Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

The judge also said they can use the evidence from the seized backpack he was wearing at the time of his arrest

The same backpack that doesn't have a clear chain of custody

So they're kind of burying the fact the federal court is aiming to railroad him

That is a hell of an understatement. But yeah you are right. Hopefully his defense hones in on that detail since they are allowing it. I've been saying he's not the guy from day one.

I'm hoping they can get him off scot-free because this entire thing has been an exercise in police confabulation

Still remember them saying one thing one day, then another thing another day and none of it added up

Fuck the Pigs

scot-free

I too hope the Scottish have nothing to do with it.

anti-italian-discrimination

I couldn't find the Italian Pride emote, must be an oversight

[–] KoboldKomrade@hexbear.net 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Here's hoping the defense fits in enough "reasonable doubt" that the backpack was tampered with.

[–] TrashGoblin@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

The judge probably won't let them.

The same backpack that doesn't have a clear chain of custody

Which means that the defense can use this to undermine the entire case. Might actually be a good thing.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I thought that was removed as evidence after the whole thing about turned off bodycams, bad tracking and so on? Damn, I felt as though the defence were on a winning streak

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago

That's for the NY state charges I think

This is a federal judge determining the federal charges

Which yeah, they're really trying to railroad this kid

He is gonna walk because one of the jurors will be a hero. I feel it

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

12 angry men could use an update

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I still love the idea of a reverse 12 angry men, where the 1 juror convinces everyone else that an innocent guy is guilty, just because he did something annoying to the juror.

Mario Cibaria will finally see his vengeance done!

Italian jokeCibaria is an Italian word for food, and Mangione is a surname that literally means "eats a lot"

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago

Watch them handpick the chuddiest jury possible

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Just punish him with a fine. Like 500 dollars and make him promise not to do it again, like we do for all the big corporations.

[–] redparadise@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Should be fined 1% of his income

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 38 points 2 days ago (2 children)

probably because they know they'd be martyring him

[–] ColonelKataffy@hexbear.net 24 points 2 days ago

:sacco-vanzetti-mangione:

[–] SevenSkalls@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

Maybe the threats of a general strike caused by the martyrs of Renee Good and Alex Pretti actually got them shook.

Probably not but a guy could dream.

if convicted he should receive the medal of awesome.

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 31 points 2 days ago

Mr. Mangione you are hereby convicted of being based and sentenced to a parade in your honor

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 21 points 2 days ago

Lathe: There’s strong evidence he’s innocent but the legal system is choosing to take their sweet time with everything solely to make an example of him. Even if you’re innocent, being associated with anything less than absolute reverence for the porks will cause the system to maximize it’s punishment. So even if he’s innocent he had more than a year of his life wasted.

This is probably just because it's much harder to get a conviction if the death penalty is on the table. A jury would have to think twice about signing of on his death. It'll be much easier to convince them to give him life in prison.

[–] red_giant@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Let him off with a promise not to do it again ;)

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago

"i promise not to kill what's his face again"

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Give him a light sentence at most. Are we really going to destroy this young man's bright future over one small mistake?

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 7 points 2 days ago

Well, that's certain, at least*
