So here is what it looks like. It's encased but quite light. I am returning it - obviously - so I can't open it to see what's actually inside.
Nice. There's probably nothing in there but an adapter board and a ROM chip running just enough of the firmware to report the drive as 16TB.
Where did you buy this at? Name & shame the seller?
So out of curiosity, I did what you suggested but I'm unclear about the outcome. Looks like the drive is shit as it already crashed on me.

I'm really curious what's inside the case. OP does it feel as heavy as a 16TB HDD? I'm curious if there's just a tiny little SD card soldered inside this thing.

Why though? On the hope it’s an actual WD? But what purpose would that serve as most likely something has been messed with to make it cheaper. Or maybe from the same WD manufacturing line?
Curiosity, mostly. And yes, it could be a "factory second" labeled for local sale.
A SMART report would be interesting too. Perhaps it's a relabeled old drive.
may be a fake, may be a refurb that was relabeled and they don't speak the language so they didn't know the difference and sold it as new claiming that it is a China Only version.
There used to be a fair business in that, as huge enterprises would cycle out drives on a predictable period rather than running them to failure.
My NAS is an ancient Atom box originally from some touchscreen POS with a refurbised 12TB HGST drive. It needed a special power cable because big storage backplanes defined one pin of the SATA power cable differently than normal desktop PSUs.
It feels like thry went to more effort to make a non-convincing fake label than to scan the label from a real WD drive though.

I got a WD Red from Amazon (Marketplace) that looked exactly like a legit one, though kinda scratched up. I was only able to tell because I tried running a SMART test and it didn't even fail, it just didn't work. I got suspicious, so I tried to register the product on Western Digital website and it lacked the necessary code on the label. I then contacted WD and confirmed it was fake, thankfully I could return it and get money back.

there are programs to check if the capacity is real. these are usually made to identify faked usb flash drives but it can probably be used here too

I think the term soft drive would be more applicable here.
Probably more reliable than the real drive, every drive I've ever had a problem with has been WD.
