According to Harvard research, eating oranges stimulates growth of Faecalibacterium prausnitzia.

This bacteria lives inside the human gut and generates serotonin and dopamine β€” 2 powerful molecules that elevate your mood.

Harvard is one of the top 5 research universities in the world. Gary Ruvkun won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Where does he work ? Harvard.

Have a shower orange.

Put orange in fridge to make it cool. Take orange to shower. Observe orange and realize you can eat it as messy and feral as you want. Go full lycanthrope on the orange. Shower off the juice. Go back to being an animal pretending to blend into a society, but now, you know better.

I suggest using a drain filter, then you can just spit out any seeds and just drop the bitter stringy parts.

Aren't they the same substance used in the white part of the peel below the delicious zest? Though I might be thinking about clementines and the white stringy bits that run from top to bottom along the centre. Been a while since I had a proper orange but don't they have even more of that white stuff?

I think the membrane that surrounds the little juice packets is also bitter, if you separate it from the good parts.

Honestly, I have no idea, I can't even taste bitter, I just eat it all haha

Hello poor person. Are you sad because the unprecedented rise of global wealth inequality and corruption has robbed you of any realistic hope for success and stability? Have you tried eating an orange?

I can't afford an orange, so no...

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 4 days ago

may i offer you an orange in this trying time?

If you're happy and you know it, eat an orange

If you're unhappy and you know it, eat an orange

You know what? Fuck it, eat an orange

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 14 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I don't wanna be that guy, but I have to be fair and ask:

Why should I know this?

[–] Sludge@sh.itjust.works 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Because if you're sad now, but you want to be happy - you should probably eat an orange. It's a nice thing to know

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah I know, but its not in the body of the post per Rule 2. Plenty of really bad YSKs that didnt belong here had the same thing and I called some of them out too. So in order to be fair I have to ask it here too, thats all.

The fediverse is falling into the same "eh, close enough" trap that homogenizes communities. Look at nostupidquestions, it's already a general questions community devoid of uniqueness

Because you're in denial about your depression

[–] rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

Oh no I'm not.

What if I'm depressed about my denial?

[–] Hiro8811@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

And they say money doesn't buy happiness

[–] Zacryon@feddit.org 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The study is more correlation than causality. Even though they tried to be careful they did not (and can't) account for a plethora of confounding factors, which – especially with depression – is particularly problematic.

They provide a plausible explanation for a causal pathway, but did not prove it. This provides a testable hypothesis, which is why I would read this more like "more research needed", rather than definitive proof. I wouldn't go as far as to say "eat an orange a day, to keep depression away". Although it probably wouldn't hurt to eat some more fruit, given how bad the fruit content in most people's diet is anyway.

So this is, unfortunately, a rather sensationalist takeaway you've provided here, OP. But that's the curse of how we're doing capitalism. Even 'top research universities' like Harvard need to be sensationalist to attract some publicity and get their research funded.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 4 days ago

really though, i fail to see any possible downside to eating a bunch of oranges, they're not even expensive.
Like.. worst case you make things around you sticky and attract ants?

[–] Scotty_Trees@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

I've had chronic pain and depression since I was a kid, I don't think oranges can fix me, but thanks for the advice, I'm sure it'll help someone that's better off.

[–] SUDO@reddthat.com 6 points 6 days ago

Sounds like something Big-Citrus would say.

[–] getFrog@piefed.social 6 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I don't need the serotonin and dopamine inside my gut, I need it in my brain. ..Will shoving an orange up my nose work?

[–] braxy29@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

look up gut-brain axis and mental health for some new insights

[–] OozingPositron@feddit.cl 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I used to take pieces of orange peel, bend them so the inside turns convex and inhale it through my nose, it helped me stay awake in class.

[–] JackFrostNCola@aussie.zone 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I do a similar thing but i bend the orange peel inside a short glass to spritz the oils, then occasionally lift the glass to my nose and enjoy.

Oh i forgot i also add ~80ml of whiskey, a squirt of simple syrup and 3 dashes of bitters first.

[–] PixeIOrange@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.cafe 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Or just eat an orange. You don't have to be sad.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 4 days ago

Are you said?
Do you want to be?
No well then eat an orange pre-emptively.

Heading to the store...
