AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

My university "gifted" us these stickers to celebrate Engineer's Day in Colombia. I was so baffled because our university had a Graphic Design faculty. They could have given them the chance to design something nice, but they didn't.

Why are they wearing helmets? We are not even at Civil Engineering, we are at System Engineering/Computer Science, they didn't even make the LLM generate something that makes sense.

This perfectly sums up the main issue with generative AI and AI in general.

It exploits laziness.

Sure, they could have gone to the Graphic Design faculty, but that would have meant actually having to work, setting up a competition, finding judges, figuring out proper compensation/creditation, it would mess with the students study plans, you would need the approval from the GD faculty and the affected classe's teachers.

All of the above is not lazy, and ChatGPT is lazy.

So instead of the GD faculty having a design printed and used, and the engineering students getting a meaningful sticker, the GD students lost an opportunity for a cool project, and the engineering students got a crappy sticker.

Sigh....

Nice example to set for students who they'd surely censure if they used AI in their student work.

Its also funny that one could be lazy in a creative way and get more interesting results. Like do a poorly drawn doodle oneself and go with it or just combine some roalty free images to create something simple and funny.

We have after work parties couple times a year and they've started to use AI in their invitations while simple silly edited photo from previous party could have been much more personal and funnier to use.

Once saw advertisement for university near me on LinkedIn and they had used generative AI to create a photo of a smiling student near some trees. Instantly made me question the whole school as sure they could have just taken a photo of some students or teachers in their cafeteria or something.

I choose to believe they couldnt find a single smiling student on campus

It screams middle management.

"So why do we give them a sticker in the first place?"

"I dunno, it's what we've always done. It doesn't matter what it looks like, no one cares, just make the whole process as cheap as possible."

"Then why give the sticker out in the first place?"

"Cause people would complain if we didn't give out a sticker!"

Universities will demand copius amounts of tuition money and then AI-generate bs like this.

Most of the universities in South America a public.
The ones that aren't public usually are company funded, not "students funded".

This is a private university though.

Inglés: What is actually true is that a lot of us use boots.
