Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

The worst is after the fourth of july, when I have a fight with myself whether to buy the discounted red, white & blue M&Ms.

I usually do a big bash on the 4th, I had friends ask why they hadn't heard any details about the party yet. I told them it's because I'm not feeling particularly patriotic these days so I'm not doing the party.

Sadly none of them disagreed.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 27 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Save those party plans for the day the orange one croaks...

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I have a bottle of whiskey on standby for that glorious day.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I no longer drink whiskey, but I'll definitely roll a fat joint and crack open a cold beer 🍻

[–] neomachino@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 day ago

I don't drink or smoke anymore, but I'll probably pick up a fancy cigar and a case of seltzers.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 day ago

It's going to be a rough Independence Day

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 31 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We had baby clothes donated to us and in the pile was an American flag onesie.. I threw it straight into the trash. I'm not proud of being American. If I could I would leave right now and I regret having a child here.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

How dare you disgrace a trashcan like that! You should have thrown it into a bonfire instead..

[–] Dzheyk@sh.itjust.works 25 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Always nice to see I'm very much not alone in the "not feeling very patriotic" mood.

[–] TRBoom@lemmy.zip 30 points 2 days ago (2 children)

We took our flag down in 2016 and again in 2024. A guy on our street flies his upside down which is, I think, braver.

[–] Dzheyk@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago

In a similar vaine, I've seen at least two neighbors that have taken their Trump flags down which, while small, is nice to see. I'd love to see a brave soul around me to fly their flag upside down. If ever I put a flag pole up it will only be to fly the flag of Rohan or Gondor.

[–] zwerg@feddit.org 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

As a European... why are you all flying flags in the first place? I find it a bit weird...

[–] TRBoom@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It’s a cultural difference.

[–] rtxn@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

"Deeply institutionalized nationalistic indoctrination" is probably more accurate. I'd bring up historic parallels, but that would fall outside the scope of this community.

[–] bigbangdangler@reddthat.com 32 points 2 days ago (7 children)

That is interesting, because Bic was founded in and is headquarted in France. I wonder why they are putting America 250 on everything.

In any event, they are the best lighters. They light consistently no matter how long they sit. Can't let a Zippo sit more than a couple days without having to maintain it before lighting.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago

Haven't you noticed just about every immigrant-run businesses can be identified by the profusion of American flags on displa'?

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 43 points 2 days ago

I wonder why they are putting America 250 on everything.

Because 💰

A big part of the market is "freedom loving rednecks" that won't let the man take away their smokes so yeehaw let's make these lighters more american.

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 35 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Same reason Oreilly Auto Parts is now selling "limited edition" cans of fucking brake cleaner solvent with "Americas 250th anniversary" labels. The patriotic glaze market is YUUUGE.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago

WTF? Pathetic

[–] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Bic is the epitome of cheap products that just fucking work. At least the pens and lighters. They work every time no matter how long it's been. They are cheap, dependable, and unmatched in design. They're also iconic and quintessential products recognized and revered worldwide. GOAT.

[–] tyler@programming.dev 4 points 1 day ago

Y’all are using different bic products than me…

[–] adarza@piefed.ca 12 points 2 days ago

"usa#1"

made in france

fitting. if it weren't for france, the 4th might not mean a damn thing.

[–] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I assume most companies are cashing in on the semiquincentennial

[–] adarza@piefed.ca 2 points 14 hours ago

trying to avoid it here but it's a little difficult.

on the plus side, a government office nearby covered their lawns with pride displays with not one shred of red, white and blue anywhere. love it. i think of all the local yokels that must be fuming over it every time i go by.

[–] scutiger@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Reading the word semiquincentennial just irks me for some reason. Like why use a word for the half of five centuries instead of just the number 250?

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Indeed they are the best lighters, no doubt about that. I've only ever gotten one defective new Bic in my entire life, and that was defective because the flint was stuck and it wouldn't spark.

My main issue with bic lighters is the fact that you can't easily change the flint like you can with a clipper, or even a swan, lighter. The rectangle shape is also less sturdy than the circular lighters, and more likely to break if you use them to open beer bottles.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 27 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I was dead tired the other week, it was hot, in those cases, my default is Diet Mountain Dew, it's brisk, not too thick and heavily caffeinated.

I currently can't find it anywere that's not the 250 flag so i just refuse to buy any.

Also took a southwest flight a month ago and ended up on this monstrosity

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Oof, image not loading on Jerboa, but I copy/pasted the link into Fennec (Firefox based) browser and it loaded up just fine.

Holy shit that's hideous!

[–] nullroot@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago

I had similar issues with jerboa and eventually switched to voyager. I'm a pretty happy camper with it.

Also yeah, gross plastering

[–] adarza@piefed.ca 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

almost looks like a future 'donation' to señor spray-tan.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 1 points 15 hours ago

When it pulled up to the gate, the gate attendant made a big deal about how beautiful and how amazing it is and how we were so lucky to get the fly on it.

I was in the south and some guy behind me voiced in a deep southern accent: Jesus, I didn't know they were going to roll up into here with George Washington standing on the top with bald eagle on a leash in both hands. What the fuck man.

I don't think that the fact was lost on anyone that some amount of money in our ticket went to painting that and redoing all that shit

[–] adarza@piefed.ca 7 points 2 days ago

if you can stomach walmart. the wally world version of diet dew (not the 'zero' shit, though) isn't terrible. available in 2L and packs of cans. no 250 shit anywhere.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 3 points 1 day ago
[–] JamesBoeing737MAX@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 day ago

We have some BIC lighters. Some are refillable, but have a weird plug (it's probably more common in the US). I once bought a Nola lighter (a German company, as far as I know, they're pretty popular with the older gens of smokers who still refill their lighter). It's great, never buying a BIC after that.

[–] solarvector@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago

We got season tickets to a local music theater. The last one of the season is a 250 celebration. Tickets given away to neighbors who are happy for the night away from kids.

[–] Hello_there@fedia.io 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We can be proud of lasting 249 years before we imploded

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You can dial that number back a bit by around 10 years to before the one that managed to bankrupt casinos ended up president...

[–] Hello_there@fedia.io 4 points 2 days ago

Imo, we fucked around and found out once. Faced consequences for bad decisions. That was bad. But then, we decided to do that again...
It just proves that the relevant parties had the opportunity to learn from it, and just decided not to. I think that's much worse and proves actual decline rather than a momentary fuckup.
