Who is top right on the left panel?

[–] Sam@hexbear.net 39 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Matthew Broderick, he was driving on the wrong side of the road in Northern Ireland and smashed right into another car, killing Anna Gallagher, 28, and her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63. He was fined $175. He continues to have a holiday home in Donegal that he uses frequently and has refused to meet with the family of the people he killed. He claims to have no memory of the crash.

Dang. What financial milestone does one have to pass for “I have no recollection of the crash” to be an alibi and not an indictment

Somewhere between "South Dakota Attorney General" and "that dude that was in Wargames and the 1990s Godzilla remake"

Christ, I forgot about that villain

[–] JoeyJoeJoeJr@lemmy.ml 4 points 9 months ago

I have no insight into this specific event, and won't bother looking it up, but "no memory" here might not be like someone would say in a deposition to blow off a question - it might be that he was also injured in the crash, and legitimately has no recollection of the event.

they were on the boat the night natalie wood died. scuttlebutt has always been something nefarious, but nothing definitive. maybe it was an accident or a classic hollywood "clean up job" for an established actor (wagner) and a rising talent (walken).

her death coincided with the beginning of the "summer blockbuster" era for the big studios and a departure from banking on stars, so there's a better than average chance her death was just an accident and gossip reporters were merely overlaying their assumptions about past clean ups, of which there were several, onto the current story.

Why is Alec Baldwin in this photo?

[–] Yllych@hexbear.net 23 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Because Baldwin killed his own cinematographer, due to his wanting to hire scabs for his film production and the resulting breakdown of basic safety protocol on his set.

You can find anecdotes about the whole production of course, but the most egregious was obviously production hiring a newbie for 2 roles that should always be split up - armourer and prop master.

If I remember correctly, Baldwin was not only a producer on the film, but also the owner of the production company. Even still in this shit-hole capital world, when you hire someone you are responsible for making sure they are competent, especially when handling firearms is integral to their duties.

This is supposed to be part of the often crowed risk capitalists take when they get to exploit others for profit. But Baldwin and co. did not ensure competency, booted all competent IATSE members off site, and Halyna Hutchins died shortly after in the pursuit of capital's monstrous bloody profits. Now Baldwin gets to totally shirk the risk off to his unqualified hire and whoever else deemed a good target.

Baldwin is an example of a social murderer. Usually the victims are far removed from the glass offices these types mostly live in, but in Baldwin's case she was right in front of him.

If you ask me, the focus mostly on Baldwin is unfortunate, because the whole group of producers should potentially be facing jail time.

He shot someone on set. It was apparently an accident so I guess it would technically be manslaughter, but he was also a producer on the film that didn't use union labour and had a slapdash, armourer whose fuck up also led to the shooting.

John Wilkes Booth was the younger brother of a more famous actor, Edwin Booth. It would be like if Casey Affleck killed the president.

In November 1981 Reagan signed National Security Directive 17, which allowed covert support to anti-Sandinista forces. The U.S. government armed, trained and funded the Contras, a group of rebel fighters based in Honduras, in an attempt to overthrow the Nicaraguan government. As part of the training, the CIA distributed a detailed manual entitled "Psychological Operations in Guerrilla War", which instructed the Contras, among other things, on how to blow up public buildings, to assassinate judges, to create martyrs, and to blackmail ordinary citizens.] In addition to backing the Contras, the U.S. government also blew up bridges and mined harbors, causing the damaging of at least seven merchant ships and blowing up numerous Nicaraguan fishing boats. They also attacked Corinto harbour on October 10, 1983, causing 112 wounded according to the Nicaraguan government. After the Boland Amendment, passed in 1982, made it illegal for the U.S. government to provide funding for Contra activities, Reagan's administration secretly sold arms to the Iranian government to fund a secret U.S. government apparatus that continued illegally to fund the Contras, in what became known as the Iran–Contra affair. The U.S. continued to arm and train the Contras even after the Sandinista government of Nicaragua won the elections of 1984.

His administration initially brushed off the AIDS epidemic and hindered the CDC and NIH response. People directly under him called it God's punishment against homosexuality. Over 80,000 Americans died from AIDS in the 80s. As of 2018, about 700,000 people have died of HIV/AIDS in the United States since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and nearly 13,000 people with AIDS in the United States die each year.

He bombed Libya, killing 15 civilians.

This is hardly exhaustive. His policies as California governor and POTUS upended social programs, increased crime, poverty, childhood malnutrition.
