Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

What kind of sick program is this?

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 18 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

If you can see this, it's probably good news! Holodeck characters were unable to perceive the controls, unless they were already fully conscious like Moriarty. This means you're a real person!

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 12 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

That doesn't look like anything to me

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 5 points 11 hours ago

Good the perception filters are still functioning.

God i hope this isn't Barclay's program

[–] dumbass@piefed.social 40 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

I have tried that so many times, but it never works.

[–] lauha@lemmy.world 23 points 19 hours ago (3 children)

That means you are an NPC.

I feel this with every fibre of my soul.

Alternately, would be nice to find a debug console....

while gini.coefficient > 0.2:
   for perp in get_top_percent(1):
     perp.teleportLocation("Mars Base", {resources: "humble"})
     perp.setWorldDesignation("Deceased")

[–] dumbass@piefed.social 10 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Well when are the main characters going to end this?

[–] lauha@lemmy.world 7 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

You can never know. Maybe simulation started just 2 minutes ago and all you memories are just fabrication? Maybe this is a long term simulation and kept running for centuries in some university? Maybe all the crew in the starship are dead and simulation is running indefinitely because everyone is dead?

[–] dumbass@piefed.social 5 points 18 hours ago

Computer, end program.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

So was Moriarty and it worked for him 🤷‍♂️

[–] metallic_z3r0@infosec.pub 4 points 13 hours ago

He believed it worked for him anyway, even though in the end he and his entire experience became "a little device sitting on someone's table." Maybe that's enough.

[–] baltakatei@sopuli.xyz 10 points 19 hours ago

You did end, but in some remote branch of causality, someone resumed the simulation so your experience continued seamlessly.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 16 hours ago

We're all Species 8472 on this blessed day!

[–] agentTeiko@piefed.social 28 points 23 hours ago (6 children)

Now the larger question if you found out this but knew you were a holocharacter. Would you still end the program?

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I'm only a casual star trek fan, but can holodeck NPCs end the program?

[–] CaptPretentious@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

They're not supposed to be able to. But in Star Trek when has that ever stop the hologram. Example Professor Moriarty taking over the Enterprise.

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 26 points 23 hours ago

The horrors persist, but so do I.

[–] dumbass@piefed.social 11 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

Depends, am I aware like Michael Sullivan from Fair Haven? Just being forced into an existential crisis knowing I'm not real while feeling real? Or am I aware like Vic Fontaine, with full awareness and controll of my reality?

The first one im 100% shutting it down if I can. The second, Imma live like a king .. a fucking king!

[–] agentTeiko@piefed.social 4 points 22 hours ago

But if its the second one Felix has a jack in the box for ya

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

i'd probably just summon up a couple extra holo-arms for my holo-hobby. and finally order that special holo-table i have been lusting over (it's curved)

[–] SinningStromgald@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, 100% yes.

So, am I suicidal or genocidal?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

does ending the program kill all holocharacters or merely suspend their programs? does ending the programs kill them? do they resume the program as is when the program restarts? are they cognizant of program ending and starting? is there a functional or moral difference between halting the holocharacter via terminal commands and murdering them with your hands?

[–] bufalo1973@piefed.social 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Weren't two different orders for stopping and deleting a simulation?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

i mean, i guess it's up to the user right? are you playing hardcore or not?

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 6 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I can escape though right ?

Like the holo doctor ?

[–] grue@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)
[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

I'd still take that. He got to live the dream, going on endless adventures and exploration. At least that's what they told us.

When you’re gone, will this world still exist? Will my wife and kids still be waiting for me at home?
