Some people see the world as a giant game of sports ball where our duty is to compete with each other rather than collaborate. In the cases where this is done out of genuine ignorance rather than bigotry, I rarely see it result in anything less toxic than chauvinism. Actually no, not rarely. Never.
In my experience, these are the people who consider themselves Patriots and make a big deal out of their distinction between Patriotism and Nationalism.
They are also extremely frustrating to talk to.
