yall should get checked for neurodivergence if its relatable, assumed this was adhd-memes

[–] NormalHumanBreathing@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I got diagnosed at 52, i only discovered that forgetting to eat and being shaky wasn't normal when i turned up that way to a therapy session and my therapist pointed out that, that wasn't a normal thing.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lord knows I had it. I knew I had it. My married partner of 8 years knew I had it.

At 39 I finally got diagnosed with ADHD last week.

[–] EyIchFragDochNur@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What has changed for you now having it attested?

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I'll let you know when my prescription comes in this week.

But a lot of validation and vindication emotionally when family all my years said "no you're not ADHD, no one in our family is X or Y". Meanwhile my father and 3 uncles are all engineers or architects and are un-diagnosed autistic as fuck (My married partner is autistic and has met them all and every time we leave we get in the car and they say "Holy fuck he's so fucking autistic")

[–] vinyl@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

isn't it related to low blood sugar if your body becomes weak and shaky?

[–] CyberTheProtogen@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

You get low blood sugar from not eating. You don’t get the normal hunger cues before that point if you have something happening in your brain

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

I used to get hangry AF. Couldn't miss a meal, i'd just be absolutely miserable.

One day, I went let's try keto.

After going into and out of keto a few times, I no longer get ravenous. It's now years later and I'm just mmm i could stand to eat now.

Adhd will do that to you.

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I used to not anything all day, then take an edible and eat all of my calories at once. Depending on stress, sometimes I regress to only being able to eat a few safe foods (when it’s really bad - only the pizza and nacho lunchables), and weed usually helps there.

Since I had stomach surgery recently and have to eat small things frequently, I bought a shit ton of bulk snacks and I always keep some with me. I also gave myself permission to buy bottled water. It’s helped a lot to have little things on hand, so I don’t have to interrupt whatever I’m doing to eat. I just grab some goldfish crackers and a water bottle out of my backpack and then I’m good to go.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

How about sitting back utterly satisfied with your complete meal and then noticing that others look like they've started eating?

Oops

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I just drink water when I am hungry. Stay hydrated.

[–] BeUnique@lemmy.zip 60 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Me: "Why am I so angry about nothing?"

[–] Skylordd78@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Does forgetting to drink water and eat food make you more angry and emotional over things? Cause random outbursts and random mood swings?

[–] HrabiaVulpes@europe.pub 4 points 1 day ago

Yes. There is even a very short psychology guide:

  • Angry at everyone - needs food
  • Everyone angry at you - needs sleep
  • You angry at yourself - needs shower

Generally emotions are partially chemical and if your body doesn't get basic needs satisfied, it will cause you to feel negative emotions.

Very much so, yes.

If I could binge eat once a week and then not have to bother to eat for the rest of that week, I'd be so happy.

[–] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 42 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Hungry? Try eating 197 pounds of raw salmon. You certainly won't regret eating 197 pounds of raw salmon.

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Meal prep fiber/protein rich food is my best attempt at this. I usually do brown rice with toppings and egg every single day; twice per day. Very hard to get bored because you can vary the toppings - eggplant, beans, curry, soy protein, stir fried stuff - and brown rice is fiber which is hard to be bored of smaller carb/glucose-spike footprint.

Just don't freeze it, the crystals will mush the texture and you'll get bored of the slop feel very quickly.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honestly, I took a look at fiber a few years ago and realized that it was basically absent from my diet.

I started treating it like a game.

Just generally, I feel so much better, my poos aren't markers, my stomach is not ever "doing something" and just generally I don't have to think about it. Plus I dropped a bunch of weight kinda by accident.

I'm kinda starting to think that if you basically aim for fiber the rest works out. You end up eating larger quantities of less dense calories.

Though, I may have inadvertently discovered that dairy makes my tummy gross too

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

fiber is under rated for real

[–] sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world 40 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I cannot relate less to a meme. 😂

Me, staring at the unopened biscuits in my desk drawer:

(Context: I’ve had 2 moderate meals today already and have something planned for dinner.)

