Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

Of course. That's why it's called KDE Plasma and not KDE Liquid or KDE Gaseous

If Lemmy had awards, you would deserve one

i reposted this comment to !bestoflemmy@lemmy.world. You're welcome.

    [–] muhyb@programming.dev 13 points 8 months ago (1 children)

To be fair, I still have this Lemmy award idea, with a twist. The pay goes to awardee's preferred open-source project as donation.

    [–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 13 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Half of it split between the instances of the awarder and awardee, the other half as you said.

    [–] muhyb@programming.dev 6 points 8 months ago

    That would be even better!

    [–] rtxn@lemmy.world 30 points 8 months ago

Still waiting for the KDE Neutron Degenerate Matter release.

    [–] _cryptagion@anarchist.nexus 80 points 8 months ago (2 children)

yes, but have you successfully achieved fusion in the CPU? if so, this will revolutionize selfhosting.

    [–] fartographer@lemmy.world 40 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Trying to mine some Ethereum and accidentally ending up with with a shit-ton of hydrogen burning into helium

    [–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 17 points 8 months ago

Great, now my electron wallet doesn't want to work anymore. Said something about "busy influencing the fusion rate" and "please wait while I maintain the overall electrical neutrality within the plasma" or somesuch

So it runs on Java? πŸ€”

At least swap usage is low.

Okay hear me out, we got nuclear fusion, now place some water in a massive tub on top of the pc.
    Create steam
    Spin turbines
    Generate electricity
    Send to another server
    Infinate power

Ackshually this is well within the range of a Class F star, unlike our class G sun which is a bit cooler. This is getting cloe to the temperature of Procyon A which is noticeably whiter than the sun.

    [–] rumba@lemmy.zip 27 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (2 children)

    I have the opposite problem.

    [–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 18 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

Maybe your server could help cool off theirs.

    [–] Madison420@lemmy.world 16 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Take both of them and slap a sterling engine between them. Unless both servers combined are eating thousands of watts an hour you could end up net energy positive.... Or you know perpetual energy.

    [–] rumba@lemmy.zip 4 points 8 months ago

And that last 0.5 was probably a rounding error It's not showing double digit precision. :)

    [–] communism@lemmy.ml 24 points 8 months ago (1 children)

So I was curious and looked it up because I would have assumed that stars/suns are much hotter than that.

    https://www.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/article/110323-coldest-star-discovered-cup-coffee-brown-dwarf-hawaii-space-science

Turns out the coldest star is 97Β°C at its surface. So I guess CPUs regularly reach (coldest) star temperature?

    [–] DreamlandLividity@lemmy.world 9 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

I guess technically. This makes me wonder what actually qualify as stars. Do neutron stars? Do black holes?

UPDATE: By the definitions on wikipedia, miriam-webster dictionary and britanica, a brown dwarf this cold may not actually qualify to be a star. I will search further for astronomical definition.

    [–] rtxn@lemmy.world 6 points 8 months ago

Brown dwarfs are classified as substellar objects because they can't fuse hydrogen into helium and don't undergo the same lifecycle as stars. White dwarfs aren't stars either, they are stellar remnants that don't have enough mass to keep fusing heavier elements, usually stopping at carbon and oxygen.

Congratulations to you and the motherboard.

Reapply thermal paste every 24h. It'll be fine.

Time to build a small Dyson Sphere.

I'm more triggered by the missing degree symbol Β° before C

    [–] Agent641@lemmy.world 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

It's actually travelling at 6280 x the speed of light 😬

    [–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

That would be lower case. It's actually charged with 6280 Coulombs.

My Dell optiplex reports 126C, is this really normal dell behavior?

Wow you did it! How much data to hit critical mass?

    [–] Marzanna@scribe.disroot.org 8 points 8 months ago

    …and converted to UltraSPARC?

    [–] ndupont@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 8 months ago

    Can't touch this

    [–] socsa@piefed.social 7 points 8 months ago (1 children)

It's because you have swap enabled and the server would rather just die in a fire.

    [–] july@leminal.space 2 points 8 months ago

    Happy cake day

    [–] cute_noker@feddit.dk 3 points 8 months ago

    Try to touch it

    [–] Zen_Shinobi@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

A weapon to surpass Metal Gear?!

    The server:
