solar is cheaper, easier and faster to install, with no security concerns. what the fuck is wrong with the current US government? even if trump's brain is turbofucked, some asshole in DoE must've run the numbers right? how in god's name do you think this will play out?

This leans up against the big reason I'm against nuclear energy as a "solution" to green house gasses. In theory it's a nearly perfect source of energy, in practice it will be managed by cost-cutting capitalists.
If it were to ever become widespread in usage and the main source of energy, then I would expect to hear about dumb bullshit nearly immediately

"but but but Chernobyl was a tremendous failure and so many things went wrong there's no way it could happen these days" as if humanity stopped being capable of tremendous failure and Swiss Cheese Model failures the moment Communism Fell™

fedposting ”so you say you need this for your start up?

joker-laden “yes please I’m a LLC”

[–] Moidialectica@hexbear.net 12 points 22 hours ago

We are gonna get misplaced plutonium incidents in a few years huh

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 51 points 1 day ago

This is just a cover to "lose track" of some material so that it can be delivered to those Xinjiang separatists or something.

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 5 points 19 hours ago

It's ok. I was told they redesigned the Tiantic and it won't sink this time.

Can't wait for this season of the Blowback podcast

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 30 points 1 day ago (3 children)

If this results in blowback like that I don't know if there will be anymore podcasts.

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 11 points 21 hours ago

It’ll just be that old British animated film about nuclear Armageddon where they climb into bags to die

Well, technically it’ll be the audio of it. But it works as a radio play.

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 4 points 18 hours ago

That season will be a Fallout style post apocalyptic radio broadcast intercut with twee 40s and 50s music

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 9 points 22 hours ago

Most of the blowback seasons don't have much blowback.

lmao this is so good

[–] Nama@hexbear.net 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Isn't plutonium always 'weapons grade'? It's not like with Uranium where you have to isolate its isotopes.

[–] polyushka_polye@hexbear.net 7 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Pu-240 content determines the grade of Pu. It has a (relatively) high rate of spontaneous fission, so too much of it in the fissile mass can cause predetonation.

[–] Nama@hexbear.net 3 points 15 hours ago

Interesting. Til.

lol they are just giving direct control of nukes to oligarchs now

[–] darkcalling@hexbear.net 37 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Later headlines: Oh oopsie they conveniently "lost it" and the investigation found no trace of how, how convenient!

Oh oopsie 8 months later a nuke that looks like it used that material was used on Russia/Iran/China but it was totally Ukraine/Kurds/ISIS who did it, they must have stolen it or bought it, tee hee America is sorry this happened and promises to take security more seriously with its private nuke sector.

Everything old is new again!

Apollo affair

The Apollo affair or NUMEC affair was a 1965 incident in which a US company, NUMEC, in the Pittsburgh suburbs of Apollo and Parks Township, Pennsylvania, was investigated for losing 200–600 pounds (91–272 kg) of highly enriched uranium, with suspicions that it had gone to Israel's nuclear weapons program.

Exactly what I was thinking of.

Really seems like the fascists are teaming up with Si valley to create dual power. Eggman & Shitler, the Vampire and that weirdo from google are starting a drone factory and making drones modeled after the Shahed so they can sidestep the federal government.

Always have been.

You should read Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism, and the World by Malcolm Harris. Stanford University was the birthplace of eugenics.

[–] piccolo@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Love that book, so happy to see it recommended. It's long, but it reads easily and the author is very good at crafting a compelling narrative that ties it all together.

Also can't recommend Surveillance Valley by Yashar Levine enough, along the same lines.

[–] buttwater@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Local library has 0 copies available and 3 holds on the 1 copy in stock

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

I can get you a free pdf when I get home. With Harris blessing no less.

Thanks, I should probably let @Cowbee@hexbear.net know about it since I am sure many of the things on his excellent ML reading list are in there and likely some things he also hasn't read.

[–] Cowbee@hexbear.net 3 points 9 hours ago

I actually know of this one, I believe thelastaxolotl gave me the link last year when I made the initial list. There's a good deal I haven't read yet in it though, and you reminded me of its existence, so thanks!

[–] buttwater@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You're an angel, thank you

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Updated my comment with a link to the megadrive folder. Lots of good shit in there. Quite a few audio books too.

[–] buttwater@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hell yeah getting my browse on

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago

In fact we even have the official audio book for Palo Alto in there

  1. Declare yourself a ai startup

  2. Get plutonium from the government

  3. Give it to Iran

  4. ???

  5. Profit!

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago
  1. ~~Profit~~ Proliferate!

Im sure the plutonium totally won't go "missing" and find itself in the hands of US sponsored terrorists like the Zionists /s
