Backlash is deepening over drivers being ordered to pay hundreds of dollars in fines for infringements incurred by their passengers

What backlash? It has been the law in my country for decades.

Roads are public places and I expect perfect behavior from every driver. The driver has a duty to check and take care of the passengers. If a passenger did that to me, he would get out of the car and walk. I don't want to have a random death on my conscience.

Feel free to downvote, but I believe that half of the drivers should have their license revoked because they suck and are dangerous.

Also it's completely unrelated to AI, that guy fucked around and found out.

You'd think something like a passenger wearing their seat belt under their arm would be a warning rather than such a severe fine for the first offence?

The goal is to make money not improve safety.

WA has last year was the highest number of deaths due to road incidents. Instead of fixing the reason why (increase of size of cars on the roads and just pure sense of self importance that Perth drivers have) they decide to use cameras and ai. But in WA they looove to track their citizens in the urban areas so this really isnt a surprise. Its just affecting a group of people who dont care unless it affects them so its generating some noise. Personally i think we can do without ai cameras unless we have some seriously solid protective legislation in place. And i mean rock solid.

I bet he won't be driving his grand kids without seat belts again.

Sorry, but fines are the only way fucking idiots learn.

A warning and conversation would be the outcome of a police officer, but the computer is inflexible.

It is quite dangerous to wear a shoulder belt in this way, though. I can’t figure out why people think it’s a good idea; child seats are a thing, adjustable belts are a thing.

TFA suggests that being young or neurodivergent is an excuse not to wear the belt, which beggars belief.

A human would have reviewed that photograph, and made the decision to send out a ticket.

This isn't the fault of the machine, this is bad policy.
