July 19 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Sunday that laboratory experts re-checked lettuce sample results from Taylor Farms in an ‌investigation into an outbreak of the cyclospora parasite and concluded the finding should be considered a false positive. As of Sunday, there were no confirmed positive sample results for cyclospora, the FDA added.

The FDA on Saturday had said that a sample of shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms tested positive for the parasitic illness that has sickened thousands of people in the U.S.

A spokesperson for Taylor Fresh Foods told Reuters that the company was informed the FDA made a mistake.

FDA says the check from Taylor Farms cleared into Trump's account.

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 36 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

I'm calling bs. Taylor farms is known for this. They probably paid someone off. False positive... We know it's coming from a large farm/distribution. If not Taylor farms then who? The list of farms with that much reach across America is small.

I haven't verified it yet but someone else on Lemmy said the ceo met with the trump admin so...

Edit- https://futurism.com/health-medicine/taylor-farms-donation-trump-rules

I see nothing about a personal meeting. Just a huge donation a year and change ago.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 1 points 16 hours ago

Evidently they're friends

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago

Yeah maybe the "false positive" retest was really just a "false negative".

[–] Hairyfishnuts@feddit.online 88 points 1 day ago

Paid the ignore fee, I see.

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 70 points 1 day ago (4 children)

OK, neat. But, a lot of people still have cyclosporiasis and are suffering its effects. So, if you guys fucked up on the investigation, where is it actually coming from?

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

I've seen people who seem more informed than I say there are two more cases that we know about.

This is deregulation. Cook your food.

Its still coming from Taylor Farms, the FDA (even after being slashed to the bone by the Trump Administration) still found the source.

But Taylor Farms is owned by a big trump supporter, so exoneration is just another little donation away.

Any evidence or is this just blueanon tinfoil shit?

So you're telling me that I abstained from Taco Bell's Crunchwrap Supreme for nothing?

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That item is garbage now anyway. They ruined my boy.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (2 children)

I'm still a fan of the cheesy double beef burrito. Super basic, but it hits the spot every time.

Slightly unrelated, but if you have a chance to go to the Taco Bell Cantina on the Vegas Strip, absolutely do it. The quality is miles better than an average location (my brother and I said it must be like the corporate kitchen equivalent), they have alcohol, and you can walk around the Strip before/after.

Edit: also, always get your burritos grilled! I found out that was an option once when I ordered at a kiosk and it's changed my life.

[–] Bob_Robertson_IX@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (2 children)

Thanks for the tip... I have a couple of Taco Bell tips to pass along.

First, I don't know the science behind this, but if you mix Baja Blast with Pink Lemonaid, the pink and blue turn clear.

Second, a few weeks ago I picked up some powdered THC and sprinkled that into a chili cheese burrito... might just be one of the greatest things I've ever done.

[–] BlueOysterCultist@lemmy.zip 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

TIL powdered thc was a thing

How long does that high last?

For me it kicks in about 15 - 30 minutes after taking it, and lasts around 5 hours with the peak around the 2-3 hour mark. I like the powder because it's very easy to control the dosage to match my needs for the day.

[–] GalacticSushi@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 23 hours ago

A grilled cheesy double beef burrito is basically a steak grilled cheese burrito for like half the price. It's my go-to these days.

[–] GalacticSushi@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 23 hours ago

The last few times I've gotten it there have been like 3 crumbs of beef throughout the whole thing. Like, you could not possibly put that small an amount of meat on accidentally. I'd feel better about it if they actually just forgot the meat altogether. They are clearly putting the smallest amount of meat possible on those things, total ripoff.

[–] Tm12@lemmy.ca 4 points 23 hours ago

Taco Bell Canada still has lettuce. Didn’t release my blockage 😔🛑

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Call me anti lettuce but unless I'm eating a salad (which I'm not getting from a fast food place) I doubt I'd realize if all the fast food placed permeantly removed lettuce from the menu.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

That watered down tasteless crap contains basically no nutrients anyway.

[–] joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone 22 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Did they use Taco Bell diarrhea as a patsy for market manipulation of a salad company?

