Yes, he knows his name and he comes running.

He also knows the dogs name, and the dog knows his name. Can't possibly miss out on any treats the other one might be getting.

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 39 points 1 month ago

My cats only come running when they hear the other cat's name get called. They only respond to FOMO.

[–] Cyv_@lemmy.blahaj.zone 59 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Cheddar Biscuit has a lot of nicknames. Mr Biscuit. Lord Cheddington von Biscuit shorts. Little Baby Biscuit Boy. Master Biscuits. Cheds. Little Lad. Just a guy. Simply a fella.

We have options :3

[–] TheFunkyMonk@lemmy.world 30 points 1 month ago

I call my cat by his name (and sing songs with his name substituted into the lyrics) all the time.

He’s deaf.

[–] remon@ani.social 29 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I usually call him by criminal terms. Gangster, crook, thief, robber, vandal and such.

[–] toomanypancakes@piefed.world 25 points 1 month ago

Absolutely, among other names. She's usually Margot, sometimes Meemers, Marmar, or Margalos, and sometimes she's Stop Screaming.

[–] DCErik@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Miso gets called 'Miso', but also 'Mimis', 'Mrs. So', 'Jennifer Mimiston', 'Miso the Lioma', and 'Mi'.

[–] surfrock66@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago

Mittens certainly thinks her name is "Pss pss pss"

[–] lgmjon64@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

When she's in trouble. So most of the time. Otherwise instead of Moonbeam it's missy-moo, cat, moo-moo, missy, miss kitty, or monster.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

Only Elliot because he knows his name and runs over when you call him. Sometimes he goes by "not my cat" when I'm looking for my cat and he shows up. (He is my partner's cat)

Sully knows her name but dgaf and only reacts when she's in trouble and I bring out the big guns (Sullivan). She's usually just "my little girl" or "my little angel" otherwise.

No I don't have a favourite why do you ask

[–] Chee_Koala@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago

Yes, all the time. One reacts to it like a dog would react to their name, and will even move toward you to see why they were called. The other one never really reacts different, just facing them and making a noise gives the same reaction., name or no name.

[–] Vinny_93@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago

I frequently add 'cat' to the name, so Zola becomes Zolacat, Dora is DoraCat and Bella is BellaCat or the BellaMonster

[–] Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

My cat is named Loki, and it suits him perfectly cause he's a bit of a fuckhead🤣

He only answers to "Mr. Kitty," and you have to say it like "Meeewster Kitty" or he will completely ignore you.

[–] CarbonatedPastaSauce@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

he’s a bit of a fuckhead

But you'd already said "my cat"...

I call my cat by his name, "buddy", or just "cat" sometimes.

Never "my son"
Ever

[–] DriftingLynx@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago

One of mine is officially Sparkles, but he get called Floofy Doofkins, Sparkle Bear, Spark, Lazy Lion, Lounging Lion, Shitty Kitty, and Pretty Kitty.

He knows all of them.

His sister is Ember, but we call her Tiny Tiger too. She responds to neither 😂

[–] gigastasio@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 month ago

Yes, I absolutely do address her by her proper name, but only when I’m addressing her in song.

[–] pressedhams@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Kahn gets boy cat, Kahn coy Kahn, and kitten

Minh gets kitten and spiteful bitch. She hates everyone and makes sure that dogs and cats alike always have food and water with her judgmental Meow and death stare. Don’t you dare touch her though.

When we had several, I tended to use the name only to distinguish them; otherwise, they were all simply "cat".

[–] Suck_on_my_Presence@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Booker gets yelled at a lot so he very much knows his name well. He also knows Book or BookBookBookBook.

Hollow on the other hand does get called by his name, but he couldn't care less. They both do get called several nicknames as well.

[–] robocall@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Yes. All the time. She doesn't care but I still call her.

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Yes, having multiple cats, they clearly understand their name.

[–] hogmomma@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

I'm not good with nicknames. I call mine either "boy," "my boy," "squishy," "swishy," "lovey." My wife calls him "perfect angel baby." She's better at nicknames than I am. 🙂

[–] cosmictrickster@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Monty is “the boy”, “little man”, or “mun bruv”.

Okie is “little miss”.

[–] AlexLost@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

100% I also have a lot of nicknames for the lil bastard.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I call mine 貓貓 (maau¹ maau¹)

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 month ago

They only get called by their names when they're in trouble. Otherwise Laszlo becomes "Zozo" (sometimes "Cinnamon Bear") and Pica becomes "Lala" (sometimes "Fluffy Ninja").

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sometimes, but usually I have nickmames for them, so Maggie is Maggs, Maggles, Magalicious, Maggalopolis, Maggapotamous, and my favorite name for her, Mama Bear.

well yes but she's also mommy's good girl and also mommy's happy cat

[–] LeapSecond@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 month ago

I don't think I've ever called a cat by its name. Depending on what they're doing it's either "hey", "pspsps", or snapping fingers. I don't think the cats care either. But names are useful when talking to other humans like "Muffin picked a fight with Potato yesterday. Potato won"

[–] richie_golds@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

My cat’s name is Spooky, but he gets called Spucky, Sporky, and Scoopy, all originally mispronunciations of his name that we found amusing. We also call him Cat, Mr. Cat, Kitty, Mr. Kitty, and occasionally Feline.

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 5 points 1 month ago

I have "fat fuck" and "sheit for brains". Love them to bits.

[–] Krompus@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Lubochka / Lulu / Bochka / Bobo / Booboo / Baby / BB

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Nope. I rarely call Trouble by her full name but Princess Peanut Trouble Sparkle knows when she fucked up. Her sister has a name but shows up to "Honey". Their older brother has only ever used "Dmitri" at the vet and is "hey old man" at home.

[–] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago

I usually just shonen anime fight scene scream 'caaaAAAaaat' from accross the room to get their attention.

Yes, and they both know their names and come when called. If they feel like it or are hungry.

[–] STUNT_GRANNY@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

My housemates have an odd mix of nicknames for their cats. One of them has a shortened name, two of them tend to get extra syllables added to their names, and the last one, Goku, is just Goku.

I usually can't keep all their names straight, so when one of them bugs me, I tend to just point at it and say "...cat".

[–] sparkles@piefed.zip 4 points 1 month ago

I lived with a cat, her name was Lilith. I just called her “cat” or “kitty, meoooowwww” and she came to those.

[–] AmosBurton_ThatGuy@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

My cats name is Chanelle, but I rarely call her that. Her nickname is kitty cat ribs the 2nd, but I usually call her either kitty or ribs. Back story behind the nickname is my best friend had a cat when we were kids, and when he'd annoy him he'd threaten to cook him up like a rack of baby back ribs, so we started calling him kitty cat ribs.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 4 points 1 month ago

I will often call her name, Triscuit, but also lovingly call her 'fuzzy girl' all the time.
