regard homelessness, but to see them buying all of these lies wholeheartedly. To be that out of touch with reality.

I still see them as evil more than foolish, but damn what a waste of the time and resources at their disposal. What an utter lack of curiosity. They could've gotten the best education in the world to leverage their power in the most effortless ways, but they see a mayor winning a primary and they're heading for the hills.

This is a win, but still. Weird.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

They think the poor are going to rise up and abuse them, because that's what they've done with their power. Now that they are about to lose their power, they assume the new power holders will treat them the same way they treated others. They think everyone else is as evil as they are.

I think I've explained this once but a small time capitalist that is a friend of the family (they own a small factory) and these freaks genuinely believe governments should be run like corporations. It's incredibly funny and sad how dumb these people are.

Fascism. They don't realise they're advocating for fascism but they are.

[–] WaterBowlSlime@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 1 day ago

I thought it was about divesting from an area that will become less profitable. Leave before you get taxed, fined, or dispossessed. It happens all the time on a country level.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 58 points 1 day ago (2 children)

porky-scared-flipped: “How could you poors! Me and the boys at the country club have been talking, and we’re running away!”

So your protest to Mamdani’s efforts to make the city more affordable is…to abandon all that infrastructure? Thus lowering demand, increasing available supply and therefore lowering prices?

Yeah, way to punish the poors, piggo.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 53 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The grocery stores talking about moving shop was the funniest shit. Ok so like, you're just gonna imminent domain.... Yourselves? Cool, just hand over the real estate we need to set up these community run grocers? Fuck maybe the revolution could be peaceful after all! (obviously I know this not to be true).

[–] jack@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

If we can convince the bougies that the revolution is underway, they'll all just piss themselves and flee the country

this doesn't matter. this type of "news article" is akin to articles about liberals fleeing to Canada. Few people will actually move.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He asks "can we afford to not be homeless" and hes seen as a bigger threat than the parties that carry out fascist laws, enforce genocide and incredibly destructive wars. you can't tell me this isn't a completely broken society.

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Even my "vote blue no matter who" lib coworkers are starting to realize how fucked the establishment is. Dems are really shooting themselves in the foot here (again).

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

Walz saying "we're not going back" lol for your sakes you better hope you do go back because shit will get real ugly.

What, are you implying that a Murdoch-owned rag might be less than trustworthy?

[–] DornerStan@lemmygrad.ml 20 points 1 day ago

fr like what exactly is supposed to be the mechanism by which this "fact" is sourced? Did multiple real estate brokers all call journalists because of how many calls they were getting?? Did the rich people call journalists to tell them they were calling real estate brokers?? Are journalists specifically calling real estate brokers to track their call volume and the demographics of their callers?????

Absolute fucking nonsense

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 51 points 1 day ago

smuglord Oh you want affordable housing? How about I just free up my house and discourage luxury development? How about I just bankrupt all of those luxury grocers so there's a bunch of empty buildings with the infrastructure to start your own? Yeah bub, I'm even going to register elsewhere as a voter.
