Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Then I would recommend Haven

Good news: I've heard that literally every single game is woke now.

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 26 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Paint your space marines pink, say they are female and voilà. Now you know which people not to play with.

[–] Soulg@ani.social 4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

paint your space marines pink

Fuck yeah I'm sure there's at least one chapter out there with pink as a color yolo

Say they are female

HERESY

(Because of the lore)

[–] Zgierwoj@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 6 days ago

40k lore went through so many changes, the stuff about only men being able to be marines is not really the most essential part to the story, is it? I guess its not really something they can change on the whim, because if there are female space marines there should be female space marine characters too, probably.

Also every superfan of warhammer Ive heard told me that Games Workshop sucks so maybe homebrewing your own stuff is okay. Maybe you could come up with the lore that it works with a modified geneseed and your own special chapter is special in their own special way because of that

[–] carpelbridgesyndrome@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

On one of the 40k subreddits there was a post where somone let their girlfriend decorate their one of their minis with pink paint and lace. The sub's very reasonable conclusion was that the rest needed to be redecorated with lace as well

No such thing - there’s either games or Nazi shit. That’s the opposite of woke: Nazi

[–] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

i feel like there should be a category that can distinguish a game about changing your pronouns and transitioning under a brutal dictatorship and a game about monkeys popping bloons

[–] lIlIlIlIlIlIl@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I’m just passionate about nazi = trash. There’s nuance for everything else, but not that

[–] ugo@feddit.it 4 points 1 week ago

Why do you sully the good name of trash?

i thought we could play settlers of catan.... but iguess that whatever colonialism or whatevee "ism" word the leftists come up with next.,, sigh /j but also /nj? i have no idea anymore... everything is bad, there is no ethical life under capitalism, whatever.

these thoughts dont just help with making people angry and wanting to do revolution, but also makes them depressed about themselves actively being bad for essentially everyone else. whatever whatever im - im just - im tired of all this. im tired of long leftists posts where they use weird burogugiese or whatever other words which... i think are supposed to sound smart or emulate mister Marx?... idunno.

i want to play settlers of catan without feeling bad about it. its a fun game sometimes and can make friendships closer. and thats what i need rn. whatever whatever something something yapping in a long comment and complaining about long posts.... yea i know.

A long time ago, when I was a little chrizzo kid, I asked my mother if I should stop playing Pokemon because the pastor said it was made by satan.

She said that some people will always try to find evil in things that they can control. Little evils that they can fight about, but that ultimately don't matter. There are Big Evils in the world that heroes try to fight without ever making progress. But the little evil is easy to kill. So the cowards kill all the little evils and then, when they run out, they start inventing more little evils. They rile themselves up about dice and beer and Pokemon, all so they don't have to fight the Big Evils.

If you dare face the real problems in the world, if you defend truth and justice, if you stand up for your beliefs, then you don't have to worry about the little evils biting your ankles. You can even play with them if you want.

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 week ago

loved this comment. thank u. i am certainly playing with... one if the little evils... anyway, again, thank u, this was a fun read.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

people usually say that "there is no ethical life under capitalism" isn't an excuse for being a consumer, but i'll go the other way and say it is an excuse. because when you've been born into the system you have no choice but to participate, and that means you have to live with two conflicting ideas in your head: "the system must be destroyed for us to survive" and "i must use the system for me to survive".

and i know you're a clever gal. you know that catan is not a driver of neocolonialism, just like you know that monopoly isn't responsible for actual housing crises and that risk doesn't start wars. they are not the system. they are just of it. like you. so go play. have fun. it's the best thing we can do for ourselves.

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

now thats a fresh perspective! 🍃🌊🍋

it kinda should count as an excuse ... there is an argument to be made that essentially becoming Buddha is ethical, but - that's not gonna get us anywhere but on the streets i think.

someone else said that catan is an awfully boring game... is it? what games would u like to play instead?

My friends and I got bored with regular Catan, but not because it's a boring game, we just played it so much

Check local game stores for used copies of the expansions, but also just make up your own rules! One of our go-to "rules" is starting with all the resource tiles face-down and not flipping them until someone's built a settlement on it

Games are supposed to be fun, tweak the rules as much as you want :)

[–] lime@feddit.nu 5 points 1 week ago

yeah we can only do what we can, and not managing to be some kind of enlightened super-being isn't a personal failure. that's just life.

catan is what got me into board games, and i've played it quite a few times. it does suffer from being one of the earlier entries in the current "renaissance" in that there is not a lot of player interaction and what there is is disruptive. that said, it's still a good intro to the meatier stuff.

my recent plays include Skull, a 5-minute bluffing game; Earthborne Rangers, a cooperative adventure where you walk through a big forest and help people with their problems; Mind MGMT, a 4-v-1 hidden-movement game where a team tries to find a spy; Ark Nova, where you compete to build habitats for endangered animals; Codenames, where two teams try to puzzle together related words; and Root, where you play as cute forest animals embroiled in a violent conflict.

there's so much out there now that you can basically just pick a theme you like and there will be like 15-20 games about that specific thing.

