Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Who knew that the vast majority of internet services depending upon one thing en masse was a bad idea.

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 25 points 2 months ago

Yeah, it's terrible. I'm so glad that Nadeko uses a self-hosted anti-bot solution.

It's terrible that app.element.io and mini.p2pool.observer are broken because of Cloudflare, when they're associated with self-hosted independent open source software.

That's incredible

Second mass outage in less than a month. this-is-fine

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 42 points 2 months ago (4 children)

Way too much of the internet depends on Cloudflare, companies should really diversify the bot protection game.

[–] Gorillatactics@hexbear.net 32 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I feel like programmers have just gotten bad. Everything works worse than it used to even with better hardware.

[–] Frigg@hexbear.net 70 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This might be controversial, but personally I blame capitalism.

[–] CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de 26 points 2 months ago (2 children)

There’s no business reason to improve X. It runs on the customer’s device so we don’t really stand to benefit from making it more efficient.

Etc.

Shareholders-first thinking is an absolute cancer in our economy.

we need to seize the means of production under a market economy. seriously!

I got shitlisted by cloudflare because I had a browser tab misbehaving that was infinitely reloading twitter once for god knows how long before I realized it.

I was blocked from like 99% of the internet for like 2 weeks. I couldn't order food, I couldn't visit any goddamn website pretty much, anything that required "human verification" blocked me instantly. it was a fucking nightmare.

and there is NO ONE you can reach out to either. they simply do not offer any path to speak to someone or submit a ticket or anything. you're just insta-banned from the internet.

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago

You already can pick a competitor.

[–] into_highest_invite@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

cloudflare offers more things for free than anyone else can because they're feds lol

Matthew: Back in 2003, Lee Holloway and I started Project Honey Pot as an open-source project to track online fraud and abuse. The Project allowed anyone with a website to install a piece of code and track hackers and spammers.

We ran it as a hobby and didn't think much about it until, in 2008, the Department of Homeland Security called and said, "Do you have any idea how valuable the data you have is?" That started us thinking about how we could effectively deploy the data from Project Honey Pot, as well as other sources, in order to protect websites online. That turned into the initial impetus for CloudFlare.

ohnoes Sorry, I should have given them a heads up before launching my new site with thousands of dprk-soldier today

Critical support to Cloudflare for stopping me from doomscrolling o7

twitter is down so the world is perfect for now

honestly idk what to expect from muskrat but i'm shocked he relies on cloudflare

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 18 points 2 months ago (1 children)

honestly idk what to expect from muskrat but i’m shocked he relies on cloudflare

cloudflare is way bigger than twitter itself

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago

Cloudflare is ginormous, and when it works they provide some of the best stuff at really competitive prices.

[–] goferking0 11 points 2 months ago

Keeping me from looking at slop posts cause the instance linked too are behind cloudflare lol

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 39 points 2 months ago

I love the decentralized internet! So resilient!

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 38 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

more like clownflare

fedcobin and mr are both behind cloudflare, while counterpunch isn't, really makes you think.

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 31 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Haha internet users. My books dont need cloudflare

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 30 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Cloudflare currently operating like an infantry squad engaging in bounding overwatch.

[–] juniper@hexbear.net 16 points 2 months ago

bounding overwatch

i will add this to the list of wikipedia pages i read while i poo at work today thank you

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 29 points 2 months ago (1 children)

So much stuff is down. Basically all of the piracy streaming sites use Cloudflare and as a result are completely broken. The Cloudflare dashboards and API's are broken, so I can't access or do anything with my domains on Cloudflare, or with the Cloudflare workers or Storage.

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 26 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Very thankful that many of the most important things use their own anti-bot systems, instead of depending on Cloudflare. Invidious and Google stuff works just fine, a lot of the privacy-focused open-source software still works. So glad for the people that don't like Cloudflare for worry of exactly this kind of thing happening.

[–] TrashGoblin@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

Anna's Archive just recently moved from Cloudflare to something else, good choice on their part.

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 26 points 2 months ago

Lol fuck the internet

Wait a minute WAIT WAIT AAA-oooaaaaaaauhhh

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 25 points 2 months ago (2 children)

i almost paid for a game because i couldn't get on 1337x 😔

[–] SwitchyandWitchy@hexbear.net 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Stay strong sister.

Can you find it on knabben or another torrent search engine?

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

1337x came back right before i was really thinking of buying it lol

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I kinda want to pay for EU5 but fuck i don't have 85 dollars right now for their stupid dlc pass shit but the piracy site i use doesn't have v1.05

[–] kleeon@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

but the piracy site i use doesn't have v1.05

Good. That patch completely broke a bunch of shit. There is now a 1.0.6 hotfix which addressed some of these issues

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah but it added tin RGOs to mesoamerica and I'm really sick of trying to fine tune my stone extraction and stone tool economy as Cocom

[–] kleeon@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

They made a lot of good changes but broke trade in the process. Wait for 1.0.6 to come out on torrents

[–] tombruzzo@hexbear.net 20 points 2 months ago

I knew something was up. This just stopped me from playing Niota, a game installed on MY COMPUTER, because I was using the itch launcher.

This is probably another case of code being written by AI. We thought AI would ruin the internet by filling it with slop. Instead it's killing itself with shitty code deployments like a toddler left unattended with the bottles under the sink.

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 16 points 2 months ago
[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 14 points 2 months ago

Another thing that should be nationalised, in this case by an international governing body though.

[–] Lerios@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

squidward-chill cloudfare is down

NOOOOO AO3 is down

[–] CTHlurker@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

World of Warcraft somehow still going while League of Legends goes down is amusing to me.

[–] whatdoiputhere12@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

it's currently a yo-yo, website back up, and then down

[–] gramxi@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago
[–] whatdoiputhere12@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

According to status, the issue has been identified and a fix is coming

nevermind it was about warp access

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago

It took quite a while to get to that point, like more than an hour and a half from the start of the issues

[–] PoY@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 2 months ago

warp is a piece of shit in a league of its own

[–] Mousy@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

Huh i guess that's why sponsorblock isn't working.

[–] PoY@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 2 months ago

fucking good.. maybe this will wake some people up to realize this isn't how the internet is supposed to work. everyone being behind 1 host is just stupid
