All I've got to tell her is,

Golly gee whiz, girl, it almost sounds like you MAYBE would have been a lot better off if you STAYED THE FUCK OUT OF UKRAINE.

When (OR IF) you do get out, do yourself the biggest favor in your pathetic loser life and DON'T COME BACK.

Sounds like a problem only conscription can solve. Have a nice holiday!

Videos and media posted to this com always appear unavailable for me, almost without fail. I haven't yet figured out why.

Mine always look like this

What app you using? Try another one, I use Voyager on iOS and it works great, for example

It's an mp4, so maybe Jerboa can't handle that.

It shows up in Firefox in the Lemmy Web UI for me.

Another possibility

it's hosted on files.catbox.moe, and given that catbox allows arbitrary uploads of files, I'm sure that there's content that people have uploaded that violate pornography laws in some jurisdictions, and it's possible that you're in a country or on a network that that has some sort of network blacklist that includes catbox. You might try opening the URL directly in a Web browser. If you can't open that, probably it's your network provider.

Crimea river

I’m at a loss with these people. You visit a contested area in an active war zone and then you’re shocked when shit like this happens. Is the propaganda in Russia so complete that this eludes them?

[–] Rose@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 hours ago

It's not contested to them. They view the referendum as fair. Until recently, there were practically no signs of it being a war zone. They'd go on vacation to spend time by the sea and some would even buy property there without any issues.

[–] tunetardis@piefed.ca 12 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah same. I am so confused by this whole Crimea business. Russia took over in 2014. Did they offer really generous incentives for people to move in? Or was it more stick than carrot?

I seem to recall Ukraine retaliating by cutting off the water supply to the peninsula, which makes me think it would've been pretty shitty to stick around, let alone move in? And then when the current war got under way, Russia made it a priority to reestablish the water supply. But then they (the Russians) blew up the dam that controlled it?!? Like none of this makes any sense to me.

I think it can be summarised thusly:

  1. it's a holiday destination
  2. they're fucking idiots
[–] lokalhorst@feddit.org 26 points 8 hours ago

I think it actually is. For years the war was something very distant for most Russians, like a war somewhere else in the world, and the government did everything possible to upkeep this reality. I mean you are endangered if you even speak with other people about the war, how would you get info as an average citizen?

Suck it up.

she might be in for a surprise when she finally gets to moscow and everything is on fire and it's raining black soot

Could Ukraine please schedule a drone hit for the moment she gets off the train, or you know those view spots where you're approaching the city in a train/car, and you get that first amazing view, often from higher up. Yes please!

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 32 points 10 hours ago

Yeah, how on earth did she ever get there? Must have been an alien abduction or something.

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 14 points 9 hours ago

Seizing land you’ve invaded seems to be mostly about getting average, non-thinking people to move and stay there, unaware of their entitlement. See Crimea, Israel, USA …