[–] Tiresia@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If someone runs a 100m dash in 13 seconds, does that mean you should hate yourself for running a 100m dash in 40 seconds? If someone publishes a paper about a new form of group theory, does that mean you should hate yourself for struggling with algebra? Then why are you upset when someone can enjoy themself using only woke games?

You've got to learn to be okay with being morally imperfect, just like you already know how to be okay with being physically and intellectually imperfect. It is fine to choose to perpetuate certain harmful structures even as you're trying to abolish them. We're stuck in a quagmire, every move we make is going to make something worse. But if we are clever, we can do more harm than good by the end of it.

Guilt is bullshit. Doing harm being bad or evil is bullshit. That's what "no ethical consumption under capitalism" means; stop trying to pursue an impossible ideal of moral purity. Try to do better, but don't burn yourself out. Take breaks. Use milk in pancakes. Play a colonialist board game. You're still running laps around everyone on the couch.

But none of that means cows aren't getting sexually and physically violated to get you that milk. None of that means colonialist media isn't rewiring your brain to think with colonial logic. None of that means we shouldn't celebrate people who have managed to rid themselves of these trappings and made a good life for themselves without them.

It's true that there are a lot of people who do demand moral excellence from you, but fuck them. Do what you need to do to prevent their bad sportsmanship from souring you on your journey.

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

hm? oh nonono im not upset with it, it just really triggered me for some reason... i got into a topic which doesnt have much to do with the actual post content, that was my bad. also imma assume u meant "we can do more good than harm by the end of it", and if not im not sure i understand how that is being clever.

I read ur whole comment, it was a fun read, i liked it. I really am clinging to that ideal version myself that cant exist... It's about balance iguess...

[–] erotador@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

the phrase i think your referring to is "theres no ethical consumption under capitalism". the point of saying this isnt to imply you shouldnt consume if you want to be ethical. not consuming would mean shunning society and your fellow humans, you dont gain anything from reinventing the wheel.

instead you should analyze the root of the unethical consumption and seek to understand what it wants, and how to combat it. affirmative action, helping people in need, thats ethical, and you do this best when you can effectively fight unethical systems.

one of my favorite pieces of media is stargate, a show about the us airforce, that acts as some real military porn propaganda. i think the show flys in the face of this with its underlying messages. this show, no matter how much it portrays terrible organizations as good people, (it nearly always does) also has a lot to say about the bad sides, and if you pay attention you can learn valuable lessons that may otherwise never reach a different target audience. many young people who watched this show and thought "cool guns and aliens" probobaly also took away lessons that will stick with them and help them make the world a better place.

all of this is to say, you can enjoy problematic things as long as your willing to engage with why they are a problem aswell.

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago

i know that the quote was wrong, i was trynna overly exaggerate there- (as in: i need to consume water to live, thus----yea)

but yeaaaaaa i knowwwwwwww something something balance something something being mindful while still enjoying a thing i know...

[–] nylo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I only make enemies playing catan 😭

it's worse than monopoly

I just wanted to give you some reassurance for these feelings. I totally relate to this and it can be exhausting. 🫂

I also think getting rid of things we enjoy becausw they're newly associated with something objectionable gives the bad people way too much power. Enjoy what you enjoy. Reclaim it for the good people.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There's a balance to be found. Something funding evil is wildly different from something that's kinda problematic. You should be doing media analysis and not looking at what you consume uncritically, but that's not to mean you can't enjoy it anyways.

um... yeah. how would i ever play a sleep game?

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I wish I could play games while sleeping 😔

[–] CarstenBoll@feddit.dk 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Bröther, let me tell you about this magical thing called 'dreams'!

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

I do reload quicksaves in dreams. I don't even consciously intend to lucid dream or accidentally try to do it in day to day life, I just intuitively know I can roll back the clock. I often wake up shortly after and transition my dream into a daydream, but none of them are quite the same as playing a game.

I don't know if I play any games advertised as woke, but I would certainly play any game that just happens to be so.

Advertising it feels like they're focusing too much on the wrong things to be making a creative work that I would enjoy.

When topics are hamfisted into a game it feels yucky. There are always clever exceptions though.

According to the nutjobs who unironically get upset at wokeness, anything that involves thinking is "woke." So yes.

on a related note, Pronoun Palace just came out and looks like it'd be fun, but I'm willing to admit I might be attracted to the theming rather than the actual gameplay
