Haven't watched the video yet,so maybe this idea isn't new, but the topic is intriguing.

The singularity will arrive the moment that it takes an entire human lifetime to learn enough background knowledge to advance.

Right now, as time goes on, it takes more and more schooling to get up to speed, for lack of better term. Like, you're not going to be making easy new discoveries, because first you need to spend 18-20 years in school learning what everyone else discovered before you, so you can build on it.

What if it takes 70 years to get up to speed on human knowledge?

Sure, there are some possibility for abstraction, analogous to a physicist knowing zero biology and just relying on biologists to figure out the details of the black box the physicist uses, but eventually that will run out too.

History is full of famous or important people who predicted "something" that turned out to be bullshit or very different.

And then, surprisingly, there is this:

I don't think we've even seen the tip of the iceberg. I think the potential of what the Internet is going to do to society, both good and bad, is unimaginable. I think we're actually on the cusp of something exhilarating and terrifying. [...] I'm talking about the actual context and the state of content is going to be so different to anything that we can really envisage at the moment where the interplay between the user and the provider will be so in simpatico that it is going to crush our ideas of what mediums are all about.

Just because your comment made me go watch it again YouTube link (Recommend watching with newpipe)

Also

It's just a tool though, isn't it? ... But you're arguing about something more profound

Yes, turns out one can be too much right about something.

"Every exponential curve becomes an S-curve."

That's good. Gonna be reusing that one.

Doesn't really prove the point though, an intelligent form of machine can duplicate itself on every single planet of any single galaxy and eat most of the ressources of those planets until it can't go further

Yeah, if we were in the singularity, we'd know it - there would be absolutely no question because of the way it's defined: "... singularity in the history of the race beyond which human affairs, as we know them, could not continue"

So as long as people are still working at a company to make money to buy food, etc. then it's not the singularity.

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Maybe Sam Altman is in a singularity and the rest of is have escaped it.

Certainly had been feeling like reality is falling apart a bit lately though..

I don’t think the “Singularity” is bullshit, we’ll get there if we make AI in a completely different way such that it’s capable of actually reasoning… Just these LLMs are garbage

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 5 points 2 days ago

Definitely but when dangerous people not only believe in it and actively push for it, it will still do harm. We're seeing it unfold currently.

[–] BarrelAgedBoredom@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

The rationalists (of which most of the AI bros are) version of the singularity is just reskinned christianiry

In the wake of their losses and the fact that chatbots will only be good useful and cost effective for specific uses with local models and specific datasets; The ghouls failsons of the corrupt tech class need to tell us some Elon musk style mediocre sci fi bedtime stories with a little Zizian lore sprinckled on top; all to keep their bubble rolling a little longer and also ensuring the further erosion of America's economy and infrastructure. I yearn for these idiots to get what they deserve.

The sigularity is just us destroying ourselves. On a road to nowhere, on tracks coming to an end, that's where you will find the future, which is a cliff.

Questions like who does it serve? and why? or just because you can doesn't mean you should are not really brought up.... with people just chasing a exponential function. The singularity is similar to somebody beating their head on the wall until it bleeds and their brain is exposed and they die. It's that lowest common denominator dumb dumb shit, you know..., people's egos, their own personal desires, and a total disregard for how the natural world actually works. Since capitalism is so unnatural and unholy. That's my interpretation of their stupid ideas. So I do believe in the singularity, just not like they do.

Like, the future is hilarious because we're all gonna be running from satellites crashing down from low orbit. Indidualism hahaha

It's kind of funny. They found cocaine in the White House and clearly people like Elon Musk Taking ketamine Or people in Trump's cabinet which clearly look like they're on cocaine. It's just one more revealing reality that the people in charge are chasing some kind of high. Maybe one day we'll see them running around on TV butt-ass naked because they're drug addicts. I mean if you look at Hitler and the people around him, they were all on drugs. During World War II the kamikaze pilots were on drugs. I'm not shitin' on drugs. You know, a little bit of weed here and there in moderation, whatever. But the people in charge are drug addicts. I'm also not shitin' on drug addicts. I'm just saying I don't want you to be my fucking president though. It's a motherfuckin' Jerry Springer shit show. A shitty baby diaper of a nation.

Who would of ever thought the end would be so funny.
