Overview:

The community dedicated to boycotting the US until they stop fascism, restore full democracy and start following international law.

Americans have a moral obligation to resist Donald Trump and project 2025 at every turn.

America is a flawed democracy currently being ruled by oligarchs. Stop the backslide! Dont let America become the next Hungary.

America needs to challenge the court rulings of citizens united v. fec and shelby county v. holder, protect the media, implement independent district drawing, and the single transferable vote so they don't end up having people stay home in life-changing elections because they cannot vote for their favourite candidate.

Wild to see this fervor after a white woman was killed, this is like the fourth or fifth time ICE has murdered someone in a year but now our "worst fears have been realized." They certainly weren't an anti-civilian paramilitary when they were fucking raiding American ghettos with helicopters and kidnapping people in unmarked vans off the streets. We don't care about that, obviously, but now they've crossed a line!

This country fucking sucks.

If that's what it takes then I'll take it.

His policies have killed millions. Stories of white women being brutalized have always pulled at Americans heart strings. We better learn to use it to our advantage, for the sake of everyone.

this is like the fourth or fifth time ICE has murdered See, I didn't even know about this and I like to think I follow US news quite closely. I must have missed it or my brain shorted out because of the constant flood of awful news coming out of that country.

More that 30 people have died in concentration camps as well.

When are the people going to fight back?

[–] meep_launcher@sh.itjust.works 51 points 2 weeks ago (9 children)

I'm copying and pasting from another thread I posted in just a few hours ago on basically the same thing.

If you're wanting a good faith explanation:

The folks who own guns are almost all conservative and live in red states where there is positive sentiment towards ice. The people who are protesting are all left wing and very likely don't own a gun, and bringing a gun to a protest is easily how you make what could be a day of bruises and cuts into a day of bloodshed. I've been to several protests, and the big message is "don't give them any reason to mow down the crowd".

Let's also consider why we don't organize like they do in Paris. You get arrested? Fired from your job. You get fired from your job? There goes your healthcare. There goes your housing. Our resistance is slow, not because we aren't passionate or are too complacent and dumb, it's because the sad fact that sick, starving, and homeless people make for poor resistance, and I doubt anyone wants that fate.

The system we have is against us in ways far more sophisticated than what you deal with in other countries. We are surveilled by are government, controlled by our cops, and sold by our corporations. But we aren't dumb. We aren't weak. We see the hellfire and somehow still go out to do what we can, it's just we are up against the most powerful domestic military force in the world.

Anyway, I gotta go teach children who didn't ask for any of this. I don't know how to keep it together, but somehow they do. If you're in Chicago, I'll see you in the streets next protest.✊

PS: the kids are alright

I cannot stress enough how vital is the work you are doing by teaching kids.

It's paramount that we teach the next generation human values of kindness and solidarity.

They are probably the last generation to learn directly from humans, and not corporate controlled AIs.

Best wishes to you and keep on the good fight!

This is so true. The way I see it, there are two ways to shift the status quo. The less likely one is to build labour power by mass unionizing, thus remove many of those factors that make civil action so costly. The more likely one is for shit to get worse for enough people with nothing to lose that the price of civil action drops to zero for some 20-25% of the population. The world has seen that play out before - during The Great Depression.

Talked to a US coworker today, they are to apathetic to gun violence or any violence that it hasn't registered that the country is sliding into full facism

They‘re the brownshirts given a badge.

[–] orbitz@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago

Hard to have a Night of the Long Knives without them and the administration does enjoy that playbook.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 19 points 2 weeks ago

ICE and the Heritage Foundation are both government sanctioned domestic terrorist organizations.

[–] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They always have been. No need for them to exist, period. I prefer open borders over THIS.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

eyup. I understood having to control a border but if the payment to do it is this. Then let it go be whatever it will be.

The whole DHS has been that since its inception.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

ice has always been anti-immigration paramilitary force for both parties, they hire the exact people that usually hate immigrants in general, otherwise no normal citizens are going to do it, it just that DRUMPF lowered the bar so much that anyone can join.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 12 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

"Queer woman?"

First I've heard that, where did that come from? I've also heard "devout Christian," but that seems to come and go. Probably not a lot of "queer devout Christians" out there.

I'd like to know who she actually was. Her second husband died, so she doesn't seem to be gay, but what to do I know?

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

All this bullshit is irrelevant. They shot one of us. In cold blood. Just for being there when they were carrying out their illegal operations. We are all next.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No, we have to humanize her, that's what makes the normally apathetic wake up. They want to define her as a monster, and dehumanize her, so they can rationalize and excuse murdering her.

We have to remind everybody, especially MAGAs, that she was exactly like them, a mom of 3, a Christian, a widow, etc. When people see that she isn't the monster they claim, they start to realize who the real monsters are.

We have seen over and over that Conservatives will shift their opinion when it hits their own life. Dick Cheney, as conservative as any Fascist Nazi, was extremely gay-friendly because he had a gay daughter whom he loved. He could bomb the shit out of foreign brown people because they aren't real to hom, but he supported gay rights, because gay people were real to him.

When we get MAGAs to see others as fellow humans, it makes a difference to many. Not all, many MAGAs are unsalvageable psychopaths, but some will respond to this. We have to keep whittling away at their approval ratings, and humanizing their victims is an enormous help.

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (7 children)

They want to define her as a monster, and dehumanize her, so they can rationalize and excuse murdering her.

Right... Unfortunately that's why they're calling her queer 😬

I get what you're saying, but that's exactly the opposite of what the media is doing. They are telling the public she wasn't like them. That she wasn't Christian, she was a liberal rioter with three children by two men and her lesbian lover beside her in the car when she was out maliciously running over law enforcement in her SUV. Bootlicking Maga chuds with hot jelly in their skulls don't need much to know a person was evil and deserved to be put down, and so for headlines like this the writers know exactly what they're doing; boiling this woman's entire life into one word that shows she's Not Like Us^TM

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago (14 children)

So... let me make sure I'm understanding you correctly...

You're saying the media outlet called "lgbtq nation" described this woman as queer in order to dehumanize her and show people she isn't like them?

Kinda strange... Who do you think reads lgbtq nation?

Probably not a lot of “queer devout Christians” out there.

Many, many more than you'd think. Plenty of denominations have no problem with queer people. Even the Catholic church has walked back a lot of their anti-queer messaging in the last decade.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

? Where is it coming from that she was queer and what has that to do with anything?

It doesn't matter if she is queer or not, it's completely irrelevant.

If she had been an African American man, or an Asian Transgender woman, it would, should, not have mastered at all, it is just as tragic and it's still murder

Having said that, so yeah, you have a paramilitary organization murdering people in the US. Again, the wording is weird, "anti civilian" is a really weird synonym for murderers, but putting that aside.... What are you going to do about it?

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Are you kidding? If an African American person gets murdered by cops on video, we get nationwide protests and a months-long focus on racial reckoning.

But a white queer person gets murdered by cops on video, and suddenly her queerness doesn't matter and is irrelevant? Murder is murder?

In other words, you're saying "all lives matter" as opposed to "queer lives matter"?

[–] Pelicanen@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 weeks ago (8 children)

In that case, I think it's valid to ask if her being queer influenced the ~~sturmabteilung~~ ICE officer's decision to kill her. There is absolutely discrimination and increased violence from authorities against queer people due to them being queer, but I'm not sure if this is a matter of using disproportionate force against her due to her sexual orientation or if it's just a matter of ICE being violent in general.

Probably the multiple reports describing her wife's reaction to the shooting?

I don't understand why people are getting upset over this particular detail, but it's concerning.