[–] CyberTheProtogen@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah I feel like it’s genuinely problematic if you do that kinda stuff. My stomach feels like I ate two knives if I haven’t eaten in even six hours.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not all of us are neurotypical. I'll literally go all day just sitting around at home on a day off and realize it's 6pm and I haven't eaten all day. I literally just forgot to eat.

[–] CyberTheProtogen@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hey I’m not neurotypical either. I have ADHD and a bunch of other stuff. But I feel like it’s probably not physically healthy to consistently do that kind of thing. Especially if it’s consistent in its inconsistency.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago

Of course it isn't healthy.

The point I'm making is I and many people do it unintentionally.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 26 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I eat when I am on the verge of throwing up due to low blood sugar.

You might have type 1 diabetes.

Skipping a meal shouldn't give you shakes.

[–] thebestaquaman@lemmy.world 48 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I see you haven't experienced "doing something with tunnel vision for 16 hours before realising that you're shaking because you forgot to eat and that your last meal was dinner yesterday around 26 hours ago". I don't think you need the beetus to experience that.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

One time I "forgot" to get out of bed, because I was just "one more game" from the moment i woke up. Finally caved to go to the toilet and get some breakfast. 1am.

[–] Padit@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

It is truly curious how different all our lives are.

You might have type 1 diabetes.

Skipping a meal shouldn’t give you shakes.

Or you're just neurodivergent.

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's not how that works.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Exactly. Which is why suggesting that someone shaking from not eating = diabetes is a bullshit opinion.

Because just because you shake doesn't mean diabetes. I'm diagnosed ADHD and I get shakes from malnutrition. I'm 100% non-diabetic.

When I'm at work and haven't eaten I tend to shake a lot. I basically vibrate. I just had dinner and my just held my hand out in front of me and it's as still as I've ever seen it.

Almost like mental issues matter just as much as physical issues, but people like you love to discredit it because you don't think mental illness is a real thing.

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 0 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

Neurodivergent is cognitive and psychological.

If you shake from anxiety that's one thing.

But getting the shakes from skipping a meal or two is not normal. It means your body is not able to respond appropriately to your system needs. Nothing to do with neurodivergent. It's a medical situation.

Tests for diabetes are easy and cheap. Any general doctor can do it.

People can become diabetic from autoimmune disorders. It's not based on being healthy. Anyone can get it.

Untreated diabetes can result in some very serious situations including coma and death. But even less immediate problems from diabetes can long term damage to eyes, increased risk of infection, especially in the legs and feet resulting in gangrene, and a host of other problems.

When people know their health status they can manage their condition and reduce these risks. Ignoring serious health issues because "I'm neurodivergent" is unwise.

Adhd doesn't make you shake from skipping meals either.

It's caused from the wrong balance of insulin and sugar glucose in your system. And potentially early signs of ketoacidosis or hypoglycemia.

It's very serious.

Just check with a doctor. As I said it's a cheap and easy test. It's not normal to get the shakes from even going without food for days.

That's not how our bodies are supposed to work. Shakes are a very serious indicator something is wrong.

There are other causes that aren't diabetes but it's one of the most common and easy to test for.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

That's a shit ton of words that are bullshit.

I'm diagnosed depression, GAD, ADHD, and severe Anxiety. I don't have diabetes and have tested negative for my entire life. I have zero family history with diabetes, wasn't diabetic in the Army, or any of the recent blood work I've needed done less than two years ago.

Sometimes people are just different from you, and I genuinely think you're a piece of shit spreading misinformation as openly as you are for people who may not have the diagnostic information as I have and might panic thinking they're diabetic when they're just severely anxious or ADHD.

Your comment is remarkably harmful, and I say with all due respect, fuck you for spreading such fear into people who may not have the same information about themselves as I have. You're the same kind of asshole who goes onto a thread and says "It might be cancer" for someone who wonders about their abdominal pain.

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 0 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Neurodivergent has literally nothing to do with your pancreas.

Type 1 diabetes is not genetic. It's caused by a few things but basically the immune systrm has damaged the pancreas from an auto immune reaction at some point.

Type 2 diabetes is usually caused from being overweight or a combination of genetics and being overweight.

Educating people allows them to manage their health.

Ignoring health problems because "I'm different so it's normal for me" is unwise.
