Ordering caulk via Doordash, is that seriously a normal thing that people do now?

[–] qupada@fedia.io 65 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Honestly, I'd consider it.

If I was in the middle of a job and was about to run out of something, I'm looking at downing tools for a minimum hour round trip to the nearest (decent) hardware store.

There's a good chance someone starting closer to the store can get that down to 35-40 minutes, and I can carry on working in the meantime.

Now "normal", perhaps not, but unreasonable also perhaps not?

In other words, if you're a contractor and the doordasher's fee is lower than your hourly rate.

[–] deHaga@feddit.uk 21 points 1 week ago

Opportunity cost.

[–] zout@fedia.io 14 points 1 week ago

Not necessarily, sometimes you just want to get something finished today, which won't happen if you're sitting in your car. I probably wouldn't do it though.

Even for DIY this might be sensible. I know what my time is worth to me in $. Add in a % correction for semi enjoyable tasks and I have an easy yardstick for what is reasonable.

Have you tried the hummus flavored caulk yet? To die for

[–] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago

I hear it's going places

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago

You mean you... no, it can't be.

I've used it a few times to order lumber because I thought it would be a pain to get everything into my car. Consistently ends up with a guy with the tiniest possible car showing up and me being surprised that a car that small can hold that much wood.

I do usually pad it out with a few other things whenever I make a big order of lumber though, have definitely ordered caulk.

Small cars can do way more than people think. If you put the rear seats down to open the trunk area to the passenger compartment, you can fit a lot of 2X4s and other long items. Having a roof rack helps, too.

Even more so if the small car happens to be a wagon. Like a Kia Soul, Honda Fit, or Subaru Impreza. I had a Kia Soul years ago when I was slinging tires, I could load up a set of big 265s and a set of 215s, with room to spare.

Had to get some caulk for a project recently. Holy shit there are so many different types of caulk. Different colors of caulk. Different sizes of caulk. Specialty caulk that is thick and caulk that is particularly sticky.

I'm not a caulk person but after getting hands-on, I got what I needed.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 week ago (2 children)

And this is exactly why I have SO much closeted caulk, just standing there, getting hard without ever getting released.

[–] MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 week ago

I feel seen.

Title of your sex tape!

sex tape

It's just 24 hours of caulk drying.

And the worst part is the cheap 100% silicone caulk that is useful for 10 billion different things is no longer cheap! Used to be about $1-3/tube and now it’s $6-14/tube.

I used that stuff for everything, especially as an adhesive. Not anymore 😭

Caulk is the new deck. Noted.

Welcome to Macaulay Culkin's Caulk and Caulk Accessories, how may I help you today?

[–] Maiq@piefed.social 11 points 1 week ago

Is the application up high, do they have a man basket? Might need a pair of dykes to pull off the old caulk.

Just the tip

if you just pick "caulk", you get what you get. dude is very considerate. you gotta pick a specific type.

[–] ki9@lemmy.gf4.pw 3 points 1 week ago

My girl worked at a hardware store, and when customers asked for caulk, she'd ask if they wanted black caulk or white caulk. Then she'd say, "I like the white caulk better too," or "So you'll just take whatever caulk you can get your hands on?" or "Yeah, sometimes you gotta have the black caulk,"

[–] Drusas@fedia.io -2 points 1 week ago (3 children)

These two aren't pronounced even close to the same unless you forget that letters in the middle count.

[–] ctry21@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago

Depends where you're from really, and how thick an accent you have. I spent a weekend decorating my first house accidentally talking in nothing but innuendo until it was pointed out to me that I should never go into a DIY shop, obvious gay that I am, and run around asking for cock.

[–] fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I guess you've never heard the aussie/kiwi deck polishing jokes? Accents are a thing.

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

The "L" is very subtle in most American accents and is typically pronounced using the back of the tongue, so it really does sound like "cock" if you're not paying attention to the conversation.

If you're in a construction crew and accentuate the "L" sound specifically to avoid the implication of penis, you can pretty much guarantee the rest of the crew will catch on immediately and flood the conversation with dick jokes just to troll you.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's not the L. Where I'm from, the vowel sounds are different. Cock - like the O in "box". Caulk - like "aw", as in "dawn" (it is worth noting that much of the US has been losing the "aw" sound in that word, so that's probably why I'm the odd one out).

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Valid point, regional pronunciations vary as well.

Still, pretty much everyone who deals with caulk has made a dick joke about it at some point.
