Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

People will compete for those negative awards to get famous.

Source: look at the fucking internet.

We have big brother awards in Germany. Won among others by Google and Tiktok this year.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 14 points 5 days ago (1 children)

There used to be a "The 50 Worst People of the Year" series of popular / notorious articles in the 2000's. They were pretty savage, wickedly amusing, and tended to target Americans more than not. Not sure whatever happened to that series, but it's beyond necessary in these dark times...

[–] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Someone on the list probably bought the media company behind it and shut that shit down with the quickness. Speculation of course.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Makes sense to me, not unlike regulatory capture.

It really was a striking project that only should have grown in impact & awareness over the years, especially with the Bush Jr regime being such a disaster at the time.

I've often thought about how society might be different if every year or so, we all voted on who was the worst person in the world, and then executed them. Similarly, voting for the worst company in the world and then dissolving it entirely, with executives and board members imprisoned. The absolute worst individuals and companies would have significant societal pressure to avoid being monsters. It wouldn't even matter if everything they did was legal, it's just a matter of public opinion.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 3 points 4 days ago

Eventually. we reach a point where we are executing good people, because they are not wuite good enough.

In theory, in practice, there's always garbage people, and this would work.

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, that’ll teach them.

Hell some of them will be more encouraged.

When I was a kid, each wing of the school was for a different grade. And once a month, the school would punish the wing that was the filthiest by publicly announcing it on the speakers.

So kids would go out of their way to sabotage other wings. It really backfired when one wing was proud to be the filthiest, and would actively destroy their side of their school the day before the announcement. And when they were called out, you can hear the cheering.

Fully agreed

It's time we put the words assholes in the spotlight

We have the Razzie awards too to counter the Oscars, so left have awards for the pedophiles, the war mongerers, the mentally deficient with money, the most vile beings

Trump, of course, would win first prize in just about all categories to start, but y'know, there is room for others

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 2 points 4 days ago

Some people will try to earn the awards, this is the main flaw:

Perverse incentives.

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

You think Trump is worse than Netanyahu? Openly corrupt and ruling a fascist religious ethno-supremacist terrorist state that openly talks about eliminating the native population, celebrates raping prisoners, shoots children in the knee for sport, and actively committing a livestreamed genocide with your tax dollars?

Expand your bubble, homie, Trump is a symptom not the disease.

[–] DaMummy@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago (3 children)

There is. You have things like "Antisemite of the Year" "Jerk of the Year" "Nobel Peace Prize" "Worst Games of the Year"

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 25 points 5 days ago (1 children)
[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago

Did you see how the ceremony went? Trump just grabbed the award like he was the grinch stealing a present. Then he put the thing on his own neck, and stood there like a dork.

"Look at me! I'm the bestest president ever!"

No. You're a dork, who just created the first ever FIFA whatever award, because you DIDN'T actually win the peace prize anyone actually gives a damn about. You didn't win the real one because you don't know what PEACE means. Peace isn't ramping up agencies who's sole job is to kidnap people off the street. You've done nothing to promote peace in our times. You're not deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize. So now you're standing there like a dork.

Everybody laugh at Trump! Look how embarrassing he looks!!! Hahahahaha!!!!!

Alright, alright. We've had our fun, but I do feel the need to appologize.

........The Grinch is actually a pretty solid guy. He gets undeserved hate. An entire town belittles him, and bullys him for being different. Fuck that town! Stand with Grinch!

What? You thought I was going to appologize to Trump? Fuck off! Fuck Trump!

Those responsible for the Antisemite award deserve other awards themselves. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz, one of the few media outlets there that still retains a spark of humanity, hints at this in the following opinion piece: This Is the 'Crime' That Got Ms. Rachel Nominated for 'Antisemite of the Year'

[–] DaMummy@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

You kinda answered your own question though. It's a matter of opinion. Which is often a badge of honor.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 1 points 4 days ago

...Dumbest person of the year?

[–] Contentedness@lemmy.nz 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ya there really isn't enough negativity in the media these days.

[–] uncouple9831@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Exactly it's all this "yes we're sorry we didn't release the files we promised to release in may and were legally required to release by Friday, but y'all are gonna be cool about it right" and then everyone is cool about it when they should be defunding the fbi send removing bug-eyed scum from authority roles.

Get these softie collaborators out of journalism and bring in people who've got a pair

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Who's cool with it? Even MAGA people started turned on Trump over it.

[–] uncouple9831@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago

I guess I don't see any maga media, but I haven't seen a lot even on lemmy. Maybe 2 articles. Nothing much on the news that I follow.

In contrast I saw the same three steam box articles over and over again, crosspost after crosspost, for like 3 insufferable weeks.

[–] HailSeitan@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

There’s the Shkreli Awards for healthcare profiteering

[–] netvor@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Fun on paper, but... then imagine people generating their theories to justify why, eg. RFK Jr lost to Musk or vice versa.

We should not be talking about why "shithead x is actually not so bad as shithead y", we should be isolating before NASA can actually send BOTH of them to Mars where they belong.

[–] TargaryenTKE@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Exactly what I was gonna say

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Like North Corea wins sixth year in a row style?

Or for westeners only?

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

North Korea deserves it, but they won't win it. North Koreans will all vote for the USA, while Americans will be split on voting for themselves and other countries.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Yeah it's kind of a stupid idea to select bad people by popular vote. They will select the most unliked person, say donald trump (he's bad but putin have had millions killed and so on), not the actual worst person.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

There's the Darwin awards but those are a little mean spirited as most win them by dying

[–] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Most? Dying is a mandatory requirement.

[–] CXORA@aussie.zone 6 points 4 days ago

Only being removed from the genepool actually!

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

No, occasionally people win the award just by becoming sterile

[–] BarbecueCowboy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I like it, but awards are mostly barely disguised advertising campaigns. I can see why negative ones are rare.

[–] DSN9@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

What about an awards system built on top of the fediverse. To win the awards, most comments from country X or something like that. Instead of advertising, it acts as a hook for people to join the fediverse.

The worlds 5 shittiest countries. Top award countries:

Who killed the most people? Russia lost 1.3m of their sent to a pointless war and killed a few hundred thousand Ukrainians, also committed countless human rights abises

Best dictatorships who live well and fuck everyone else over? Maduro?

Shittiest reputation for being wreckless and stupid? USA?

Most underhanded and likely to commit next mass genocide? China (here's looking at you Mao- 65 million killed some estimates topping out at 150m, impressive)

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The Ig Nobel Prize? It's negative but in a good way.

[–] stelelor@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 days ago

It's not as much a negative award as it is a funny award. The winners do real research and continue meaningfully to science.

I'd like to see an "Andrew Wakefield-Monsanto" award for intentionally bad science.
