This is a sidewalk grip where it ramps up from the street. I noticed that all of them have the same melt pattern. Low traffic area when no one was out.

Just curious if anyone knows why

While we're waiting for reactions or comments regarding the future of the community, here is a nice prompt I just stumbled upon on the r/journaling.

If I had this power, I would wake up as… me.

A much younger me, though. Aged 11 or so, when I started making real life-changing decisions. I would wake as this young-me but with all I know and all I have experienced during the almost 50 years that have passed since that time.

I’m not talking about knowing in advance what to study and what job to get (and which ones to avoid) nor where to invest some money (even though that would not be a bad idea :p). Just the intimate knowledge of all I did wrong, and why I did it. What I did well, and how I could do it better. Simply put, I would try to help younger-me become a better person.

Making wrongs rights would be top-priority. Helping me hurt less people around me. Hurt myself a little less, too. I would also encourage myself to care a lot more about a few of those people. And to tell them much more loudly they’re important.

I would not advise myself against those few real bad persons I have met along the way. Most of them, even if unknowingly, helped me learn valuable lessons. Maybe except one, that did real long lasting harm. Maybe.

Lastly, I would tell myself to not waste as much time as I did. Life is short and I wasted so much of it. Not as much because I was being lazy (I was, at times) but because I always wanted to experiment as much as I could in life, I wanted to have lived something before deciding if that something was worth it. I would instead encourage young-me to focus much more on a selected few meaningful experiences, ignoring all the others.

Maybe I would fail at changing myself, stubborn as I was? No idea ;)

What about you? Who would you be? And why?

The Patent Eligibility Restoration Act, S. 2140, (PERA), sponsored by Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Chris Coons (D-DE) would be a huge gift to patent trolls, a few tech firms that aggressively license patents, and patent lawyers. For everyone else, it will be a huge loss. That’s why we’re opposing it, and asking our supporters to speak out as well. Patent trolling is still a huge, multi-billion dollar problem that’s especially painful for small businesses and everyday internet users.

[...] While the widespread AI-driven “apocalypse” predicted by some experts was not actualized, there was still a significant amount of misinformation. The Biden robocall was the most notable deepfake example in this election cycle. But as Tim Harper, senior policy analyst and project lead for the Center for Democracy and Technology, explained, there were several instances of AI’s misuse. These included fake websites generated by foreign governments and deepfakes spreading misinformation about candidates.

In addition to that kind of misinformation, Harper emphasized a major concern was how AI tools could be used to target folks at more of a micro level than has previously been seen, which he said did occur during this election cycle. Examples include AI-generated texts to Wisconsin students that were deemed intimidating, and incidents of non-English misinformation campaigns targeting Spanish speaking voters, intended to create confusion. AI’s role in this election, Harper said, has impacted public trust and the perception of truth.

A positive trend seen this year, according to Jennifer Huddleston [senior fellow in technology policy at the Cato Institute], was that the existing information ecosystem helped combat AI-powered misinformation. For example, with the Biden robocall, there was a quick response, allowing voters to be more informed and discerning about what to believe.

Huddleston said she believes it is too soon to predict precisely how this technology will evolve and how AI’s public perception and adoption may look. But she said using education as a policy tool can help improve understanding of AI risks and reduce misinformation.

Internet literacy is still developing, Harper said; he expects to see a similarly slow increase in AI literacy and adoption: “I think public education around these sorts of threats is really important.”

Late yesterday, the US Department of Justice filed its proposed final judgment, officially recommending a broad range of remedies to end Google's search monopoly.

Predictably, Google is not happy with the DOJ's plan, which requires the company to sell its Chrome browser. It also retains the option of forcing Google to divest Android if competition doesn't increase from behavioral remedies, including bans on exclusive default deals with other browsers and device makers. Additionally, Google is prohibited from building any new browsers and must fund an education campaign that shows people how to switch search engines and potentially even pays people to switch. Google may also be restricted from using its data scale advantage to benefit its AI products.
