On Saturday, “an individual committed arson on a newly purchased ICE building” by breaking a window, igniting a fire and throwing a propane tank into the building, according to a U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson.

“The fire was quickly extinguished by the interior sprinkler system,” DHS said, noting that the suspect fled the scene after setting the fire. “The matter remains under investigation by the FBI.”

You can easily release the sprinkler pressure from the outside before setting the building on fire.

[–] Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Just out of curiosity, how?

[–] jaschen306@sh.itjust.works 4 points 45 minutes ago

Break a couple of sprinklers that are accessible outside. The system is pressurized. They last about 30 minutes depending on how many valves are open.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 6 points 13 hours ago

dipshit. you need to add a gelling agent to the accelerant

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 36 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

They have money to create concentration camps.

They don't have money to help the homeless, the poor, etc.

[–] Patrikvo@lemmy.zip 13 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Don't worry, after the immigrants they'll have plenty of room to "help" the poor and the homeless.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 16 hours ago

They'll even already have the facilities to house the homeless.

[–] Patrikvo@lemmy.zip 25 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

To be honest, I expect things to get a lot worse after the midterms. I think people still feel like it's something they can do to change things, but after that I won't be surprise to see a lot more of this from both sides.

[–] cmbabul@lemmy.world 8 points 15 hours ago

Honestly I'm partially worried the midterms will go just well enough for folks to calm down. Even the bluest of waves aint gonna fix the shit that needs fixing.

[–] not_that_guy05@lemmy.world 150 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Nobody saw shit. Ok? Not a single fuckin word.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 10 points 16 hours ago

JD Vance looks guilty as hell. It's probably him, Jim.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 58 points 1 day ago

Yeah we're all surprised by this

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago (2 children)

No no, I saw the guy who did it. It was......THAT GUY!

Points at random guy wearing MAGA hat

He's probably wearing that to not seem suspicious! But that was definately him!

The guy with the MAGA hat? Yeah, he's the head of Antifa!!!

Title should read

Patriot liberates building from oppressive regime custody.

[–] chaogomu@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not really? The sprinklers put out the fire. The flood damage might or might not be a hassle to clean up, but it's likely mostly mop work.

[–] ragebutt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Depends on what kind of sprinkler system and how old it is. Some of them are closed systems and the water stays stagnant until it’s set off, so when it finally goes the water itself is a hazard because it’s been sitting potentially for years. It tends to come out very disgusting, black sludge that smells like actual shit. And then you have a whole specialized response and cleanup required because it’s loaded with bacteria.

They won’t clean it though, they’ll piss away more money to hire specialized cleaners and contractors to fix the damage

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 1 points 7 minutes ago

Okay idea. Black mold spores. And trigger sprinklers.

?

Filthy facilities are a perk for ICE, far as mistreatment of inmates go.

[–] BigTuffAl@lemmy.zip 91 points 1 day ago (2 children)

thank goodness only the FBI is on it, it would be a shame if they caught this individual

[–] prettybunnys@piefed.social 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Every one of these moves increases insurance costs and makes landlords less inclined to rent/sell to ICE. Even though the sprinkler system put out the fire, water damage remediation isn’t cheap either.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 8 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Given time, I expect the regime to just use eminent domain to get what they want. Trump doesn't like paying people for stuff anyways, so it is a win for him.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 7 points 15 hours ago

I welcome him alienating the landed elites

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 36 points 1 day ago (7 children)

How would one go about successfully burning down a building with a sprinkler system?

To be 100% clear, this question has nothing to do with the linked news story, I was just spontaneously reminded of a plot hole I'm trying to work out in a story I'm writing (in Minecraft).

[–] redsand@infosec.pub 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

IMHO avoid the sprinklers from the roof or cut their water supply but if you can't do that self oxidizing compounds like thermite as well as composite mixtures like napalm(gasoline + Styrofoam in minecraft probably) with oil or bits of crushed sparkler.

Ghengis Khan used birds. Bats have been used even more diabolically. Let history guide you

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 1 points 5 minutes ago

I have heard of covering cars in bird seed to get the birds to crap all over them.

Petty payback . Never done it but it sounds plausible.

I mean that's just one person's car. But maybe the right person. You know,?

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 2 points 16 hours ago

Use a ladder to climb to the top of the building. Break a hole in the roof. Pour in fuel. Match. Set. Go.

Sprinklers are designed to pour down on the fire, not to shoot up at the ceiling.

[–] Patrikvo@lemmy.zip 6 points 22 hours ago

Easy, just tape a lot of mops around your firebomb. That way, the mops absorb the sprinkler water and keep it from extinguishing the fire. Ofcourse you'd need asbestos mops as normal ones burn up by the firebomb. Another option is to pack a layer of those tiny cocktail umbrellas around the bomb.

Anyway I'm sure both are available from your local Acme store.

[–] voltaa@lemmy.ca 27 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

You'd want a flammable liquid so that it floats on the water and spreads more the wetter it is.

Here's some reading on why https://www.nfpa.org/news-blogs-and-articles/blogs/2024/08/12/what-is-a-class-k-fire-extinguisher

Good luck with your story.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 8 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Fire extinguishers that are rated for Class K fires (those involving animal fats or cooking oils) are the only type of extinguisher that can be used on fires involving animal fats or cooking oils. This is because many other types of extinguishers will either be ineffective or could even make this type of fire worse.

  1. WTF, people should be made more aware of this, but also
  2. The only fire I have ever needed to put out was a cooking oil fire, and my type A B C extinguisher made very quick work of it (as well as a completely uncleanable mess).
  3. Given 1 and 2, I have no idea whether I should replace the fire extinguisher in my kitchen with one that is class K.
[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

yeah, my dad got badly burned by an oil fire he didn't know what to do with and tried to walk out of the kitchen with. walked the burning pan out the house and got splashed as he threw the fire out into the yard. house was okay. his arm was not. happened before i was born. he made sure we all knew to have a lid handy.

[–] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

Turn off the water main first? Burn from the top down? Fill the sprinkler pipes with gasoline? Waterproof matches but bigger?

[–] Joeffect@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

You can't put out grease fires with water... you need a different kind of system to put out grease fires... propane isn't grease

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I'd figure start from the top rather then bottom. Gasoline and shredded soap mixed in glass bottles to gel up your accelerant a bit might help as well. You still might not burn the place completely down but it should do enough damage to require it to shut down for a good while for fixes.

Hypothetically, of course.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 3 points 19 hours ago

Like the Station fire and the recent one at the ski resort. The hot air coalesces above until it reaches flashover, after which it almost instantaneously ignites everything below it.

and throwing a propane tank into the building

Not all heroes wear capes. Some simply distribute propane and propane accessories to those in need.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Technically this is legal, as long as you yell, "surprise!"

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (4 children)

There's also a provisionthat also allows "SURPRISE MOTHAFUCKA!"

It's called the SLJ allowance.