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 19 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

Taco Bell is the one who identified one of their lettuce suppliers as a source of infection. (There are likely other sources, as some of the infected do not eat at Taco Bell.) Taco Bell then announced the issue (but did not name the supplier), pulled all lettuce from that supplier from stores and warehouses, plus anything else they thought might be questionable. They seem to be being very responsible here. (Admittedly, there was a long initial delay, but they were probably expecting government agencies to still be functional and doing their jobs.)

In many scientific tests, you need to chose between false positives and false negatives. The way to run infection tests like this is to choose for false positives: if a sample is negative, you can be sure that it's negative and you can ignore it. If it tests positive, you can re-run the tests with other criteria and confirm or deny the original results.

It seems like the regime, tired of being blamed for not figuring this out, got a false positive and made the announcement before re-testing was complete. And now Taylor Farms (which has been involved in multiple other past infections) is saying that it wasn't them, almost certainly because they've lost business, and the FDA is being forced to back them up on that.

I'll also add that it's been, what? two months since this started? It's possible that Taylor Farms cracked down on their produce and farming practices, and that the samples provided to FDA are genuinely clean and we may never get a definitive answer; that's happened before in other outbreaks. It's extremely unusual for there to be no definitive answer in an outbreak that's lasted this long - but then again, we used to have a functioning government.

It seems far more likely that Taylor Farms just gave Trump another little donation so he would tell the FDA to say that it was a false positive.

Bury the evidence, claim innocence, pay off the government, manipulate media, boom. Taco Bell ends up taking the biggest hit for acting responsibly while those caught screwing up bury the body in the Reflecting Pool, which is probably the most annoying part.

Taylor Farms is a "subsidiary" of Taylor Fresh Foods. A private Delaware corporation with HQ in California. Backed by Venture Capital, and has processing facilities all over North America.

Paper news doesn't seem to have it, but video news (CNN or MSNBC or something) at one point had a reporter verbal blurb that Taylor released a statement stating "a processing facility in Mexico was traced to be the source," with a vague mention that their "parent company" said that (Taylor Fresh Foods) - this was a few days ago.

It was an interesting press release, because it feigned blame to Mexico, and that the mysterious parent company" was taking care of the problem and the brand "Taylor Farms" is obviously just a victim. Companies often use cable news for these opinion-shift events, fairly commonplace and one more reason to never watch cable news seriously. This one was an extra level of vague misdirection. (Not tinfoil hat statement, just observation, they could have sounded quite genuine and it still would have had the same effect.)

So Taylor Farms is Taylor Fresh Foods, the parent company is...them, and guess what? Mexico is one of the countries they have processing facilities in! (Don't have time to re-grab sources but it's all public info about the company.) Anecdotal occam's razor, a facility in Mexico tainted a lettuce shredder, didn't catch it, some lettuce got out as what happens, and instead of doing the usual needful cleanup, they are trying to cover it up.

It's interesting and disturbing getting to experience this level of cover-up in real-time. Especially given that these things happen, and it's just the cost of doing business when you screw up. Instead, all this narrative-shifting instead.

Like even the wiki pre- and post-edit is trying their darndest to taint the story.

Ah, yeah I mean in food cases like this it's pretty serious and should be taken as such, people get really sick, I guess I just wouldn't put it past them to do something like that because it's kind of what they do. I am very concerned about our food supply, food inspectors, food growers, water supply and all of that I just make jokes because I am unhappy in this consumerist hellhole we made

[–] Mikekm@lemmy.world 6 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

I've been eating Taco Bell weekly since I was a teenager, and I'm 45 now. I can't think of a single time I've gotten sick from it. If all you eat is crap without any balance to your diet, it's not the Taco Bell that's the problem.

I remember the times McDonald's and Hardee's made me sick, but those times were 30ish years ago.

[–] joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

I haven't really eaten taco bell since I was a teenager so I couldn't say it's just easy to dunk on them I guess, I prepare most of my own food at home now because fast food is not even cheap and convenient crap anymore it's just crap, it is what it is though. FWIW I don't think I ever got sick from them either

[–] dreamkeeper@literature.cafe 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Taco Bell gives me the runs every time so I don't eat it anymore. I'm otherwise a healthy eater.

[–] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Do you happen to have a dairy sensitivity without realizing the culprit? Do you load it up in fire sauce?

[–] dreamkeeper@literature.cafe 1 points 16 hours ago

I do have a dairy sensitivity and I'm sure it's related, although I take lactase pills which usually help. I did the "hot" sauce when I still ate it
