Canon is wrong, dragonborn have tails

[-] Primarily0617@kbin.social 81 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

the official canon states that tieflings can't be purple, and yet the official artwork for a tiefling is a purple tiefling

Possibly the most ignored sentence in the PHB, even by Wotc themselves:

Their skin tones cover the full range of human coloration, but also include various shades of red.

[-] Zehzin@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago

Purple is a shade of red, trust me I'm a colorist

[-] mightbejackie@ttrpg.network 9 points 1 year ago

I can do you a few of the most ignored pages in the PHB: I've yet to meet a table that uses Trinkets

[-] termus@beehaw.org 11 points 1 year ago

I had a Tortle Kensei Monk (Ninja Turtle) that had 77 on the trinket table. "A gemstone that looks like a lump of coal when examined by anyone but you." In one of dungeons we were in, I lost it trying to bribe our way out after the BBEG captured us. I was bummed about it ever since, it was my prized possession. Later on in the campaign I came across a genie who asked us to run off or kill the Aboleth that had taken over his home. In return he would grant us a wish. I've never come across a genie ever in my 25 years of playing DND. The group was reluctant to fight it, so I lied and told them we would all get wishes. We defeated the Aboleth and go to ask for wishes. I ask him if we can all have wishes and he shuts that down fast. Before the group can come to a consensus about what to wish for, I blurted out that I wish for my trinket back. Poof, it appeared and now I'm one happy tortle. My companions, not so much.

...i love you; this is why i play RPGs...

[-] Bougie_Birdie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 year ago

Our group likes to roll on that table and then never bring up their trinkets in game. Such a missed opportunity

It counts if you consider every color with some amount of red in it a shade of red

Example: #dcd2f0 (my tiefling's skin color)

Official Dragonborn PHB description say Dragonborns are brown/rust coloured, with some being rust-copper green.

Artwork on the same page is a red scaled dragonborn.

[-] Skua@kbin.social 13 points 1 year ago

The full sentence is "Their small, fine scales are usually brass or bronze in color, sometimes ranging to scarlet, rust, gold, or copper-green." So a red one is kinda like a real life human with ginger hair; uncommon, but not weird. There's also the bit about dragonborn with a particularly strong influence of their draconic ancestor shortly afterwards that says, "These dragonborn often boast scales that more closely match those of their dragon ancestor - bright red, green, blue, or white, lustrous black, or gleaming metallic gold, silver, brass, copper, or bronze."

[-] Kbin_space_program@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

You omitted that the draconic colored scales are from extremely rare and isolated clans.

[-] Skua@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

Rare, yeah, but still a valid possibility. But the main part I wanted to bring up is that the sentence you were referring to actually already includes "scarlet" as an ordinary colour, so the red one in the accompanying picture fits just fine

[-] Blueberrydreamer@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 year ago

Which is exactly the sort of origin that makes a fun character.

[-] Rheios@ttrpg.network 2 points 1 year ago

Or a one note one. But, while I like monstrous races as options, I dislike the trend of 5e to make our characters "special", unique, or noteworthy before the adventuring even begins. (If this is duplicated for some reason, I'm sorry. It tried editing and that didnt' seem to take, then I tried deleting my original message and reposting. Not sure what's up.)

[-] LoamImprovement@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago

Counterpoint - PCs are special and unique by necessity. The vast majority of creatures in whatever world your DM runs do not engage in the adventuring lifestyle. Many are happy to live quiet lives settled in relative comfort and peace. When you create a character, one of the things you need to think about is the impetus that sets them apart from those other people that don't delve into musty old tombs and dank caves looking for trouble - otherwise, as soon as the PC gets their hands on a sizable sum of gold, they don't really have a reason not to split and live like a king with the fortune they've amassed. Additionally, characters with class levels are de facto exemplary, and the intro blurb on each class description that everyone skips over to get to the meat of character creation includes questions that probe why your character is interested in sticking their neck out.

That's not to say that you, personally, can't play Johnny Hayseed, the Human Fighter 1 who signed up to be in the army with all his buddies and has no distinguishing features, traits, or characteristics that set him apart from the average person, but as a good player who facilitates the story the rest of the group is trying to tell, you will need a reason to travel with these weirdos who are all strange and different, and that's going to be the thing that sets your character apart.

[-] Rheios@ttrpg.network 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

No argument save that all of that shouldn't make you exemplary or unique in the way the rules present. It makes you motivated. Frankly even class levels shouldn't make you special because everyone should have them. (The NPC classes of 3.5 fell into this trap to for the Warrior and Adept, imo.)*

Johnny Haysee who had some training in the town guard only to lose his family when his village was murdered by a sudden zombie incursion, who then goes on a vengeance fueled life of adventure to gain the power to fight the necromancer that created them isn't any less of a Johnny Hayseed who signed up for basic training, washed out, and then decided to go adventuring. Either can fight but no better than any other guard at lvl 1, because all lvl 1 guards should be fighters (or some other class, not to go too deep down the rabbit hole of "what classes should have what skills in what jobs"). What makes the Adventurer special is their motivation, but their motivation shouldn't start them with super-powers. It should deliver those to them as they explore the world, themselves, and their abilities.

(*) I guess you could define class levels as adventurer only, but even then at lvl 1 I'm not sure you're "better" enough to qualify as meaningful, and in 5e at least its irrelevant because the divorced system between opponents - even npcs - and players means its all nonsensical to justify anyway because the town guard there isn't a Fighter lvl 5 by the rules its a Monster labeled Fighter and will be stated according to what would be a challenge for the DM's needs. Which demands a lot of world based hand waving but that's not what the conversation was on.

[-] Kryomaani@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

The player characters are generally adventurers fated to achieve greatness, for them the extraordinary is just ordinary.

[-] troglodytis@lemmy.world 39 points 1 year ago

This was settled years ago

[-] Snailpope@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

TROGDOR THE BURNINATOR!

[-] ArbitraryValue@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 year ago

So they just have a scaly butt? I'm picturing a crocodile walking around except that instead of a tail it has butt cheeks like a human.

[-] Cylusthevirus@kbin.social 21 points 1 year ago

Another image I can hear thanks to Bill Wurtz.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 15 points 1 year ago

I recognize that the council has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid-ass decision i've elected to ignore it.

[-] HopeOfTheGunblade@kbin.social 13 points 1 year ago

Speaking as a person playing a soot-black tiefling...

[-] Kichae@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 year ago

This is the real reason I stopped playing D&D. The OGL stuff was just a smoke screen.

[-] lorty@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 year ago

Why are Japan and Korea the same color on this map? 🤨

[-] Spuddaccino@reddthat.com 25 points 1 year ago

It's a screen cap from a video talking about Japan's involvement in World War 2, where they invaded Korea.

[-] CrabLord@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

https://youtu.be/xuCn8ux2gbs

The video for those who are curious. Absolutely worth the 20 minutes.

[-] BioWarfarePosadist@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

I got around this by being a Path of the Beast Barbarian Dragonborn. I was a Weredragon and when I Raged I became more dragon like. I almost exclusively used the tail function for the shield reaction while still messing people up with a Magic Maul.

[-] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

BG3 adds tail options for Dragonborn sicko-yes

BG3 removes the previously-tabletop-canon breast options for Dragonborn sicko-no

[-] sundrei 7 points 1 year ago

You want a tail, play a Kobold!

[-] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

This only became an issue when we defeated a half dragon non-lethally and the DM was making small talk with the dragonborn.

Erm, tails are based, ofc my pc has one!
