Will there be a red bus that says "We need EU subsidies to fund the NHS." ?

Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
- Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.
(This list may get expanded as necessary.)
Posts that link to the following sources will be removed
- on any topic: Al Mayadeen, brusselssignal:eu, citjourno:com, europesays:com, Breitbart, Daily Caller, Fox, GB News, geo-trends:eu, news-pravda:com, OAN, RT, sociable:co, any AI slop sites (when in doubt please look for a credible imprint/about page), change:org (for privacy reasons), archive:is,ph,today (their JS DDoS websites)
- on Middle-East topics: Al Jazeera
- on Hungary: Euronews
Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com
(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)
Ban lengths, etc.
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)
How funny would it be if the EU said no?
If the UK were to return, they would likely have to give up the pound.
yea. the uk had the sweetest of sweetheart deals with the e.u. before. not likely to again if they ever came crawling back.
It's already been ruled out. They start like everyone else.
As a Brit who never supported leaving in the first place, good. We had a great deal and we pissed it away by being idiots. If we go back in and there are essentially no consequences for it, we'll just end up trying to go in and out every time the government switches away from Labour.
Extremely.
Well, nobody is asking the EU yet. It's about what the Brits want.
Of course they are. This has been an ongoing situation for a few months. Last i heard the EU wouldnt be opposed as long as there are hefty punishments in case of another exit.
My understanding is there is no reentry process, so they would be going through the same process new members go through, so there is a very real possibility they simply wouldn't make the cut.
They definitely wouldn't, as it stands right now.
They would have to give up the pound as currency, for one.
That alone might push public opinion against EU membership.
The Brits saying they want to reverse Brexit don't realize that that isn't possible. Britain had a lot of exemptions from EU rules carved out for them when they were still members, which would be gone if they reapply.
Oh yea I forgot that they were allowed to keep the pound
The longer you wait for the next poll, the more old remainers will have died and the more likely is your success...
I largely agree with your logic, but if they wait too long for the next poll, theyβll be doing it under a reform government
I feel like that's a theme in general across many countries. When will that generation just die already?
Like we want you back ππ
Especially after seeing this
That bullshit is exactly why the sane people who never wanted to leave, want back into europe. The EU kept the worst impulses of our government in check.
Man, I'd love to rejoin and couldn't care less about switching to the Euro, but I'm not sure we deserve it in such a short time span since leaving.
Of course you deserve it. You got fucked over by con artists, happens to nearly everyone, just don't fall for that shit again in the next fifty years.
Nigel Farage is leading in the polls.
Yes. But supported by a minority.
First-past-the-post is a terrible voting system.
Absolutely. I didn't mean this as a good thing. I meant to respond to
just donβt fall for that shit again in the next fifty years.
with "regrettably, we seem to be heading rapidly for compounding our error".
You alone are welcome to come back π
I'll take it!
brother!
"Half of people who break up with their SO end up leaving drunk phone messages"
What kind of messed up reality do those 20% of Reform voters who want a second Brexit vote live in?
It's the same with the 30% Trump supporters left.
They are doing some religious thing, by projecting their wishes, hopes and dreams onto a person or political party. It stops being politics and becomes a magical believe system.
Which scares me, since that means one third of the population (and maybe more) are basically actively working against democracy on behalf of some leader figure or movement.
Why is this suprising, %48 voted no.
I mean, they left already. It's a done deal, regardless of if the deal was crappy to begin with. What's another vote going to prove? And why would the EU take them back when they already demonstrated that they'll gladly ratfuck a plebiscite to get the result they want?
I suspect if we did have another vote, it wouldn't go in favour of Rejoin anyway (and I say this as a remainer who never supported leave at all.) I suspect a lot of people assume we'll be rejoining with the same deal we had before, so if we tried to rejoin and Europe said we have to accept the Euro, the right-wing papers would fire up and have a field day about it, and a big chunk of those people who wanted a second vote would flip sides.
