All of his pardons so far have been political, that is to loyalists or those who were willing to pay him ~~a bribe~~ campaign contributions. If he were to make pardons of mercy, the public would suspect they were political merely based on the precedent he's already set.

However, I can't even imagine Trump willing to make mercy pardons at all. Trump really is that stuck in a transactional mindset, and cannot do a positive thing even as a publicity stunt. Every step he takes has to enrich him.

Will be a list full of overt distractions all to hide the 3-5 pardons he REALLY doesn't want you to focus on.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 17 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

And each pardon only cost $250,000.

[–] Dead_or_Alive@lemmy.world 6 points 13 hours ago

lol, no try 1 to 8 million.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 16 points 15 hours ago

"Letting Criminals Go Free" seems to track now that "Law and Order" is on the wane.

[–] auzy1@lemmy.world 11 points 16 hours ago

No doubt they'll be the people least deserving

[–] WatDabney@lemmy.dbzer0.com 163 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nothing says "250th anniversary of the nation's founding" quite like the Felon-in-Chief pardoning even more of his criminal cronies and sycophants.

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 26 points 23 hours ago

We do have the highest incarcerated population on the planet, it's pretty on theme.

[–] itisileclerk@lemmy.world 8 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

If the president weighs 250 pounds on the 250th anniversary, that would be awesome.

[–] moondoggie@lemmy.world 1 points 15 minutes ago

I don’t think he could lose that much weight that fast

[–] GMac@feddit.org 32 points 20 hours ago (4 children)

So.. 250 people charged in connection with epstein files?

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 3 points 8 hours ago

Or 250 preemptive pardons for himself and all his cabinet members.

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 17 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Possibly. Or it'll be 250 people that will pay the Drumpf family the most money for the pardon.
Or both.

[–] huppakee@lemmy.world 6 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Tbf auctioning off 250 pardons would bring in a lot of money for him

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 2 points 9 hours ago

Gotta keep the grifting going.

[–] TwodogsFighting@lemdro.id 10 points 19 hours ago

250 Pardons for himself.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

Maybe. More likely just more bribes.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 28 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

The article isn't loading for me, but if the headline is accurate, there is no way to logically cast this in a positive light because you're arbitrarily playing with people's lives to match a number that happens to be a round number in base 10.

I think we all know that there aren't going to be exactly 250 people who deserve pardons. So either they are pardoning too many people and letting criminals go free without completing their sentences, or there are more than 250 people who deserve pardons. Imagine being the 251st person. "Sorry, but Trump wanted exactly 250, so you don't get a pardon."

[–] GarboDog@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Your in jail for smoking weed, guy next to you in there for rape, murder, armed robbery and arms smuggling alright and 250th pardoned is this guyyyy as they help the other guy up to be let go

[–] reluctant_squidd@lemmy.ca 9 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I chuckled at your “deserved pardons” line. As if that has anything to do with who would be chosen. Going by the pardons this administration has been handing out so far, just pick the top 250 business moguls doing time for fraud. Boom. 250 easy.

[–] GarboDog@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Idk if that’s better or worse tbh

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 63 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lol you could do 250 of thousands of different things that would all be objectively better than pardoning 250 convicted criminals.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 36 points 22 hours ago

It'd be pretty easy to hand out 250 pardons to reasonable, reformed or innocent people.

Of course he won't. He'll pardon anyone who pays him.

[–] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 70 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You just know Ghislaine Maxwell is on that list. Someone has to get her body double out of Club Fed.

[–] TheGoldenV@lemmy.world 12 points 23 hours ago

Gonna suck for the double. I doubt the retirement is very long.

[–] SuperEars@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Somebody shoot him another email.

[–] RedWeasel@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

Preferably written on copper

Has anyone noticed that this Trump guy is kind of a cunt?

[–] CobraChicken3000@lemmy.ca 32 points 1 day ago

250k per pardon

[–] Red_October@lemmy.world 15 points 22 hours ago

If you saw this in something like the Hunger Games you wouldn't bat an eye.

Release Barabbas! Release Barabbas! Seriously, is it any more clear that any pretense of good governance has been abandoned and it is all just turning into bread and circuses? I’d like to observe that while roughly 9% of presidents have been assassinated, about 40% of Roman emperors were, so this whole “bread and circuses” might not work as well as they think.

[–] Bohne93@feddit.org 14 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Don't get your hopes up, for some reason all of trumps would-be-assassins are completly inept to the level that one might suggest these attempts were staged.

[–] Smaile@lemmy.ca 1 points 14 hours ago

100%, they're all like 16 year old idiots.

[–] Smaile@lemmy.ca 24 points 1 day ago

I wish hell was real.

[–] chahn.chris@piefed.social 20 points 1 day ago

I feel like this is what happens if the penguin becomes president.

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 15 points 23 hours ago

Why stop there? Try 250 war crimes while you're at it oh look, a convenient war.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 6 points 22 hours ago

More criminals on the roads.

With any other president, I van see the pardon as a sign of compassion. With him, it is a pay-for-pardon scheme for criminals that managed to align with the Conman in Command.
