The war could end tomorrow and oil prices will still be fucked for at least 6 months. This is high in the running for dumbest thing any president has ever done.

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 36 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Hegseth and trump seem legit surprised by Iran's actions even though they're exactly what every Middle East observer predicted...

Maybe chatgpt didn't warn them.

[–] Geobloke@aussie.zone 4 points 2 days ago

It's not like Iran has been wargaming this scenario since the 90s when the US booked the shit out of Iraq right?

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Gpt is generous, I assume he usually finds answers at the bottom of a bottle

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Admittedly, I'm reading this in a bar... And I think created the meme in said bar the other night...

Oh no, I'm becoming Pete hegseth.

Wait, calm down. Have you bombed any boats? Or have you double tap bombed any little girls hiding in a school?

If yes, then, ok, you're kegsbreath and you should do the world a favour by topping yourself.
If not then don't worry, you're just a normal alcoholic!!

[–] JustJack23@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I think it's just the most recent, all us presidents are war criminals in the end.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I didn't say criminal, I said stupid. Though it's high in the running for most criminal, too, since they're ordering war crimes at Nazi rates.

[–] Captainautism@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If I recall correctly, and someone correct me if I’m wrong here, but the first war criminal president we had in office was Nixon for arming Iran to the gills with nukes.

[–] CannonFodder@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Not nukes. Just lots of conventional weapons. Before the 1977 revolution in Iran, the U.S. sold them a bunch 'leagally', then the U.S. (arguably) triggered the revolution there, and after the religious nut jobs took power, Regan sold them lots of weapons (non nuclear) illegally (against the arms embargo) in the Iran/contra affair.

I don't think even Trump is dumb enough to try to distract people from the Epstein files by attacking Iran.

He did it because he wanted to do it.

[–] smeg@infosec.pub 22 points 3 days ago (2 children)

He did it because it helps fund Russia's war efforts. The US lifted sanctions on countries buying Russian oil.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, that's more likely than trying to distracting from Epstein.

[–] Alwaysnownevernotme@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They aren't mutually exclusive.

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

Yeah, plus it’s all part of flooding the zone. Everything distracts so nothing stays in the news.

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 3 points 3 days ago

I'm not sure what would stop him from doing that earlier though?

It's trump, he'd just tell his base it was a step in stopping a tenth war or whatever number he's claiming nowadays, and that he's lowering American gas prices.

[–] TheCriticalMember@aussie.zone 22 points 3 days ago

After predicting Obama was going to do it to stay in office 30 times he convinced himself it was a good idea.

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 5 points 3 days ago

I don't think it's entirely Epstein, that'd be facile. But, I do think that if trump is good at anything, it's generally PR/spin but Epstein is the one thing he hasn't been able to spin to get his base on side. And it's an issue where he, and his administration look increasingly bad (think Lutnick, the mishandled redactions, credible witness interview saying trump assaulted a 13 year old etc.)

It's also a matter of fact that trump has been acting much more erratic since the Epstein bill. Notably, carriers etc started building up in the South American theatre as the Epstein Transparency Act was being passed, with Maduro, Greenland and now Iran shortly after the initial deadlines.

Add really bad advice (oh yay, a Fox News host as secretary of defence), a cadre of yes men without the adult guardrails of the first administration and a streak of risky decisions not backfiring (e.g., striking Iran's nuclear facilities and kidnapping Maduro) and you can see the stage being set for increasingly bad decisions.

Again, I don't think it's ALL Epstein but I do think trump is desperate to keep people distracted and that he doesn't plan long term. So yeah, he's probably been wanting to strike Iran and now that his mental calculus adds "keep people from talking Epstein" to the benefits column and that may be enough.

Trump is all "i dont care / do u" about oil prices and killing US soldiers. So don't hold yer breath.

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I dunno, he seems bent on trying to convince people it'll all be short term.

And after bitching with India about sanctions on Russian oil, has had to embarrassingly reverse course AND release about half of the available strategic reserve.

I think he knows high oil prices will destroy the republicans in the midterms.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

You do bring up good points

[–] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

We need to find a way to get this bastard and his admin removed for treason.

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Win huge in the midterms, it's the only way. Even that might not be enough, Dems need to win a few Senate seats in Red territory (Texas, North Carolina and Maine) and pray trump's approval tanks.

[–] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not just Dems. Dems who aren't afraid of the establishment and are willing to burn the donors.

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Might be a failure of my imagination, but I have trouble picturing a Dem donor who would feel burned by Dems going after trump.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your comment?

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm not them, but our oligarchs spend tons of money corrupting politicians on both sides^[I hate that fucking term because both sides are NOT the same..... but..... this is one area where many of them are. bleh] which pushes many Dems to be centrist and corrupt and serving the oligarchs. Truly progressive democrats are relatively rare.

Basically what this person said, yes. Donors like stability. Removal and rapid death penalties are unstable.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

this bastard and his admin

And all Republicans. And most Democrats. And the oligarchs funding/controlling the process. For a start.

[–] auraithx@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 days ago

The US is a net oil exporter since 2017, this also has upsides for trump. But given American's obsession with gas prices, Trump will probably have to do some intervention to ensure fuel prices inside the US go back to normal, or he will lose popularity. Inb4 oil tarrif in T-1 month ?

[–] Xerxos@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Do you really think he cares about that? He has taken enough bribes to never care about the cost of anything ever again.

Sure, the people will suffer but his loyal cult members will never blame him.

The economy will suffer, but that's just more opportunities for insider trading for his family.

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 1 points 2 days ago

Yes.

Losing the midterms means he loses all sorts of immunity and protections. At the very least, more from the Epstein files comes out.

A big Dem win in 2028 (including the Senate) might see him prosecuted. (It's hard to imagine a Dem not running on "we will prosecute the evil fucks in those files.")

Americans don't care about much but high gas prices are political suicide.
